I have zero IT background, and I completed the Google IT certificate. I also enrolled in the GOogle certificate but soon realized building labs needed me to understand subnets and VLANs and needed help. So I had to backtrack to networking, where I came across Jeremy, the IT guy who provides value in this field with the CCNA, which would be valuable for where I am from. Cybersecurity is still young here (Nairobi, Kenya), but getting into networking isn't as hard, and it would be more practical to be a cybersecurity person that way. Thanks for the roadmap.

Took me around 1 year to get into Sys Admin with some background computing knowledge. Next step is to enhance cybersecurity and cloud knowledge to keep growing, this roadmap is very in line with my planning to do that, great job! ❤

speaking of networking jeremy's it lab has a complete ccna course free on youtube 60ish lectures, over 50 packet tracer labs and anaki flashcards ...a LOT of material! I'm starting day 36 today ...after this, I plan to do the coursera google cyber course while concurrently prepping for the security + exam (i'm not planning on taking the ccna exam) ...hoping to get security+ cert by first of year and then decide what's next,

I just came across this and let me tell you, you're doing yourself a HUGE disservice by not taking the CCNA exam. The CCNA has a lot of cisco-related aspects that are quite frankly unnecessary for cyber security. The cisco CLI? Absolutely useless in a cyber role. How to configure a lot of networking devices? Irrelevant to most cyber roles. That isn't to discourage you but make sure you absolutely take the exam if you've gone all the way. It's still a respected cert that'll open plenty of doors for you.

great video as usual sir. i started with the google cybersecurity course & then after completing the first 2 modules, when i was on the networking course, started watching david bombal's videos, since he's the networking guru, and i also wanna study networking in depth even if i dont take the ccna. cisco has some excellent material that they provide for free. also i got a full scholarship for the google IT support cert, and started with the linux/windows course in it. i plan to do all modules in it first, then come back to my google cybersecurity course (good thing i didnt start a subscription of it yet, was auditing thus far). i'm taking the certified in cybersecurity exam (since it's free) next month & then security+ eventually. comptia exams are expensive so even if i study relevant topics of network+/A+ i wont take them, also theyre not nearly as known as sec+ among hiring managers & HRs

Whats a good cyber security online community to check out besides discord or reddit? And somewhere where I can watch live ctf events or something similar.
@MyDFIR
@MyDFIR 11 ай бұрын
Great question, I honestly use discord for communities but if you are looking for something different, if you have meetups in your area (meetups.com) you can search up and find folks with similar interests. That is one way to physically meet people and connect/network. As for watch live CTFs, there might not be a ton that you can watch live as I believe that would be against the rules but you can watch out for CTF events happening soon by checking out posts on X (Twitter). I personally use #CTF and DFIR to see any upcoming ones. As for live webinars, BrightTalk is a good resource to check out. Search up Cybersecurity and off you go! Hope that helps

Hey, great insights thank you! I'm working as a junior CSEC consultant, and atm I'm on a IAM role as a Siteminder Admin and junior architect. I haven't explored other csec areas, and not sure where to go from here. I'm studying for the CEH certification which seems promising (I'll take both theory and practical exam). Any advice for the future? ^_^ thanks so much!

Hi, Thank you for making this video. I'm on course 2 of the Google Cybersecurity Professional Certification. I was wondering if it would be equally effective taking ISC2 Systems Security Certificate Practicioner instead of Security+. I would really appreciate your opinion/advice. Thank you
@MyDFIR
@MyDFIR 7 ай бұрын
I want to say yes but in the land of job hunting, Security+ IMO is still on top. However don’t let that stop you from taking it if you are already planning on it. Knowledge is power 💪

Do you have some free alternative learning for this? Or give me insights about what will be the entry jobs you need to get into cybersec or DevOps. I'm thinking about becoming helpdesk first, then sys admin, Does that sound close? Then what's next after system admin? Can I go over to Cybersec sec then? TIA
@MyDFIR
@MyDFIR 10 ай бұрын
Free resources are definitely out there, may have to dig for it - off the top of my head, something like ISC2 Cybersecurity can introduce you to cybersecurity but further research and learning is required. If you want to go into DevOps, you will require some coding knowledge. The path of helpdesk to sysadmin to cybersecurity will be extremely beneficial. You will learn the skills to really understand how computers work along with how organizations configure their domain. The more you understand how things work, the better you can defend / attack it 😃 Hope that helps!

Question, why Google cyber security over ISC2 Certified In Cyber?
@MyDFIR
@MyDFIR 11 ай бұрын
Great question! TLDR: Google has hands-on labs. I looked into ISC2 Certified In Cyber, the benefit here is that it is FREE (Please correct me if I am wrong) and it is structured in a way that will introduce you to domains within cybersecurity however I believe they do not offer any labs and just theory. This is where it falls short IMO. Compare that to Google, you get both theory and labs however the downside, it is behind a subscription pay wall. Hope that answers your question!
@obithunter

@@MyDFIR got it, I was just looking at it as an ISC2 cert vs certificate of completion. Then you have the membership there too

So I am currently enrolled in the google cybersecurity certificate and almost done with the foundations. Would you recommend that I backtrack to the google IT certification and then go back to cybersecurity?
@MyDFIR
@MyDFIR 11 ай бұрын
Great question, Do you have any IT experience/knowledge? If the answer is no, yes I would look into learning more about the topic however, it doesn’t have to be Google IT certification, it can be anything (reading, another course, etc) but do get some theory into IT. If you do have some knowledge surrounding IT, continue on with your course and think about supplementing your learnings with networking fundamentals. Hope that helps!

Great question, what is your background like? (Education/work exp) - Trying to figure out where you might stand regarding security fundamentals. If you find yourself not confident in your fundamental theory, I would suggest learning that material via books or courses found online. Otherwise, if you are confident, you could start looking into hands-on labs and portfolio building. From there, update your resume & LinkedIn profile and you should be in good shape. Hope that helps!

@@homieee7073 Gotcha, Red teamers becoming SOC analysts are incredibly scary (good thing) and vice versa. Have you tried applying to some SOC positions? Do that along with what I suggested earlier and you'll be golden!
