Cutting a 200 ct Morganite

Here is a faceting journey to kick off your week. During this process video, I walk through the cutting of a very large and beautiful gemstone. This peachy morganite started out as a vintage carving and over the course of the video, I chop off the carved face, cut out inclusions, preform it, make a custom design, and use all my skills to cut and polish the perfect gem out of it.

I sort of understand. Can't do it at this point of course, but it has my attention. One telling point I have learned . People ask me if this machine i made is "accurate". It's not the machine that has to be accurate, it's the operator. :-)

@@JustinKPrim Started on the round rose cut like in the book. Decided before cutting the top triangles, I thought a star cut on top might be cool. Meets are 97%. Stuff happens. :-)

That’s awesome. I went to a beryl mine where they have star rose quartz and aquamarine. It seems like I got some morganite as well. Some of the crystals I got are more orange than pink. What’s the best ways to tell the difference in rough broken crystals?

Guessing that's a personal record? Quite a challenge! I like to see what the market is doing, so I check the sold listings after browsing the current machines up for bids, and somebody bought a Sterling ST-08 with vernier handpiece brand new for $800. No idea if it was a scam or not but that price is absurdly low.

@@JustinKPrim True if used, although this one was listed as new. Took a look just now, seller has zero positive feedback and no previous sales. That explains why it had only one bid. Oh well, it's just another case of buyer beware.

The best thing about ART ,is there is no wrong, I have always thought “one man’sPicasso , is another man’s Van Gough. “ I agree the carving is beautiful, I have not seen anything like it before now. The cut stone is also impressive. It is truly hard to compare one against the other. - this is my view . Ultimately it is what the client wants and is happy with that matters as we are just the artists as lapidaries( gem cutters).

@@christinechew660 Morganite is becoming quite rare and i think it is a beautiful blush pink. Morganite is from the Beryl family, like emerald, aquamarine and topaz, and they are known for their inclusions. I think it is a very beautiful stone, not weird at all. :) But, its everyone's own taste i guess.

What would you have done if it hadn't started out looking symmetrical when cutting the pavilion mains? Mark it somehow and remove it from the dop and re-dop? That's my worry going full super glue, the lack of adjustment.

It didn’t look symmetrical when I cut the mains. Partially due to the difference from the diagram to the real shape and partially due to the table, the index that should be on the tip at 96 index is actually on 3 which made putting in the rest of the facets really complicated and bespoke 😅

Just wondering is there a instruction sheet for this cut of a pear shape stone, I was asked to cut a pear amethyst for a lady who lost the original stone from a 3 stone pendant. Any help you can give is appreciated, I use a mast style machine at my lapidary club.

Sorry. I just made it up as I went. You can find a mixed cut pear design in my book The Secret Teachings of Gemcutting. It’s similar to this but the shape is a bit different and different angles. The book has the design in angles for quartz that that would be good for you. Find it on magusgems.com

i cut gems using a 200 dollar lapidary machine i got from china, i've never cut anything as large as this morganite, im jealous. largest stones i cut was a 40ct piece of synthetic zultanite. can you share any simple lapidary diagrams? my favorite so far has been french diamond, and rustic bar.

Are machines from China as capable as the high end machines. I'd like to start with a low budget machine and go from there.

@@ismaelo73 defintiely not in a similar quality class at all. The Chinese made machines are almost all terrible.

How much money do you make as a cutter? Is it worth it? I don't know how you pay for travel so much. Please talk about this for those thinking about it. like this job, material cost vs final cost.

If I was only doing cutting at this point I couldn’t survive. But also I’m not trying to make 100% income as a cutter. I also make income from teaching, selling books, selling online classes, selling stones, and more. Lots of little things make a good lifestyle.
