Hey I’ve got some really great news to share with you, Jesus Christ, the Son of God, died on a cross and resurrected on the third day so you may all have eternal life. If you believe and repent of your sins and put your faith and trust in Him as you would a parachute jumping off a plane at 25000 feet up in the air, He will give you eternal life in heaven as a free gift and I promise you, He will change your life forever as He did mine. He is the ONLY way to heaven and He loves you all. Please think deeply about this with urgency because this is your eternal life and soul, you don’t know when you could die, meaning you could die at any moment, so please consider this with all your heart. If anyone tells you that Jesus isn’t the only way, they are lying to you and they don’t care about your future..

Im not in a Cybersecurity role… but I’m a Network Engineer II… with 0 certs, no college education, nada. I took a role as a Help Desk 6 years ago not knowing anything about IT. Went from Help Desk, Sys Admin I, Field Tech I, Field Tech II, Implementations Engineer (Worked on a ton of networking task here), and finally to Network Engineer II. Wanting to learn more and grow allowed me to move so fast, of course with the right opportunities. Work hard people, things wont happen overnight. I tell people getting a certification is like passing the written portion of the driving exam. It means you know what the steering wheel is, and what the turn signals are, but it doesn’t mean you can drive. Getting certs is very foundational knowledge, and you have to build your own systems, network, apps etc to show that you know you’re stuff. Especially when it comes to cyber security. Security means you need to protect something. Which means you need to know how things work, and most importantly how things break. You only learn those things be doing and putting in the work. If you’re not a curious person and/or don’t like putting in the work, tech is not for you. Things change every day, and if you’re not willing to stay on the beat, then you’ll be left behind quick.

Man you just totally made such a perfect point. Yes it’s possible to get there but it takes a heck of a lot of work! The six-figure people are often people with significant experience in other areas of IT. I was able to slide into Cybersecurity at that six-figure mark immediately because my career spans 15 years with positions in Networking, Database Admin, Coding and DevOps. I’m definitely not saying a beginner can’t get to the six-figure mark right away. Often it’s the exception rather than the norm. For those looking to start keep at it! Thank you!!! People have to comprehend this …Cybersecurity and the whole entirety of tech require hands-on skills. Knowledge of concepts is cool but can you compile what you learned and facilitate a virtual or on-premise home network lab with security methodologies? For example, can you configure/deploy a firewall, EDR, IDS/IPS tools can you troubleshoot various endpoints, are you willing to read a plethora amount of documentation on the tools required and that’s like 30% of the task. IT is a lucrative field but it’s not a cash grab and should be respected just like any other notable industry

I get that. But I busted my ass for over 10 years to barely cap out at $50,000. If you're telling me I can start a little higher than that and in 2-5 years get double? I get that you want to set realistic expectations. But where a lot of people see "omg you get paid 65k for 45 hours of work and you have to work really hard for 2-3 years before they let you get six figures" like that's slave labor. People like me who actually worked 60-80 hours for pennies, that sounds like heaven.

I got to six figures in my first role before graduating and only had one cert. But I also recognize that that’s an anomaly. A lot of people out here are more capable than I am and working just as hard or harder and didn’t come across the same opportunity. I’d never sell to somebody that you can do exactly what I did, because it’s not realistic. This video is reality for most people. People who want to get into cybersecurity for the money need to see more vids like this and have the wake up call that one cert won’t magically write you a six figure check.

You are correct about this video. Been in IT and currently a senior network analyst. Depends on the company you are working with. The jobs that will pay nearly a six figure salary are with government contractors or directly with the government as their funds are consistent and lot higher than private companies such as a local cyber security company in your city. Government has more security clearance and do require certs 100% of the time due to DoD requirements. Sadly, if you do the government route, you are stuck with folks who have no passion for what they do and there is a lack of creativity and employee engagement because government jobs in that class do not focus on employee - they focus on metrics and the processes ordered by a higher commission in your department. You get paid well, but I warn you that you will not get the same level of TLC from private companies that will take care of you. Your position can be replaced at anytime and are not worried they will lose a person. You dispensable in government sectors so I suggest you stay away from it UNLESS the company operates as a sole owner who has a government contract but the company also offers services to 3rd party. For the most part, Certs are just an HR checklist for private and corp. Most places hire based on experience. They call your previous employer and validate your experience and the position and that is it.

Took me 6 years to get my bachelors while working on the side as a cameraman / car detailer / studio tech and volunteering for cyber patriots. Got my cert before graduating (sec+) found sec+ useless in my situation. Got my ISC^2 assoc cert since i dont have 4 years of experience (4 years since I have a degree, but its normally 5). Got a job as a tech... was never able to use my education because of how the company operated. Didnt like said company because there were certain policies and sop that I ddnt personally agree with.. so I quit. Pay was pretty good, but doesnt feel satisfying. Bottom line is, I love cyber and I dont mind not earning a lot of money, as long as I get to work with like minded individuals. That being said, I decided to join the military. To be in this field, youll get burned out real quick if you dont get genuine satisfaction doing what youre doing and believing something you dont 100% agree with. Money is jusy money guys. If anything its just allowance to get you new toys to play with. 😂 If you want certs that actually matter, get a starter cert, get a job. Show your worth, then get sponsored to get GIAC certs.

But I have to admit that sometimes I get offended when people brag about these big salaries without being real about the fact that that’s often not where you start. AND neglect the fact that you’ll need to have a lot more knowledge than just cybersecurity to truly succeed. It’s like a slap in the face to people who’ve put in over 10 years of experience in all different areas of IT to get to that point. Often it’s having in-depth knowledge about about several areas beyond cybersecurity like networking, coding, databases and DevOps is what positions you best for those higher salaries. Yeah anybody can get there. But it don’t just come like that.

It’s enough to get you into the door especially if you’re new to the industry and actually want to learn technical skills, as long as you know the basic fundamentals & got a little of hands on experience that lets you know what your getting yourself into you can definitely land a job whether as an IT specialist or a entry level analyst. Cybersecurity is a field for people that actually want to actively learn doesn’t matter how experienced you are nobody is perfect it’s a field where you always have to constantly learn and stay aware even if you don’t know everything you always have a solid team that will help you everyone’s journey is different. If someone thinks they’re going to land a six figure job right out the gate just by a certificate they are delusional probably $60k-$70k max if your just starting off but if you feel as if you’ve developed the skills & you’re confident then I’d say it’s time to look for a different organization that will pay you more.

I agree with this but I still recommend getting certs or a degree . Whichever u want . From my experience I didn’t get a cert and just started making big bucks I got a decent job , then from there I worked my way up. The certs show you’re qualified but that’s not the only thing they look at experience matters too. It’s competitive also some ppl have degrees to increase earning potential but then on the other hand I know ppl with no certs no college degree who got a help desk job. Then field tech And evolved to network engineer system admin and etc… so honestly there’s a lot of routes to go and not everything will work for everyone. Different routes will work for different people

There's a whole lot of capping in some of these comments. But do you. Lying to people or phrasing your experience in specific ways to make it seem like you did it further hurts people's chances. A Sec+ without any IT experience is worthless. However, you can connect with your current employers' IT teams, volunteer to come on projects, and ask to shadow people. Build relationships and provide impact, and when opportunities present themselves, they will think of or at least connect you with those who can align you with what you want to do.
