There's something so perfect about Cybermen, people who had their emotions forcibly taken away, having this teardrop constantly present on their faces. Like it was frozen in time.

The little tongue thing on the Cybermen’s mouths were so the actors could get a ciggie more comfortably in their mouths while still in costume on a smoke break.

A show like this must consider that time travel absolutely creates multiple continuities, thus explaining the differences in evolutions. It would be much easier to control story continuities if the TARDIS only traveled in space! Remember, the original reason for time travel on the show was so that The Doctor could help cowboys and Romans in Earth's past.

I came up with the idea that they’re converted Voord from “Keys of Marinus” since in a comic they become Cybermen, and since Marinus was a planet confirmed by the 12th Doctor to have originated a sub-species of Cybermen.

Gerry was a good friend… Kit was an ideas man but every word in the script, according to my chum, was his. And the arm and leg ‘struts’ on the Wheel costumes were so fragile the Cybermen could barely move without them coming apart. Hence the use of the old version for the ballet/space walk sequence.

I always thought of the 'mouth tear' as the equivalent of a human facial hair feature, the 'soul patch'. On a Cyberman, it could be a 'soulless' patch...

I actually prefer the original Mondasian Cybermen. No mouth. As a small boy, the open, gaping, mouth without lip movement while talking was petrifying. That, and the human hands, without gloves. Granted, the design overall is terrible, but if they had streamlined the design and kept the creepy, sing song voice and gaping mouth, I'm sure viewers would respond favourably. The 'patients' in gowns and cloth masks (Fall of the Doctor) were more than a little disturbing, too. That's why the Cybermen were so iconic. The human element. Take that away, you just have bog standard, generic robots. "Just reminds you it's a bloke in a costume" you said. The Cybermen are just 'blokes' (or brains) in cybernetic suits....that's the scary part

Hi, I watched their original story back in 1966 as an 8 year old. I was terrified as these nasties could climb upstairs to my bedroom. The music was great in all their 60s appearances and far exceeds the music in their recent adventures. I liked the Wheel in space

The Cybermen are my alltime favourite recurring villains in Dr Who they IMO, are more interesting characters than the Daleks .

I just remember always thinking that it didnt need to go on so long.

I remember, aged 2 at seeing a metal head and when you looked into the tear drop eyes there was nothing there. I was so terrified by this that my parents stopped me watching Dr Who. I realise now that it was the Wheel in Space Cybermen.

I like the idea these are essentially shake and bake cybermen for infiltration missions. Just add genetic material to the little easy to smuggle spheres and it rapidly grows and converts a new cyberman or cybermat, so in a way they were born on that ship and they were never human to begin with, which is kind of scary and explains their sleeker and almost more organic look. I dunno, head cannons and all that.

Great video! I’ve always enjoyed the Wheel in Space. While it’s a bit convoluted plot wise but David Whitaker creates one of the most memorable ensemble crew I’d argue in all of Doctor Who. (The Troughton era definitely used it’s base under siege format to have some strong ones)

Way i reconcile it, Early CyberFaction led to two off-shoot designs. Cyber-Nomads retain the block head design. Late Cyber-Faction is essentially a work in progress design, which we know later as Cyber -Telosian. I ecall Mind Robber once made middle of road designs. Alosm it explains Kroton, who may be a midway Faction to Nomad design.

It seems like there was a conscious effort to show the "Wheelies" to be a transitional model of Cyberman. Their hands still have a recognizable five individual digits but are capped off as three... and in the Telosians are fully three-digited. The "Wheelie" limb hydraulics are delicate and separate compared to the more robust and integrated Telosian hydraulics. The argument could be made that these Cybermen are a different faction or perhaps are adapted for different environments (we've seen smaller Cyberscouts and Cybershades elsewhere in the series) but in the context of the late 1960s before _The Invasion_ muddied the waters further it's pretty clear that you were supposed to assume the Cybermen had always looked like they did in their most recent appearance. Morphological differences between Cybermen are never addressed onscreen by any character in the Classic series and Polly manages to recognize a Telosian Cyberman without ever having seen one before and does not comment on their different appearance. Make what you will of that!

I really didn't minded those Cybermen stories myself I lost count in How many times I watched them? Probably cause They are My Number One favourite Doctor who Villains!😉☮️

The reason the voices change is because during recording the Cybermen voice box (the bit that makes them crackly sounding) broke. They fixed it but couldn’t get the sound they wanted. Also great vid! I love the second doctor Cybermen and appreciate all content I can find related to them.

Can't comment on Televized Version, but the Target Novelization of it is a pretty good read. I might be biased on that point due to the fact I've owned it since the early 80s...

The silly head-nodding business was taken to the extreme in EARTHSHOCK. It wasn't necessary, as the introduction of the transparent jaw panel would help the viewer to identify which Cyberman was speaking - as well as reminding them of the Cybermen's organic past.

As always another brilliant researched video produced by the chosen chimp, must say enjoy all your work clearly each one of these essays are a passion project as a long time Doctor Who fan all I can say is please continue the continuity work is amazing

14:24 I prefer to think of them being on a mission to save us from the pain and suffering of living with emotions in unaugmented bodies. Unless of course the "resources" referred to are us. Alien invasion stories based on taking our minerals or water just make me cringe. There is nothing unique about Earth's materials. Every metal can be more easily extracted from asteroids, especially the really rare heavier ones which on Earth have long sunk down into the mantle. If you want water you'd go for Jupiter and Saturn's ice moons. Europa alone would give you twice all the water on Earth. With a fraction of Earth's gravity and next to no atmosphere, it's far less trouble to haul away too. The only things unique about Earth are the ecosystem and culture. I don't think cybermen would care about those, but if there is a galactic black market in exotic life forms and tribal art it would explain all the UFOs that seem to be sneaking around here!

I really hope they release the Wheel in space. I think the reason it hasn't yet been restored due to them thinking it won't be worth it due to the few people who have watched it speaking for everyone saying its bad so people are less likely to give it a chance. Maybe one day we'll get it as I want to have all the cybermen stories & this is the only one you can't get at the moment. A sad thing & it feels like it'll be an alright episode as it was a better story than the worst cyberman story by the sounds of it its convoluted but its not bad. By the way the worst story is revenge of the cybermen in the classic era & the Timeless children one because the cybermen deserved better. Maybe the other odd chibnal end cyberman story not sure nor new.
