Today we are going to make a custom Windows 11 ISO using a program called NTLite. This guide will work on both Windows 10 and 11. With NTLite you can decide what parts of Windows you want to keep or remove and you can also add 3rd party software to the ISO. You can also make many changes to the look of Windows as well. This is a long video because NTLite has a lot of options.

Just wanted to mention something important: When it comes to disabling Windows Defender, you'll want to keep the window open, just minimized. Or else it will turn itself back on and it may happen before you're ready for it. But keeping the window open and minimized somehow keeps it disabled until you either close the window, or re-enable it.

When removing components a good starting point is the templates (not shown in the video). Essentially the “privacy” template unchecks ALL of the components marked green. From there you can untick more (or less) but it’ll save you a lot of trouble going through all the menus.

Followed this. Used a copy of LTSC 2021 and some activation stuff. Threw in the apps I normally install and ran into a few issues with the order of the setcomplete cmd. Figured out it was deleting the scripts folder before 1) it installed the apps or 2) it would activate. Moved all the deleting lines of the cmd to the bottom and boom ... Activated lite windows 10. Thanks for the great tutorial.

Not to feel old, but I wonder how many kids watching this video don't understand the fast forwarding noise edit at 11:30. Sort of like how the original meaning of "roll down the window" has been lost, or that the save icon is a floppy disk. I bet a bunch of kids have never fast forwarded a cassette or VHS tape this day in age. Fantastic video. Extremely informative and immensely useful.

Good ol' days... 20-25 years ago, I made similar things with Windows 98, then 2k and XP. In reality, only the 98lite worked as expected (I have used it to remove Internet Explorer integration from the shell, so it was much stable and faster - and it was still possible to install it separately as a browser). None of the others worked well as the mentioned glitches continuously appeared, so I gave this up after the 98 times - but anyway, it's nice to see that someone else is continuing this road... Just one recommendation for 3rd party installations: if possible, always use MSI packages (FF and VLC also has it), so you don't need to research for the silent install option - it's always the same for all MSI packages. Otherwise, I don't recommend any other customization - there are still chances that some apps or games will not kick off (for example: if secure boot is not enabled, FIFA 23 will not start on Windows 11).

For XP, I used to create the Golden Master and use Linux to copy the partitions to flat files. To install, I booted Linux off the network and recreated the target system's disk. Everything happened automatically including joining the domain. I retired before upgraded to Windows 7, I think that would have worked the same. Later Windows, I don't know. The Golden Master always had the full software set installed, there was no third party software and Office etc was managed by Group Policy.

Great video. Thank you for taking time to make these. It is greatly appreciated. Per your request, I do like the Windows Wallpapers, so I would keep that. However, when I install Windows, I generally don't have my computer connected to the Internet when installing, and I usually install something called WinAero Tweaker with the setting adjusted to "Disable Auto Update of Store Apps" and I find it keeps a LOT of that garbage off my system. Only after I got a local account pretty much the way I want it, and to block store apps update, then I connect the Ethernet cord and watch Windows update first tell me my computer is up to date, then actually come up with a scrolling list of updates. I will also likely remove all the bloat except for CDM for that lockscreen wallpapers and I will finally be able to banish Edge. I will be trying it on my "Break Me" machine first if it allows me to bypass the EUFI (or whatever) TPM, CPU, nonsense requirements. I have an ISO for that, but obviously I'll be blowing that one away in favor of this particular customized incarnation. My favorite browser by far is Mozilla Firefox, and then my go to when Mozilla blocks too much that it breaks things, "Brave", Opera, and Vivaldi. But for the most part, Firefox trumps everything and that's what I use if I can get to do what I need to get done. WinAero has a silent install so I might play with that and see if I can make it do that. I ALWAYS use the program. If I had my way it would come with Windows. I could have SWORN you told it not to install Edge, but maybe just wishful thinking on my part. Luckily, I have what I call a "Break Me" computer which is not my every day use computer. I use it to practice setting up what I want to do. As better as it is, there is still sometimes the need to blow away the computer and start from scratch again. Back in XP days I was doing it twice a year. Back in Windows 7 and 8.1, every other month, 10, once a year and 11... Maybe once every 3 years or so, give or take a year. $96.00 does seem a bit unreasonable. If the price was around $20.00 or $30.00 it would be worth it to pay and help the person out. I've always had the philosophy to keep prices low. For example, if I see something for $5.00. Keep the price there. If you raise it to $10.00 and no body can nor wants to pay it, then you'll end up with ZERO. $5.00 is more than nothing... This plays out in my head differently and I am not able to get it out the way I want it, so I hope the point came across. You're really awesome. The information you provide here is invaluable. It helps SO many people, and we need more people like you in the world, that takes the time to teach others. The information is valuable to those that know how and like to manipulate their computers. It's unfortunate we have to jump through so many seemingly impossible hoops to make OUR computers do what WE want them to do and that's another reason this information is so valuable.

