This Ed Vettel-designed traditional wooden coaster opened in 1940 & remains unchanged other than the trains, which were originally built by Vettel & later rebuilt by Lakeside Amusement Park.
Lakeside Amusement Park is located in Denver, Colorado.

By far one of my favorite roller coasters of all time. The park is a relic that feels like it's rundown. But that's all part of the charm of it. Long live Lakeside.

I worked at Lakeside for one season in the early 1990's and from what I've seen it hasn't changed much. That's part of its charm as it's like stepping back in time, but I'm afraid it won't be around much longer if they don't do something. I'd love to see them raise the money to demolish the abandoned race track on the property and build a new section with modern rides, I'm thinking some state-of-the-art flat rides and maybe a Eurofighter coaster. It would double the size of the park and attract more customers without compromising the historical integrity of the original park.

I time this coaster every year (my favorite in the whole world) and it gets a few seconds slower every year. Think back in the day it was around 1 min, now its like 2 1/2 lol (again it is 70+ years old but still very much awesome). One thing you HAVE to keep in mind about Lakeside is that it is NOT a modern park. Yes it is "run down" to you modern kids, to the rest of us non crazy thrill seekers, this means HISTORICAL, built in 1908. It is one of the only places left that has vintage Art Deco style. If they made it a 6 flags it would lose all its charm. The park is safe regardless of what you hear from all the Texans and Californians who move here. Take it from a local, totally worth the visit. It is only $3 to walk around, $14.50 for unlimited rides OR you can go ala cart and pay per ride. (They Cyclone is $3 to ride) Great place to hang out or go on a date.
@Kittyhat
@Kittyhat 7 жыл бұрын
It's run down because they don't take care of anything. Just look at a park like Kennywood that takes care of everything they own and keeps it in top shape, I guarantee their wood coasters haven't slowed down a second. Lakeside is just poorly run and it hurts to see such classic rides in such bad shape.
@RonaldDScum
@RonaldDScum 5 жыл бұрын
Kittyhat A better example I’d say a park like Knoebels is a better example. Kennywood has certainly modernized. Whereas Knoebels is old school yet still is in VERY GOOD shape!

I’m a local too and this is 100% right on the money. I way prefer parks like this to newer, expensive theme parks with little or no personality. I last went to Lakeside in 2000 and judging from all the footage I’ve been watching, it looks like the place hasn’t change much at all. It was an absolute joy then, I’m sure it still is now.

This was my first “real” coaster that wasn’t a kiddie coaster. I live in Colorado and love Lakeside! I’ve probably riden this 30 or so times in the 15 years that I’ve been riding it. I swear that turn out of the first drop gets rougher and rougher every year! Maybe that’s just me getting older, I don’t know. It hurts my back now. I rode it 5 times in a row about two weeks ago. Never felt that much back pain after a trip to a park ever! It’s pretty good for a 79 year old! It’s still got the moves!

I'm a local who grew up going to Lakeside, as well as to the old Elitch's, and have fond memories of both places. Both had an old-fashioned charm to them that modern amusement parks lack. Lakeside has done pretty well at maintaining that original feel over the years, which is not easy to find. It is quite small-scale, but that adds to its unique character. I'm glad it was part of my childhood's landscape.

@@LukeLovesRose The Wildcat was literally the first roller coaster I ever rode by myself, and it left an indelible, thrilling memory! I rode in the very first car. I was just a kid (10? 12?). It was scary, but I loved it at the same time. Fantastic #2 roller coaster after Mister Twister.

I grew up with the Vettel-designed Zephyr coaster at New Orleans' Pontchartrain Beach, with its beautiful art deco platform and silver trains. The Zephyr was a large out-and-back design that was fast from start to finish. It also began with a tunnel, and the first drop had a slight turn which ended in an interesting short straightaway that was banked up to the right, which created the sensation of it coming off the track. These banked straightaways of the Cyclone remind me of that design. Sadly, both the park and the coaster were torn down in the early 80s. The later videos of the Zephyr that I've seen show tunnels at the bottom of the hills; these were not part of the original design. I didn't think they added much to the ride, either in fun or aesthetics. Too bad there are so few of Vettel's coasters left.

That's actually the most I've ever seen of the inside of the tunnel thanks to some nice creepy aging :) I can still remember when they added the neon red-white-blue lights on the lift hill.
