This was really interesting & helpful. I have a bit of a different perspective (phobia?) on what feels safest: As a person who has managed to temporarily detach two different fingertips with sharp objects, I find the traditional sharpening method scary. Protective gloves would seem to resolve this, but lizard brain learns what it learns. Further, I worry about damaging my knives. So the automatic roller thing feels like a way that I could do something I've never been comfortable doing, which feels like a net positive, even with the expense. It all about the feels. Vulcan chefs wouldn't have these issues.

I'm so happy the tumbler works well. I think I have put it in the shopping cart half a dozen times before pulling the trigger.

when I bought my late grandmothers house I also inherited her vintaged CUTCO knifes. This thing really bought those knifes back to life as im pretty sure the last time they were sharpened was before I was even born.

This was a very interesting video, this will be a good possible gift to keep in mind. Thank you for the honest review!

It is quite a clever system. It is very precise and keeps a constant angle better than the most expensive systems like TSProf. Although those systems have many more advantages obviously. For a person with zero experience i feel it would be the best way to sharpen knives. Obviously they missed an opportunity to add two more angles since the base has 4 sides. 18 and 25 for example. And they will probably overcharge you for the abrasives down the line. Also they should have included two pages for better support of longer knives. It's just a piece of plastic with a magnet. But for what it is I think it's pretty decent. Maybe pick up a strop with some polishing compound and you'll be able to whittle hair

I’m a stones guy. I have some very expensive, very high end Japanese stones I used for straight razors. They are now my kitchen knife stones and I use a fixed angle guide. It takes longer but it’s my zen time.

If I hadn't started learning to sharpen with a whetstone system similar to yours based on your last video I'd totally buy that.

Was definitely expecting knives to come flying at your face when you took the magnet out

interesting video, had seen a different company's version of this tool, even more expensive, think they are version 2 of it. And wondered if it would be effective. Am in the process of gutting and redoing my 'tiny' kitchen. And am going to be choosing knives and tools once I have space to put them in. This and the knife choice and sharpening video have been v helpful. cheers😊

all I have is a honing stick. I feel like my knives stay super sharp with just honing regularly. I have nothing to compare with but I hate spending money on gadgets. Some day if I absolutely need to actually sharpen the knives, I guess I will have to buy one of these things.

Me too. I have a stone, but I rarely use it. When I was in the restaurant business, my knives got dull all the time, but now I don't cook enough to need more than the rod.
@Faustustopheles9 ай бұрын
@@GermanSausagesAreTheWurst maybe that's the trick. i love to cook and am actually about to chop some onions right now for a pizza but maybe I just don't do it often enough to really dull them. I have two decent 8" chef's and love them. I do take good care of them but just don't feel the need to use a stone as they are really really sharp just from regular honing.

Bought one. I like it a lot. Smaller knives are difficult but my longer knives love it. Lol

I've been looking at these.

I see other manufactures of the same concept for a bit cheaper, and some with additional honing discs. One thing this has above more conventional systems is the honing. I have a honing rod and it is always tricky keeping the right angle. No one seems to sell replacement diamond discs separately.

that was a lot of fun! I always really distrust this kind of gimmick sharpener. I don't know if that's fair. I've had a lot of trouble getting decent at sharpening, and it seems to me that if you're already good at sharpening, then that roller will probably work for you. if you're not, I'd expect it to be pretty inconsistent-but then you wouldn't get good results from stones, either. your point about having to hold the tip, for example, is really important. if someone is using this as a substitute for learning how to sharpen, I think they'd miss that. I also really wonder about the difference between the section near the tip, and the main part of the blade: is that being sharpened as well as the other?

For the Tumbler, it looks like the knife blade would have to be at least as wide as that block for it to work. I have paring knives that I'm not sure would work with that.
@SeasonLiberally9 ай бұрын
I had to basically hold up my thinner knives past the magnet width to sharpen them. It wasn’t easy. For small knives I’m not a fan.
@WideLoad4059 ай бұрын
Welp, I think I'm gonna have to get the tumbler style setup.
@keithdavies67719 ай бұрын
Maybe. I have the stones for my chisels, and I run my knives through, too. I think a knife takes about 3/4 of beer, in time. As far as the blade up, I have some hockey puck shaped stones that I sharpen axes with, those are blade up and less controlled, and the hands are really close to the edge. I wouldn't worry about that, with the distance and the magnet. But I do think that looks like 8 inch is your max length. And I don't think it would work well on my curved boning knives. I think I can make one, before I buy it. I have a broken water stone I can round off, and ... yeah, I can make one. I keep stones in a covered container with a little bleach and water. I' don't dry them, so no wait time. And I use a spray bottle to add water as I need. It's faster, but I don't know why I do it, because I'm just having a beer, and hanging out. I could probably replace the scales on that broken knife, but the person that made the knife Tom got you certainly could, and I don't think it would cost that much.

I think I saw them on Amazon for $200 or more. And I think I have that in my water stones.
