Hydraulic Cylinder Rebuilds | This CAT 140M Grader NEEDS Repair | Part 2

These cylinders are in desperate need of a rebuild & new seals! In this Part 2 video of repairing the CAT 140M Grader, we remove the steer cylinders and blade lift cylinders off the machine for disassembly and installing new hydraulic seals. We show the step-by-step process to disassemble and tear down the cylinders before installing new seal kits and re-assembling in our hydraulic press. We also show replacing the steer pin bushes using a pull bolt before fitting the cylinders back onto the Grader. To complete the repairs, we re-attach the blade lift cylinders and centre shift cylinder to the A-frame and shim out the ball joints.

Here we go! Our music issues are now sorted... but I guess everything happens for a reason because I didn't realise that I used some wrong footage in the 1st video🤦‍♀ Kurtis made a mistake (you read that right!) with the steer cylinder pistons and had to refit them (he put them on backwards at first whoops). With me it's because I worked for many years in the engineering department of a cylinder mfg. company. Everything Kurtis does makes sense to me and is familiar. And he does it well. Most people don't have any idea what a buffer seal or a canned wiper is and what they do. I also welded large weldments too for 10+ years so when he strikes an arc that also makes sense to me. This channel is my all time favorite because just about everything Kurtis does is meaningful to me. I'm retired now but because of Kurtis I can still get out in the shop vicariously.

This grader obviously has thousands of hours on it, enough to wear through the blade, yet it looks like new. As a fleet mechanic myself, it's refreshing to see a company that takes great care of it's income producing equipment, rather than keep using it until it won't be useable, then complain about downtime, repair costs or employee abuse! You make it happen, Kurtis! Thanks for sharing!

Sorry you had to take the other one down, Kurtis. This crap with copyright strikes is getting ridiculous, especially since you didn't include as part of the video. It was in the background. Agreed. The Copyright crap is getting way, way, WAY out of hand where a person gets hit for the most mundane things. It's even worse with KZfaq giving the trolls power to screw over content creators by launching CS wars on vids. Heck, I swear there was one incident where a person had a vid hit with a strike due to 10 seconds of white noise.

I like the simple ingenuity I see. Using the press as a vise, using zip ties as band clamps, making your own custom guide, etc. We who aren’t mechanics (of any form) love watching your channel for the “big accomplishments” that you have as your every day life. There’s not a “formula” or “one set of tools”, but at the core a determination to get the job done.

@@bdkj3e I have had at least a thousand times that a “ fair quality “ lathe and a junk pile of scrap would have been lifesaving. When I was a helicopter mechanic the boss and I would clone very expensive tools that were absolutely essential for our future use. A gadget that insures accuracy, safety, time saving, etc. is always a great tool. In Kurtis experience, he has either found or devised what seems in use to be dead simple aids that only come from need or genius. Can’t quite figure out which when dealing with Aussie mind set. But this guy has definitely got his (and her) act together!

I think I saw someone taking apart a locomotive once with the wrench and extension Kurtis is using at 9:45 The size was funny to me, then I realized he is actually working on machines of that scale. It is a different world than I live in.

My ex-boss told me to go fetch a 1,4 ton Ford Mondeo to scrap with a crane that could lift only 1,1t. I was 100km off from HQ when the crane tore off from the truck subframe. Sometimes you don't need enemies, when you have your boss.

If the owner had looked after his machine he would not have ground 3mm off the caps over those ball ends forcing Kurtis to shim them back up to spec.

No kidding. I complained to my boss for 6 months about bad seals on a lift cylinder for a John Deere boom. The piston rod ended up binding and snapping, which ended in a much more expensive and pita repair.

Most times, cleaning it off/up before repair work is greatly appreciated, besides, paying CCE to clean it before they can even get & make contact with the pieces saves them money and CCE drudge work.

Kurtis doesn’t like getting filthy parts to work on. No good professional wants to bill for donkey work, as in getting a piece of equipment cleaned up so you can A- see what you are looking at ( really hard if encrusted in grease, oil, mud, etc) B- doing precision work requires clean work environment, and owners who are smart will insist that the “ crew” will maintain the very expensive equipment to the best of their abilities. Hyd. oil is expected. Grunge is expensive for all involved!

Kurtis, I like that shop made guide sleeve! I wish i had the machinery and talent to make some of those for use here on the farm. I'm constantly re-sealing hydraulic cylinders and that sleeve make re-installation look like a piece of cake!

