I love my 15 Nissan Altima 2.5s, got it brand new, got 170+k miles, running beautifully, transmission and engine both strong. Changed CVT fluid change every 50k, engine oil every 5k, spark plugs 80k. Never taken it to any mechanic or dealership. All maintenance done by me (im not a mechanic) just followed KZfaq

As a Nissan technician and owner, Nissan's are pretty solid vehicles. Even the cars that come in the shop and are beat on, are still running strong. From my experience most owners do not bother changing the cvt fluid regularly and then complain that they have tranny problems. I always recommend Nissan's to friends and family of mine. A lot of them have them with no issues. I personally don't understand the hype of some other brands that people love, but to each thier own. Great video as always!

Hey Kirk, appreciate the comment I bought a 2023 Sentra SR midnight this week. Really liked the car but have a scared feeling from all these people online about the CVT in it. When would you recommend changing fluids on the transmission roughly? I plan to take great care of the car so it can hopefully last 10+ years. Its been unclear on when you should flush and refill tranny fluids on the car, any advice is appreciated thanks Kirk.

@Kole Semeniuk Congrats on the new car. I always recommend changing the fluid every 30k. I have never seen a cvt go bad in the current generation Sentra and we also see a lot of rental cars coming in at work with no problems unless caused by the people renting them. My family has new and old Nissan's with no cvt issues. Most people see Nissan and automatically condem the cvts, not knowing anything about them.

Hi Kirk, some mechanics have said that the CVT transmission can get wonky IF you change the CVT fluid. Is this true?? I've never had to change the trans fluid with my other non-cvt cars??? I have a 2009 Altima with 60,000 miles and I haven't changed the CVT fluid ever, car is still running smoothly. What do you suggest? Should I change CVT fluid?? I do regular oil changes and tire and brake maintenance. What do you think???

I have a 2014 Altima SV 4cyl with CVT we bought in August of 2013. We drive it a lot; city and highway. It has 160K miles but we service it regularly; we take care of it. Still driving on the original transmission. It has been a great car overall. Great fuel economy. Big back seat. We love it. Had to replace headlight lenses. Had a suspension component break in the rear. Nissan put out service bulletins and paid for each of these repairs after-the-fact. Maybe we were lucky on CVT. We bought another 2014 Altima S used four years later. It still has original CVT, also. We like our Nissan Altimas.

I got a 2015 Altima from Carmax back in 2018. Tbh I wouldn’t have gotten it if I knew what I know now back then about their CVTs. Today it has over 168K miles and still runs fine. I don’t launch it like a muscle car, always changed the oil in a timely manner, and flushed out the CVT twice since I got it and hasn’t left me stranded yet. I just plan on keeping till I have to get rid it since I’ve saved money on not having car payments for over a year now.

I got a 2018 Nissan Altima SL. The greatest car I have ever driven. I travel a lot and moved a lot. It is now 2024, and I am at 98k miles. I service my car every time the dealership or my local mechanic advice me. I have changed out my tires to some pretty expensive all weather tires but kept my original alloy rims but that was due to drive in all types of weather. In the desert where it gets 120 degrees and in states where it gets to -20 degrees. I have never had any major mechanical issues with the car. The 2 negative thing I can say about the car is that on days where I have to rush to work and the car doesn't get warmed up properly in the cold, you can press on the acceleration and the car doesn't want to push itself. As for the second, in extreme heat, something happens to the connectivity to the bose speaker on the middle of the dash that causes it a static noise. Other than that, it has taken me across the United States twice over and there were weeks where I would drive 5 hours to go back home for a weekend just to leave and drive 5 hours back to work 2 days later.

2016 Altima SL here. 5 years and just hit 100k. No major issues. Great car. Take care of your cars and get it serviced regularly. Are some models more prone to issues? Of course. But how you drive and how you maintain is everything. A friend had a 2016 SR as well. He was on his THIRD transmission 😂 he also beat the hell out of that car. Treated it like a muscle car instead of a 4 cylinder daily comfort drive.

This was a great video Christopher. I've been driving Nissans since 1986, except for a 3 year period with a 1995 Suzuki Swift. The only problem I ever had was with my 2006 Altima that had the crank case sensor go out on me on while on the highway. It still ran and drove Ok to get to the dealer to have it repaired after work. The key is to change the fluids regularly, for the wear and tear components that rely on them.