Thanks for the kind words. Winaero Tweaker essentially just installs registry patches. You could do all the mods that program does manually when you create the ISO so that they will just apply automatically without having to have the program. In each mod from the program it has a link to a page showing you how to do the same thing manually. Use those instructions to apply to your ISO and you're done. I have used chrome for years. At this point it's just habit. I stopped using Firefox years ago when it was an absolute memory hog. I think it's gotten better now but I haven't used it for so long I just use Chrome now. However, I have been considering switching to brave.

@@CyberCPU The best thing I do with WinAero is it makes everything convenient. It also grabs all the wall papers fro the desktop and lock screens so I don't have to find the files and change the names and extensions. It's free and there are no ads, or nags. I've been using it for a very long time. I have countless wall papers. Not sure how many duplicates I have, but even without duplicates, countless.

Excellent tutorial. Clearly and simply explained, as usual. I was considering doing this months ago...probably when your previous video came out. But after trying Windows 11, I realized that it is a dog of Vista and Win8 level proportion...and I'm tired of "fixing" Windows at this point. Ripping out the telemetry, only to have Microsoft break my efforts with new updates has been exhausting, and they will do it to this as well. Learning Linux is my new goal. It will be work, but I think my efforts will be more rewarding. I will have to learn this ISO building method to include my programs with it instead...maybe you could do a tutorial on that, too? That would be truly awesome, although I'm sure it won't get enough views to make it worth your while...yet!

I know that you are aware of this but why not revisit this video and show how to download the win10 ISO without having to download the media tool?? which unless you are logged in as admin to the machine doesn't work. this way you can just get the ISO itself.

27:58 - I wonder if you can install the portableApps versions of the applications? These are portable versions (well,duh) but to install them you simply unzip them. No installation required. You may just need to add a shortcut after the event, but that should be easy.

That's awesome utility. Thank you very much for this knowledge! I made my own custom image of 11 23H2 and significantly reduced emount of manual stuff required for a clean installation. The "Post-Setup" isn't the best approach in my opinion, as far it doesn't display a progress. So I put custom files and scripts embedded into the image to run on manual demand. The script runs installation of such apps like Chrome or VLC via winget (as far as it's available in Win 11 out of the box) - so it can bring always the latest available version.

Greetings. I like your comment and am particularly interested in " So I put custom files and scripts embedded into the image to run on manual demand." Would you be able to share those files/scripts, or at least share what you did? Thanks.

SMBv1, I know you said some people would disagree you turned that on, I strongly disagree with turning it on, big security issue. Legacy scanner that needs it still? Buy a new scanner, it'll be cheaper in the long run

I've always wanted to be able to create an iso image, full custom, of windows 10 with all my 2D/3D applications already installed. Every time I build a PC, it takes me hours to install all my software. I can very well create a backup point, but it will only be valid for the PC on which I'm creating the backup.

You title is incorrect , and you should have put install iso any virtual program. I noticed a few changes on virtual software. However, I followed your instructions and reinstalled ISO on my PC, and certain settings remained same.Only a few increased in size. On the other hand, Chris Titus Tech created a trim iso without the Win Store, which is what I wanted.

Thank you for the video, Rich. Seems to me that, until W11 gets its sea legs, there will be a lot of recovery being done with ISOs. It'd be a good idea to have a customized ISO on hand and €40 ($1.07 x 40 or $42.80) ain't to bad. But hiw big of a USB drive for the ISO? 32GB? Thanks!

A question purely for clarification: Can you load your de-bloated ISO back into NTLite and re-enable components, or do you have to start again from scratch?
@CyberCPU
@CyberCPU Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately no, you can't add things back after you've removed them. You would have to start over from scratch. However, you can save a template of your build and apply that with whatever modifications you want to make to it. This will save you some time without having to completely start over from scratch.
