It's thanks to Really Wild Animals that I got into Echidnas. I love them. Same as their egg-laying mammal relatives, Platypuses.

The plural of platypus is platypodes. Platypodes and echidnas are part of a surviving group of mammals called monotremes.

Quite often, when I'm fishing around the rivers, they come walking past, and if you go to close, they just seem to sink into the ground. They can dig themselves down very quickly. Very cute.

Are they still making them? I thought these were all snippets from the boxed set of DVDs titled, “Planet Earth As You’ve Never Seen It Before”, copyrighted in 2007 by BBC. PS If you’ve never seen that video series, find a copy and watch it. It is one of the most breathtaking set of videos that has ever been recorded! Absolutely stunning videography, and the storytelling is fantastic. It’s an absolute masterpiece that should be in everyone’s collection!