After my old Honda Civic finally died, I got a 2016 Sentra SV about six months back. It's been great- its comfortable, affordable, has decent tech and gets great fuel economy. Right now it has 82,000 miles and the CVT is pretty good. It has occasional hiccups but for the most part it's pretty smooth and somewhat peppy when you cut it in sport mode. Say what you will about Nissan reliability, I have the car now so I might as well just take care of it and hopefully I'll still be driving it when it hits 10 years old. My only regret is I got a blue one when I wanted white.

2019 Altima 2.5 SL here, 37k miles. No issues. Car was always a So Cal car and servied at Nissan. Just did a brake job for around $650 which I felt was reasonable for all 4. Car is simple and reasonable to maintain. I did a CVT flush at 30k miles for peace of mind. I don't LOVE the feeling of the CVT but the motor and drivetrain feel bullet proof in terms of reliability. People need to keep in mind that Nissan was very smart in designing their drivetrain for low RPM functionality. It has torque down low compared to the other Japanese brands. Peak torque is 3500 RPM, the car rarely even sees 3000 RPM in daily driving. On highway I'm doing 80mph at 2000 RPM.

I do the CVT fluid service myself every 25-30K with Nissan NS3 fluid. I try to keep my accelerator pedal below the 50% point so the transmission wont go into the "D step shifting" as I prefer the smooth acceleration curve. Ohh...at about 200k miles the check engine light came on...I diagnosed it as a dirty catalytic. Threw some Cataclean in the tank and the problem resolved itself....easiest fix ever.

I just bought my mother's 2007 Nissan Altima, 126,000 miles and she maintained it by the book at the dealer. Original transmission, no issues. Replaced the battery twice and just put on new shocks and struts. Oddest thing though, the oil pan rusted through and had an oil leak, am in Minnesota with lots of salt on the road. Only wear items replaced, tires, etc. It's her second one, the first was a 2000 that saved her life in an accident. Sister had a 2005 and another sister a 1994. I'll keep this a few more years and then buy another, maybe a 2017 or 18 I really like how they look. Best car out there, oh and I happen to think the 2007 - 9 is the best looking Altima they made.

The short answer is maintenance and don't beat the crap out of em! I've owned 5 Nissan CVT's already (2012 Rogue, '14 Versa, '18 Versa, 17 Path, '13 Sentra). No issues and the cars were pushing 100k (miles not km). I do the fluid changes myself using a scan tool and genuine Nissan NS-2 or NS-3 depending on the CVT about every 25-30k plus CVT filters (there's two of them). My '13 Sentra SR currently has 122k on original CVT...so far so good. No rust on any of the cars... my only complaint was that the '12 Rogue seemed to have oil consumption around 75k about 1 quart between oil changes (3000 mile oil changes). I want to see how far my '13 goes before the CVT goes out....when it does I'll put another tranny in it. My parents love their Toyota's buy boy they are $$$ and you still have to take care of their CVT's too.

Mother in law bought a used 2010 maxima in 2014. The CVT transmission just gave out a couple weeks ago at 420,000 kms with no service done to the tranny ever. Regular oil changes, breaks and tires. I noticed that the wheel alignment seemed to go out often and prematurely wear the tires. As a side note I have a 2015 Ram 1500 with 577,000 kms and wheel alignment has never been out even though I take it through rough off road places.

I have a 2011 2.5 SL Altima, with almost 150k km, changed the cvt fluid at about 90k at the dealer, as I felt it was slipping a little bit, have had no issues with the cvt since then. Have owned the car since 2015. Bought it with about 53k on the odometer. Besides regular maintenance, its been a great vehicle, although it does eat the brakes more than I'd like. My father-in-law has a 2017 Nissan Sentra, today he passed 190 thousand km and I never know all the mechanical part, I only change the cover, services, lights, those things, Nissan engines are the same or more durable than those of Honda or Toyota, I saw several comments from people criticizing the Nissan cvt box, but according to consumer reports about 3k users reported problems with the cvt maybe they don't know how to use it, I don't know, but I do know that millions across the planet bought Nissan CVT vehicles and 0 problems

I have a black 2016 Altima SV that has had TWO CVT replacements, one at 26k and again at 67k (which means this 2nd CVT only had 47k miles). YOU have just been lucky. You can't blame every cvt failure on negligent owners that's ridiculous. Ppl can be negligent, but Transmissions should never be failing at 20K miles. Where there's smoke, there's fire. I have every maintenance document that i had done by the dealership on time some ahead of schedule. everything from tire rotation, oil change to CVT fluid other major maintenance. Buying a Nissan from 2008 to 2020 you're rolling the dice.