Great channel! Love watching your videos, your not too wordy, but you explain the things that need explaining very well and leave the obvious things alone. I'm certain your customers have tremendous faith in your repairs and by videoing these repairs your customers must have the warm and fuzzy feeling after watching exactly how you do thorough inspections, make the appropriate repairs the proper way and offer up the right solutions. It's refreshing to watch an honest man do honest work while placing the customers best interests above numbers on an invoice. You sir are a man of ethics and honor. Yeah, what a bunch of BS that you can't rebuilt the steer cylinders on the newer models without sending them back to the factory for calibration. They just do it because they can. John Deere is the same way. It's not that people can't learn how to work on newer machine with more computer controls. It's that the manufacturers won't build the machines and the maintenance tools in a way that allows third parties (like like repair shops, or even the owners themselves) to service the them.

I notice you trimming the ends of the cable ties. You should do it like our electricians do, 50 mm long and cut at 45 deg angle just perfect for inflicting injury.

It is one of the details that most zip tie users never consider. I learned a trick from a master communications electrician to use a butane lighter and flash the flame across the cut edge of the trimmed tie which instantly rendered it unable to cut the next hand, wrist or forearm that drags across it. I doubt anyone has ever thanked me for eliminating a nasty cut but I felt better knowing that they did not get injured because of me.

Hi from Illinois USA. I must say that my Friday morning was sadly incomplete, but my Saturday has been made happy! These videos must at times feel like a second job/career for both of you, and want you to know how much I appreciate all the effort that goes into making them so superb. Highlight of my week to see the level of craftsmanship AND video expertise being presented for our enjoyment. I cannot imagine what these would look like without the whole picture that Karen presents. Also impressive that while she is doing camera work, will be that extra pair of hands, even when it means wiping hydraulic fluid off her face!

I always enjoy watching a master at work. Great job. As a former mechanic in my younger days, it's very easy to get things crossed up sometimes no matter what you are working on. Trying to work and focus on the job and trying to make videos would be difficult and time consuming so I appreciate your and Karens' work. I was surprised at how clean this company keeps it's equipment considering how they are used.

41:45 Proper use of the strap going though the ratchet. love it! Been trying to teach people this for years. they want to run the strap back through a second time. run the strap through the ratchet once and that's it, then start tightening.

I am impressed by your diligence in cleaning the cylinders you rebuild.No worries about scratching a cylinder or seals. I have rebuilt many hydraulic cylinders and, I got very irritated when I see people slap things together. I have witnessed the total destruction of a 200 ton blanking cylinder destroyed by someone who thought it was alright to not use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts on a two piece piston.It was ugly.All the cylinder bolts broke and,beat the hell out of the head.😢😢😢

Used to build all sorts of hydraulic cylinders at a past job. Mostly the cylinders you would see on a car carrier truck. Brings back memories.

Thank you so much for reposting this. I was really bummed out on Friday. I could not get to the site you posted so this was a pleasant surprise. Also worth the wait. Steve Also, Kurtis likely knows this but if you cut the tyraps (wire ties) from side to side instead of across the flat you won’t leave that razor edge on them. You can knock down the small sharp spot, if there is one, with your cutters. Steve

That is the most manly pipe wrench I've ever seen! What a beast! I watched you do two cylinders of the same type twice. I think to myself that the second one would be boring as I just watched you do one. Yet, even though the second one is abbreviated, and the other two even more so, I am still just as fascinated. It must be a combo of watching someone very good at their job as well as the artful way the rest is filmed and edited that makes the whole process interesting start to finish. Great work as always!

I can relate to the outtakes section when you cut together the bits of dropping, bumping, falling, loosing things. It's like watching myself work but with Kurtis having 1000 x more skill level. Makes me wonder how painful it would be to watch me work 😂. Sometimes it feels like i'm putting stuff together with only thumbs... 😅😢 Keep up the brilliant work.

Looks like the outdoor workshop is working out well, Plenty of overhead clearance to use the forklift. It would seem one problem with just machining the trunion ball caps is the radius of curvature on the cup is still the same on a worn trunion ball not matching it to distribute the pressure. Always educational and impressive..

Taking on a mechanics roll in this one. Instead of welder/fabricator. I like it. Usually see this stuff done in the field, when things fail, and the owner can't bring it to the shop. This looks to be a bit of preventative, fix it before it fails, type of thing. Good on the owner. Many would just run it to failure.

Brilliant little series Curtis Karen and Homeless. I’m a retired large truck mechanic here in the Uk but I’m still addicted to watching skilled people like yourselves repairing all sorts of machinery. I still have my own small workshop but don’t work on the big stuff anymore but can’t seem to stop getting my hands dirty on anything from lawnmowers to cars. I loved the outtakes especially when you kept dropping everything I reckon anyone working on cars trucks or machinery have days like that especially when you’re by yourself and you’ve struggled to get something lined up then you drop the securing bolt !!! Don’t you just love it when that happens 😂 Keep up the great work and your KZfaq content is unmissable 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Good to see somebody who knows what they're doing putting in oil seals with a hammer! I figured I was doing it wrong, so it's a relief! Need to get you a proper set of wrenches, so you can stop using that Thumb Detector! :P
