I use them for collecting mushrooms, and when i was a child in my village they were used to recollect grape clusters from the vines to make wine with them.

very nice not sure if you know but if you google mushroom knives that have a similar knife wiht the addition of a small bristle brush on the tailcap to clean off the mushrooms :)
@katana24
@katana24 4 жыл бұрын
@@cutlerylover Yes I have those as well, but just for collecting, i don't brush the mushrooms on the go, i clean them just before cook them, so i don't need the brush. And the blade on them are quite shorter, so is more versatile something like you have shown.

I thought about you a lot yesterday. We have never met, but my sadness for your loss surprised me. I am mostly a lurker on your channel, but I eagerly await each new video of yours. One can tell everything one needs to know about a person in the way they treat animals and pets. You have a great big heart and a love for the four footed friends. That makes you a friend to me in my book.

Thank You, Had one of these for years. Never knew what it was for, but now I get it! Hold it the other way and it is perfectly comfortable. I love the curve for opening packages and the like, if anything, it is too good and may overpenetrate with the curve pulling the knife into the cut. I totally get it as a pruning knife, it is so comfortable flipped over in its proper position.

I have that Case knife with the yellow plastic handle and I use it in the garden just about daily primarily for pruning tomato and other vegetable plants. One drawback is it’s difficult to sharpen because of the blade shape. I use a conical diamond hone but it’s not easy to get a reasonably sharp edge. I bought it at the Case/Zippo factory store in Bradford, PA. If ever in Western PA the shop and museum are worth a half day visit. They have hundreds of knife models there including some beautiful special editions.

Gotta be honest I have one of these as my EDC with a small keyring Swiss army knife on my keys for small detailed work. In the UK where you can't carry a locking blade the shape makes it so it won't snap closed on you at any point during its use as the pressure is always pointing downwards

Hi Jeff, i first learned about pruning knives when i briefly did forestry a few years back, honestly great knives, also, very good for using with gloves for cutting tasks like zip ties and rope because they cut amazing and you are less likely to stab yourself while wearing heavy gloves some knives you might be interested in looking up that i dont know the English names of would be "Okulere kniv" "pode kniv" and "Ridse kniv today i use two pruning knives, both Opinel knives, one is a No´8 with a slight curve and a No´10 with a very aggressive curve, they work great, both have blunt tips as the tip really isnt important for pruning work, sadly the No´10 one doesn't lock in a closed position, but it doesn't amtter that much, great "work horse" knives!

Hawkbills are great for certain gardening, landscaping and agricultural purposes (Spyderco’s serrated versions are the best out there, but farm supply stores typically carry cheap fixed blade hawbills). So it’s odd that the book says they are only used by eccentrics. I’m guessing the author thinks they have been replaced by snips and shears, but in some cases a hawkbill knife is way faster and more comfortable (both essential when you do this for a living). Also, you can comfortably use this knife for pull cuts away from the body. The only thing that is uncomfortable is holding the knife vertically. Holding it horizontally is going to be comfortable, whether you are cutting towards or away from the body.

What do you think about current case quality, Jeff? I ask because I hear people complaining about alignment and play issues I also suffered a terrible delivery from case, a mini stockman, one knife as so badly aligned the second knife couldbt even seat inside the handle and the third knife had stupid amounts of play. I swore off the brand but I know about where they came from and the quality they had. I want to give them one more chance but I'm torn, thoughts ?

A shape used often for grafting. At one time grafting was much more widely practiced in home yard fruit tree cultivation, and also chip bud grafting. Though hawkbill is more for pruning. Very specific curved cuts and cut depths were achieved. Harder with a straight blade. Victorinox still makes some mid-priced grafting and gardening knives. Some indeed adapted to electrical work directly in the early days of thick insulation and tarry electrician's tape. These are for controlled depth cuts on slender branches and thus snips would not really do. A sharp blade is much cleaner. Shears can crush and damage. But heavy duty tree pruning etc. is not for these blades. Controlled depts and curved shape on smaller branches is the intention. Great old knives. Working men used to get 20-30 or more years of regular use from these old blades. Never once prying a can or sharpening the blade on a power grinder in a lifetime of ownership--or stabbing anyone. Real knife tool men! ז"ל Gus "If men were like dogs, there'd be lots of messes, but also lots of love, and no wars."

That knife just begs to be used The book you use has a very crappy explanation of a pruning knife, it didn't say anything about why there is a bulge on the bottom of the handle(it's there for getting grip when you pull the knife down with force) it says the knife model is kinda outdated and it didn't even mention the German brand Tina this very old company only makes traditional wood handle pruning knives My pruning knife is one of the tools I use the most, I use my knife for cleaning up pruning wounds on trees (the shape of the knife blade and handle enables me to get extremely close to the grow ring where I sawed off a branch), cutting off very small branches (it takes less space in the pocket compared to pruning shears), getting mushrooms and disease off the trees (you can cut deep into a tree by using the tip of the blade), harvesting some fruits and cutting off vegetable heads(like harvesting a head of lettuce) The pruning knife is a must have tool for anyone that has or works in a garden that has trees