@@carsunlocked the 1st CVT was covered under warranty. I had to fight the dealership to cover the 2nd CVT because it was past warranty. Luckily one of the conditions (and the selling point for me knowing the reputation of Nissan CVT's) was the dealership agreeing to lifetime powertrain warranty. They tried every way not to honor it, but ultimately did when they realized I had them do all maintenance. Im too familiar with this whole Nissan CVT issue, several of my immediate and extended family are/were employed at the Smyrna, TN plant in positions from line techs up to VP of Manufacturing during Carlos Ghosn cost cutting offering buyouts to employees to move to a primarily temp agency work force. Nissan and the supplier that builds the CVTs have since diagnosed and improved the reliability for the most part. But starting from 2004 Muranos ~ 2019/20 all models, it was a known issue by Nissan in early 2009. The way one exec explained to me, during those years you had a 50/50 shot of getting a faulty transmission and you would know by around 55k miles if not sooner. If you made it past that point, chances are you've got one that will run forever.

My wife's car is a 2015 Altima and she loves the ride, comfort etc. I'll admit it's a smooth highway cruiser. I've heard both sides of the CVT transmission. My experience so far has been good but I'll admit I took the Car Wizards advice. Drain and fill (son't flush) more often because the "lifetime" is the warranty and they want it to fail just after the warranty. His advice every 30,000 to 40,000 miles drain and fill etc. Over the span of 200,000 miles it's still less than a new tranny and yes he has seen serviced ones last that long. Me I miss my old school simple mechanical 87 Nissan 4x4.

Bought my car also new off the showroom. Rust is never an issue today with modern cars today. So no rust on the body after 10 years means absolutely nothing. You talk about doing regular maintenance but you never mention how often you replaced the transmission fluid if ever?. I replaced mine after 30000 miles on my 2016 Altima SR and paid 300.00 for the service and my CVT still went at 60,000 miles under warranty. My rear shock suspension was replaced at only 40000 with all city driving. I plan to see if it qualifies for reimbursement under one of their possible service alerts on rear suspension bars which is a TSA on file with Nissan dealerships nationwide. My car is only at 64000 miles and overall I've been actually pleased with the car. No ongoing electrical problems like I had with my 2004 Mazda 6 and the rubber and trim inside and out on the Altima is holding up nicely. My advice to all is to check on all class action lawsuit claims including the ones already settled as you may still be able to get service or reimbursement in some cases. To protect your CVT the best advice I've received from master techs is to drive this car like your grand mother. Don't do quick accelerations especially when the engine is cold. Just do a drain and fill when you change your transmission. Transmission flushes can be also part of the problem with the CVTs. I appreciate your video but more detail on your car maintenance like coolant changes etc... is necessary to get a lot more worth worth out of it.

Then the heater began to give me problems. Never had an issue with the motor nor transmission 😅👍. Drove like a top. Had actually one crash with it not my fault insurance fixed everything and i still kept it aft that. Then with over 100k decided to sell it to my brother for 500 bucks because i was buying a 2012 Corolla to which i am still driving right now. It currently has 180k miles and keeps on going. I have had quite a few little leaks here and there with me always fixing it right away. Another oil leak right now and i am looking at an 2022 altima 2.5 S model and above with under 40k only because they are cheaper in price than another Toyota. The day of a 15 thousand dollar used Toyota from a dealer is Gone. PS i have been purchasing mostly all my cars from Hertz, Enterprise or Avis rental car sales. I like their no haggle prices

I have had mine since 2013 and I have always hated the CVT especially in cold weather and going up and down even the smallest of inclines. When cold , it does not upshift until it warms up. I could be doing 50mph and the RPMs are 3000 plus. On inclines it constantly changes the RPMs up. It kills the gas mileage and it's a lot of wear and tear on engine and trans not to mention how annoying it is.

