This video is a job we did to repair a damaged tilt bucket for a 30 Tonne Caterpillar 330 Excavator. This bucket got caught on the excavator track and the moldboard and cutting edge have been badly bent. First we carbon air arc gouge the cutting edge and bent moldboard off the bucket using our Lincoln Electric DC-400 welder. We then fit, align and tack on the new moldboard before lots of welding. After the welding is done we fit and bolt the cutting edge on to the new moldboard to complete the repair.
In this video we are using:
- Lincoln Electric DC-400 Welder
- Geiger Pneumatic Needle Scaler
- WIA Weldmatic 500i Welder

Oh to have young knees again! Beautiful job! It amazes me how far MIG welding has advanced. We would have never used MIG but stick welded it instead. Of course the machines have advanced leaps and bounds too. Sure beats an iron wheeled Hobart torpedo motor generator cranking 400v DC at 48 volts. I like your breathing machine too. That smoke is full of bad nasties! Cheers! Terry from South Carolina USA

I never had the luxury of getting to work in a shop when working on buckets. I was either on the barge or sitting in a mud puddle. We ran a 15 yard hard digging bucket and a 27 yard clean up bucket on the dredge. It was always fun building a tent around the bucket to get out of the weather. No wire feed either. Running stringers for days on end repairing cracks or welding adapters on. Now I'm all crippled up I just get to watch you do it. Great channel and great work.

Carbon arc gouging is a blast! When I worked as a railcar mechanic, there wasn't a bolt too big or too tight it couldn't loosen. Eventually I got one for my home hobby shop. Just be careful not to stick your leg with it while 'white hot'. It doesn't hurt too bad, and rarely bleeds. Love the video.

Greetings! Just wanted to offer a little advice here when running into “arc blow” problems on metal that is magnetized. First off, I’m not going to lie and pretend like I have tons of experience with arc blow due to magnetized steel. I’m just a welder that’s kind of a nerd and likes to read up on all things welding. Next time you run into this, try running 2 ground clamps; One as close as possible to each end of the weld joint. This, in theory, will disrupt the magnetic field that is present and will allow the weld to deposit normally or closer to normal anyway. It’s worth a shot. Hope this helps. Keep up the good work. Love the content.

I was stationed at a USAF base that supported Cape Canaveral in the ‘70s. There was on huge aircraft hanger that was entirely huge machine equipment; lathes, mills, brakes, and many things I couldn’t guess at. When I started watching your channel it took me back to watching those magnificent fabricators, machinists, and engineers who could make very nearly ANYTHING! Thanks for sharing your talent and letting me Re-live that sense of wonder.

Hey Kurtis 👍and his boss (Wife😊) I am watching this for the 3 rd time😏. I think the format and Quality of work, is why your videos are easy to watch. Much respect for the hard work your wife does producing CEE CHANNEL. People don't realize the time and cost of making these videos. We also get to learn welding from a master. I have done some welding, but I would be nowhere in your league. I see why you are busy. Quality machinists are hard to find. I pray for more success, and safety for your family and friends. You deserve it. God bless you guys👍😊

Really liking all the vids so far, especially the hydraulic pistons, rods and barrels. As someone who repair quite a few buckets yearly this one had me wondering why? on several methods used. Stuff that differ from the usual way i do it. Removing old base edge, i take the oxy / acy x11 no4 nozzle and cut that one of..prob 30 min work for a bucket as clean / simple as that one. I try to straighten the bucket floor if possible (crazy how most grading buckets turn up at the shop with the bottom hammered up in the middle). I always try to get a good weld angle and never weld from bellow. Why not getting the base edge holes counter sunk to save those nuts from wearing out when you got decent thicknes on the part? Not saying my way is the way to go, i hope i don't come across as a know it all keyboard warrior asshole. Well thats enough rambling from my part, and i hope i didn't mess up the English completly, since i am a Swedish Swede. /Emil.
