@@ComicArtistProSecrets One thing I can attest to first hand about Ethan is that he can take HONEST criticism like the best of them & doesn't shy away from it if it is factually legitimate. On the flipside, if the accusation is false or he feels he is being misrepresented he will absolutely, in no uncertain terms, inform anyone making such claims of the fact that there is bullshittery at play & lay out exactly what the truth is or how the situation appears to have been misrepresented according to his own personal perspective. He also doesn't deflect the truth & will straight up own a mistake or oversight if it is pointed out to him. So for anyone who might see this review or read these comments in the future, I can tell you with a clear conscience that my own personal experience with Ethan Van Sciver informs me that IF he had done what Just Some Guy had himself seen multiple sources passing around on twitter & had, in fact, withheld refunds from multiple individuals who had requested one during the extensively long & wide open timeframe when such an option was available to them as was suggested in this video before the above conversation took place, I believe wholeheartedly that he would have manned up & admitted it regardless of any possibility of potential backlash. That's just the kind of guy he is. What I DID notice, though, were several instances once orders were locked in & refunds were no longer available through the official IndieGoGo website, & as proofs were starting to arrive & the fulfillment process was beginning to get underway, where several long time Cybefrog backers & Ex/Anti ComicsGaters suddenly decided that they'd waited long enough for their books & began to beseige EVS wiith a neverending public tirade of demands for refunds. In fact I believe a small number of them may have even been successful at first in getting theirs because Ethan had made a point of letting us all know that a few more chromium issues were going to be available than he'd anticipated after fulfillment was complete DUE SPECIFICALLY TO A SUDDEN RUN OF LAST MINUTE REFUNDS, after which he understandably must have chosen to cut people off as word spread and more & more Support Trolls started jumping on the bandwagon. In fact, after witnessing their Post Campaign Close / Pre-Fulfillment Refund Tactic being used to such great success upon Ethan & a few others, Jon Malin wisely opted to announce in advance & ultimately place a "NO REFUNDS" disclaimer on his latest campaign near its end in an attempt to minimize this behavior. Now he is regularly roasted for doing THAT & is still labelled as someone who dodges legitimate refund requests, so clearly no one is ever going to be able to win with these snakes. They give their support only with the intent to weaponize it later in hopes of disrupting the business & success of each campaign they attack & further damaging the reputation of ComicsGate & any creative talent who would dare attempt to sell their books using the #ComicsGate hashtag &/or Ethan's assistance. It's total bullshit. Take any criticism you hear with a grain of salt. There's always a chance that a rumor may be accurate, but whenever pertinent, ask for proof. Rarely will there be anything of merit available to be shown. It's typically based solely on heresay & someone else's insistance of its accuracy. Nothing more. Always Proceed with Caution, in Comics & in Life. 😏 Do YOUR OWN Due Diligence, Use YOUR OWN Judgement & Never Base Your Choices on SOMEONE ELSE'S UNVERIFIED TESTIMONY. Not Even MINE.

@@allamericanslacker2378 Which tells us more about the person, willing to excel at their craft by taking criticism and expanding off it. Those that ignore their critics end up having none by the end, ignore your consumer base and you have no consumers that will sustain your business. Many in the comics industry are more interested in getting paid then creating something, they want to send a message... that nobody cares about, then expect to get back pats for it. The whole point of the critics job is to try to find the flaws so a creator will amend their craft to excellence. Ethan is primarily an artist, not a writer. He hasn't written Cyberfrog in a little under 20 years at this point, hence why the main flaws with the comic are in the writing and pacing, not the art. Actually I wouldn't find that much disagreement between your take and Just Some Guy's. Where the difference lies is point of view. He is reviewing Blood Honey critically and objectively as a seasoned colleague of Van Sciver. If he says something is "Okay," I take his comment as coming from an editor's point of view, as if to say "approved for publication" and that it's sufficient to call professional work. Professional work is what us less talented amateurs or total non-artists (like me) would call "really good work." On the other hand, where he heaps praise on the artwork detail, this is high praise indeed, considering the source. The comment about kinetics appeared to be more advice to Van Sciver than complaint. Merely something he was able to articulate, as a fellow professional, that most of us mere mortals might see intuitively but not be quite able to put our collective fingers on. Imagine Beethoven giving his opinion of Brahms' work. It would surely be more objective than that of a doting fan. Kinda gotta look at JSG's review in that light. The range of points JSG offers here lends credibility to his commitment to objectivity and fairness, one of the things I greatly respect about his videos. In this review, he heaps praise to some aspects, says tells the author not to be a dick in others, and flames those who allow glaring ultetior motivations to affect their published opinions. In sum, I found JSG's review to be the most credible, unbiased, insightful, and competent that I've seen. Despite the neutral tone of the review on balance, my take from it was that van Sciver did a good job, and deserved credit for delivering fairly on his promises, albeit a bit late, and generally accomplishing what he set put to do. Given that Van Sciver's overarching goal was to show that the small independent publisher David really can prevail against the Woke Marvel/DC oligopoly Goliath, he succeeded in that goal.