Not so many people have been as fortunate with their cvt transmissions and to have massive recalls and numerous settled class action lemon law suits is more than enough evidence to avoid. I 'm going on 280k and after 100k started doing it big rig flush style every 20k (I would have started earlier but I didn't think i would own it after 100k). I dropped the cvt pan at 200k to replace all the filters and was pleased to see next to no metal shavings. ( A sign of immanent failure). Outside of the CVT it is one of the best cars on the road IMO, especially for road trips, and I say this as a mechanic and past Nissan salesman. However, if I had known about the CVT I would have bought a Camry and continue recommend them over the Altimas. The blower motor is behind and above the glovebox and is very easy to remove and replace (when that time comes) just make sure not to remove or disturb any of the odd little metal clips they are weights to balance it. Couple Phillips screws and a flashlight. There are videos on youtube. They say 20 min but more like 60 if you havent done it befoere as you really need to be under it to make sure you align the screws in the right holes. Again super easy DIY task. The seats only get worse fat ass or no fat ass. I am 300lbs my wife 100. My seat is shot, her's is on her way, maybe in a year. We use a $15 pleather cover that matches the leather. They tend to wear out fast but with the $30 wooden beads on top (i never thought I would ever try them but they are great) and modified by using an old charging cord to secure them to the seat they are great for the money and the heat still comes through. Both off amazon.

This is all fine if you buy a NEW Nissan. But I would love to buy a Rogue, but the new ones have a turbo, something I do not want. Buying used you do not know how it was driven, because CVT's do not hold up if you constantly accelerate hard from a stop and not service them. I would love to buy one because I love the looks and interior but just scared the CVT would take a dump and I would be stuck with an expensive repair bill I cannot afford.

I got a 2015 Altima 2.5L bought it new. At about 25000 miles it started to have a problem when I'm at a stoplight complete stop and then need to go press on the gas pedal and nothing happens car doesn't move for about 3-4 seconds then it will accelerate. I would have to turn engine off and on again and it will fix the problem until it would happen the next time. The second problem was the car would shutter at about 30 mph but not all the time. I did a little research and found out my cvt had a recall to reprogram the TMC the cvt computer. Took it to the dealer and they reprogrammed the cvt and WOW it fixed the stalling and shutter problem. The recall is because low cvt fluid pressure which causes the cvt belt to slip and get hot. My car honestly now feel like it drives better than when I got it new. Hope this will help if anyone else has same problem as me. P.s. My car has 70000 miles on it and all I did so far is oil changes and a set of brake pads.

naw You not the only lucky one. I brought my 2013 in 2013 nissan altima s. I now have 262000 miles on it. only thing changed sine purchase is AC compressor at 30000 miles, gear shifter at 80000 miles and new transmission replaced at 97000 miles. other than that regular oil change brake pads and rotors and thats it. Oh driverside lower contol arm @ 179000 due to getting reregistered in new state inspectionin 2019 and the most recent 4/24 cv axle driver side. I will change the rear shocks next month but other than that imma keep it till the wheels fall off and pirchase new wheels and keep it going.......Just called Nissan customer corp to ask for the headlight replacement from law suit. it went all the way up to investigation department. schedule to talk to them tomorrow for decision. Since they have all the records of service since 2013 and the complaints the first rep says its a good chance that they will honor the recall for the headlights since I never received the postcard for the lawsuit to get them replaced in 2022 deadline. I'll let you know when I get answer tomorrow.

We have the 2013 model with 107,000 miles ….no issues so far. We had a 2002 Altima with 267,000 miles. We replaced the engine at 230,000 miles but had the original transmission until we totaled it in an accident. My take if you maintain it will last 😊

I REACON THAT ONE NEEDS TO ANAYLYSE IN WHICH AREA OF STATES THE MAXIMUM DAMAGE HAS OCCURED WITH THESE CVT TRANSMISSIONS . CAUSE IN WARMER AREAS TRANSMISSION IS PRONE TO HEATING UP QUICKLY DUE TO FRICTION WHICH IN TURN CAN DEGRADE THE INTERNALS
