Cutting Felt with the Silhouette Cameo 3

Watch as I experiment cutting felt with the Silhouette Cameo 3 and deep cut blade. You can use Heat 'n Bond or freezer paper on the back of the felt, depending on how detailed you want the cut to be.

She recommends using a Silhouette Cameo Deep Cut blade with the following settings in the Silhouette Studio: Cut=20, Speed=3, Force=33, Plain Card Stock. She uses National Non-Woven felt brand 80% wool / 20% rayon blend and Heat 'n Bond Lite adhesive backing if you want to sew through it.

Hi! Working through getting 2mm craft felt tuned in. Just picked up Wonder under from a previous video recommendation of yours. Would you recommend returning and buying the heatnbond lite? Is it that damaging to the mat?

Sorry it took me so long to respond. Wonder Under will leave residue on your mat and Heat n Bond won't.

Do you know if this will work on slightly thicker felt, like the 79 cent ones at Hobby Lobby/Michaels?

Anything thicker is going to be hard to get through. You might be able to with the deep cut blade and changing the settings. I'm not sure what those settings would be though.

What if your just want to cut a large piece of felt in different places (top and middle)? I also don't want to do an iron on.

You can only cut as large as the cutting mat, but I'm not sure what you mean by cutting in different places. You can make cuts anywhere that you program into your machine. With the Cameo 3, you need something for stabilization. I think the newest Cameo and Cricut have rotary blades that make it possible to cut without a backing. I'd like to try one of those soon.

Fabric of any kind needs to be "stable"...that is why the freezer paper didn't work as well, although had she placed it upside down, it probably would have been successful. You could actually "starch" the felt...but it will still need a fusible or freezer paper, just turn it upside down.

Hmmm... that's an interesting idea. I worry about the felt not sticking to the mat very well, but maybe I could use an old mat and put a stronger adhesive on it.

I noticed that you didn't set your material to felt but left it on cardstock. Could this be where I'm going wrong when trying to cut my felt?

That shouldn't matter as long as the custom settings are programmed in. Most likely it's the type of felt or thickness of the piece you have. It's definitely finicky.