Personally, I put the issues Ethan has had largely down to him going through non-traditional means of getting the book to customers, and the learning curve associated with doing so. I expect that he'll get better with timeliness and whatever else with time... Though as you mentioned, he also increased the page count massively, so it's understandably late. That said, in the future, he needs to adhere to the announced schedule, which I'm sure he will. I'm not prepared to complain when we're talking about a book that people actually want as opposed to the on-time delivery of dreck to comic shops that no one is buying.
@Jim-Tuner
@Jim-Tuner 4 жыл бұрын
Even with the increased page count, its unreasonably late. You can see by the project history when he started and when he finished the art. If you look at his art productivity, pages divided by time, its clear he was doing something other than drawing for most of that project. But being fair, working for yourself is also a learning experience. Alot of people have an adjustment to make the first time they don't have a boss holding them accountable.
@TJ347
@TJ347 4 жыл бұрын
@@Jim-Tuner Fair point, but you also have to look at how many people complained versus those who haven't. Apparently, most customers were fine with waiting longer to get more pages for their money, while a few were vocal about his failure to deliver on schedule. Majority rules I guess.

@allamericanslacker2378 4 жыл бұрын
There were multiple reasons his project was late. I'm not excusing him for it, but I think people should consider that this is his first time self publishing, and he had no idea how it worked when going into it. From what I remember of his streams, those covers were made in another country, and had to be shipped to him once they were made. He also expanded the book a couple times, and there were related things he was working on to go with it, like those trading cards he made. As far as I know, those weren't just clips of pictures from the comic itself, but were original works, so he had to take time to draw all those as well. It was also pushed back by people repeatedly asking him to reopen it on indiegogo, so they could purchase it as well. He was also complaining about pain in his drawing arm for a while, and that was bound to slow him down too.

It reminds me of the early days of Image. Famous artists tried to write their own stories with mixed results, but it didn't keep Image from succeeding in those early issues. Their genuine enthusiasm and over-the-top art largely made up for the very real writing problems in the books, and the same will be true here. Often a weakly-written comic that is a labor of love is more engaging than an expertly-written comic just thrown together to meet a monthly deadline for the big two. It matters when a creator puts himself into the work.

I thought cyberfrog was a fun begining to what looks to be an interesting series. Not a masterpiece but not trash. The art has to be the highlight with it honestly being breathtaking in my opinion and the story is a solid opener for a hopefully epic story. My only grip is that it doesn't feel epic enough and I feel at this point it lacks a cirten quality in the story telling that other comics like jawbreakers and Requiem for the crazies have in the sense that they have this amazing potential for being honest master works if handled right if that makes sense. Like jawbreakers is good on multiple levels and can be looked at from multiple different angles and still be good and interesting same with Requiem of the crazies but I feel like cyber frog lacks that spark of potential I feel like with cyber frog you get what you get in a sense but with the other two you get what you get and so much more but I've got to remember that these are all the first bits of there respected stories and there's still a bit to go for all of them. So in conclusion cyber frog is a great (about a 4 or 5) on a scale of passable to spectacular

Get a refund when refunds are open. That goes for everyone. Sell the book to reimburse yourself if you must. As far as your payment into someone's IndieGoGo, you're not entitled to have it refunded. You committed your support to that person's work. Once fulfillment has started, you cannot reasonably expect a refund.

