In our third and final video from Malaysia, we cross the Central Forest Spine - a mountainous and much less populated part of the country that was very challenging after weeks of flat coastal riding! We took some time off in George Town, Penang before cycling through Kedah and Perlis, two beautiful states with spectacular limestone karst formations and pleasant roads through rice paddies.
This section was some of our favorite riding in Malaysia!
Time Frame: Early November 2022
Distance: 433 miles
Riding Days: 10

We took their advice respectfully and moved on quickly, but as a traveler you never know the truth of the advice you receive because sometimes people mess with foreigners and try to scare them. Judging by all the comments we've received on this video, it seems the advice we received was good and the locals were being helpful. We're very glad we didn't meet a tiger!

When you were cycling in Perlis towards Wang Prachan Border Post, I hope you actually stopped at the Wang Kelian View Point, which was at the top of the hill just before you cycled down towards Wang Prachan. I didn’t see any clip of Wang Kelian in your YT video. Wang Kelian Viewpoint would have afforded you fantastic panoramic vistas of Perlis. I actually stopped here three times during my three different rides in Perlis. Hope you guys are recovering well in Da Nang now.

People are afraid of tigers, but they do not pose any real danger to us cyclists. The most dangerous animal in this part of the world is wild elephants, who can be very territorial and aggressive. I cycled the exact same route myself a few years ago and really enjoyed the mountains connecting the east and the west coast. Riding it with food poisoning is not fun though. But it really is a great part of the world.
@jonmath4182

I was ready to write a comment reminding you to not go too near if you get to see an elephant, especially so that the both of you are only on bicycles instead of in a car, because elephants there have been known to get angry for no apparent reason (motorists were only going about their journeys traversing the roads as usual, didn't do anything to provoke them) and 1 or 2 of the elephants would charge towards the passers by, who ofc had to turn around and drive helter-skelter away immediately! There have been several yt videos about this too, it's not bs. And then your video talked about the local guy coming over on motorbike to caution you two about the tiger. No guys, that ain't bs either. That's real jungle you are crossing. All kinds of wild scary dangerous animals there. Hopefully none you'd encounter at too close a range! Stay safe! 👍
@RollingExistence

They do seem like they can be unpredictable! It was really cool seeing the elephant tracks but we were definitely a little nervous about the prospect of crossing one face to face 😳 Luckily we didn't have any scary encounters!
