------------
Last year, on September 21, 2016, in USA, world's most important websites were not accessible. That day, money transactions could not be done on PayPal. Movies could not be watched on Netflix, and even online games could not be played. And unfortunately nobody could tweet about this, because Twitter was unreachable. In an instant, the biggest 85 websites of world had disappeared. Because there was a massive and organized DDOS attack targeting their DNS servers. A scene from Mr Robot's first episode, which was 1.5 years before that real incident happened.
In real life, the attack was resembling to the one in the show, but this time, the target was not a big company, it was DNS servers. The system which addressed the names of the websites was locked. As an analogy to a house, when you type something in the URL bar, you are knocking the door of the house, in a sense. The door was built to endure normal conditions, for normal Internet traffic. If you attack a such system abnormally, organized, or in other words, if you knock the door with tens of millions of people in a couple of minutes, what happens? There won't be any door or house anymore. What happened last year was something like this. Don't think like, "Well, I don't care. I haven't heard of it, and it didn't affect me.". Because you could have been a part of this attack without even noticing a thing. Because that day, an army of botnets bombarded there with 1.2 terabits of data per second. A lot of devices are needed for such attack. Millions of them. Botnets means computers transformed to a zombie. But of course, not only computers, any device that can connect to internet has the potential to become a zombie. We are living in the era of Internet of Things, after all. Computers, printers, modem, mobile phone, game console and many other devices you use can connect to internet, therefore they can be a botnet while you are completely unaware. For example, what is the password of your computer, or device? Could it be 123456? If so, unfortunately, it was already used in a such attack.
So, what should we do? In the era we live in, it is not sufficient to be only literate. We like it or not, we are a part of a digital culture. We are born and we grow in it. Therefore we must educate ourselves to be digital literates. We need to educate ourselves for this, and cyber security has to be an important, essential part of this education.
Now, let's start to take lessons from Mr Robot to be a more careful internet user. Yes from a TV show character. But not an ordinary TV show. One of the most realistic productions of this area, cyber security. According to the producer, creator of this show, Sam Esmail, one of the most important reasons why this character is so realistic is, his consultant writer. Known as Kor Adana, Korhan Gürocak. I don't know if it's his influence, but in the very first episode we see the characters eating baklava in Güllüoğlu in New York. In the same episode he was getting someone's password. Besides, quite easily.
The first thing you will do to not go through such thing, is changing the passwords like 123456. Believe it or not, 17 out of 100 people's password is this. Find stronger, longer, more unique passwords. 123456seven is not enough either. And do not forget. Your password is your secret. Never share it with someone else.