Speculation here: likely all versions use the same paper to save on printing costs. It can all be done as one run rather than switch out different rolls and settings. Cost per would be reduced by doing it all together.

SciFi4Me ya that’s my thought, the team up cover was originally supposed to be square bound. I never saw anything saying otherwise. But the cost of adjusting the prints would have been pretty expensive so I get it. Just wish that he had put the updates into the campaign

Got my copy on Friday, The only criticism I have is the techy looking font coupled with the fact that the chromium cover makes the book keep trying to close made reading it a bit of a strain. That being said, I am by no means a comic veteran so your mileage my vary. Worth the buy tho just for the visuals alone!

Well said, as always JSG. I agree with pretty much everything you said, only real difference being that I liked how it ended. I understand your criticism of it though, and you made a good comparison with the ESB/RotJ. Also like you said, I love the interaction and relationship between Cyberfrog, Salamandroid and Heather. In my tweet to Ethan, I mentioned that was my favorite part of the whole thing. One other thing that impressed me is, while the writing and pacing does definitely need some refinement, I thought it was good for Ethan's first job as a full book writer. (I may be mistaken, but he makes it sound like, other than the original Cyberfrog, he's been doing all art and basic character or story concepts for a long time.) Again, great review, especially calling out the lying assholes, and I look forward to your next video!

Ya, there are a few sci-fi writers I follow that have the same problem. I notice that social media is important for advertisement, but so many just spend all of their time on it picking fights and they don't write the book. Twitter especially has this problem. You definitely see the worst (whether it be their morality or intelligence) of a person by skimming their twitter feed and they can't ever seem to stop. This is probably due to a large enough crowd cheering/egging them on.

Good Review. I have similar thoughts regarding the story. Part 3 felt like a Prologue for 'Rekt Planet' but it didn't bother me too much. The SCHEDULE for the next one is the only issue I have. The wailing about the Paper quality--well, that's mostly people looking desperately to find something to forward their CHOSEN narrative about Ethan. It's meaningless to me. The only note I'd make is that I know Ethan DID offer refunds to a point. I think he cut them off when the books went to print, and I don't blame him for that.

I recieved my copy a week ago and yes it isnt %100 perfect but it is leaps & bounds better than what the alternative (Marvel & DC) is shoveling out (💩) by comparison. One must take into consideration the fact that this comic (and other indy ventures like it) is done without the assistance of a big company & their money to vault these titles into higher stratas of excellence. This project was done by one Man & a small crew, which on its own make the comic an amazing achievement by itself. The quality of the book is amazing, no complaints there. The bonus gifts with the comic book (a CF bookmark, CF trading cards & a CF sticker) make the value I paid ($25/not including shipping) well worth the money. Ethan's attention to detail of the art & Kyle Ritter's wondrous sense of color make them the newest Artist/Inker duo to be reckoned with. My only complaint is the pacing of the story, which I feel will only get better as the CF saga countinues. Aside from the art, my favorite part of the comic book is the fact that there are no ads in the book to derail the immersion of the book itself. Ethan has undertaken a huge venture out of his comfort zone (with lots of hurdles throughout) & landed a hit, with room for more improvement. I am proud for him & will countinue to support ALL CAPS COMICS. Thank you JSG for your review, which was honest/fair/impartial. This is why I countinue to come back to your channel. 🙌 Countinued success to you as well my friend. 😊

I read it yesterday (I got it a while ago but didn't have time until then) and I will say that it's very much the kind of writing you would expect from an 80s or 90s comic (in the best way possible) and the alien/sci-fi stuff felt very much like a good/great Green Lantern story. I liked the battle with the insect-based villains (love insect-based characters, for whatever reason). The only thing I would have an issue with is that most of it is backstory and the rest is set up. Still, it's just the first part. I also kind of wish it had a spine so I could put it on my shelf but that is just me. :)
