Cylinder Replacement Gone Bad - Grumman Style: Annual on airplane was signed off with a compression check needed 10 later since it was at 68/80 leaking past exhaust. Second check after 12 hours was 50/80 leaking past rings or intake. Pulled cylinder to change and discovered broken top compression ring, and discovered spalled cam lobes and spalled cam followers (tappets). Time for a engine overhaul.

the corrosion problem is probably partially due to the engine sitting for extended periods with old engine oil. Combustion byproducts combine with water condensation to make corrosive acid and these acids will destroy cams, cranks, bearings and cylinders very quickly. it is very important to change oil before the engine sits even if the hours since the last change are relatively low. Obviously the person responsible for this aircraft has been deferring maintenance for quite a while.

That is why when you start any engine The oil must get hot enough to get rid of the Moisture. A lot of Pilots that do not know any better go out to the field and start there engine and start it for 5 min or 10 min. then shut the engine off. OMG they are killing their Engine little by little. No one tells pilots not to do this. The A and P should be telling the Owners. That is never happen as most or 99% of the A and P's do not know that.

@@ctsteve1967 Yeah, if you have any sort of vehicle that's started only occasionally, you need to run it 30 minutes or until the oil gets up to 180F, when you do start it. Not getting the oil to full temperature is worse than not starting it at all.

The comments are more fun than the video. Apparently they all expected you to have rolled the airplane into a NASA clean room and had a SuperUber Certified Grumman A&P Mechanic with 130+ years experience and wearing a clean-suit to spend 6 months removing each part and clean/inspect/measure/test/calibrate/refurbish them one by one before going on to the next nut or bolt. And the wailing in hell when a CARPENTERS hammer was used to strike a drift instead of a Grumman Certified $500.00 dead blow hammer brings tears to my eyes. Keep up the good work. :)

I had an old Tiger that looked just like this parked next to my then new aircraft about 6 year ago. The guy who owned it always seemed to have to perform maintenance before flight. One time I arrived at the hangar and he was reverse bleeding the brakes. I asked him what the problem was but I can't remember now what he said. But I do remember he said he had to do it if it hadn't been flown for a while. It looked just like this one in the vid with the cowl off. I'm thankful he never asked me if I'd like to go for a a ride. Would have suggested we go for a spin in mine!!

Long hours sitting in the weather, that evidence of water in the oil would not be restricted to just that problem. I'd bet there's extensive corrosion right through that plane. I would also never pull a cylinder without a complete overhaul after such extreme compression loss, it's just asking for trouble, but looking at the rest of the plane, it should be a scrap job anyway.

The biggest issue with GA aircraft is lack of use and poor storage. It's quite obvious this plane spent the bulk of its life tied down outside. Sitting. Rotting. High levels of condensation and moisture internal to the engine caused corrosion and pitting. From the corrosion evidence on the firewall, the fuselage and wing internals should all be inspected for hidden corrosion at all critical areas.

And then before he gets an answer he's turning the engine over WITH THE PROP UNDER HIS ARM!!! If he's unsure of the switch state, WAIT! Even if you ARE sure, stay out of the blade path! There's a little thing called a bad kill wire that WILL let the engine fire, and on THIS wreck, I'd assume EVERY wire was broken until I visually proved otherwise. Yeah, there was a number of things going on in this video that was disturbing. A general lack of best practices and haphazard application of mechanical technique to start with. Not cappping lines. Not protecing the open induction port. Not removing baffle. Not disconnecting all the plug wires. Not determining top dead centre of the piston on the affected cylinger. Not manually grounding the magnetos. Not bagging parts as dissasembly occurs. Hitting the valve shaft with what appears is a metal punch, not a brass or fibre punch. The general condition of the cam and lobes made it lucky you found these conditions because this engine was not airworthy. Lots of jocularity considering how messed up and grotty that engine and engine bay was.

AVCO stamped rocker covers are old. I'd bet this engine has never had a major. Two numbers punched in the rocker shaft boss... cylinder done twice. Cam spalling due to rust. Either not run often or not long enough to drive off moisture. I'm sure it's full of metal from the lifter/cam failure but odds are the crank is a standard. Rough but salvageable. Oil analysis might have caught that cam spalling, probably would have shown up as high Iron on the report. Then again considering the condition of the rest of the plane, I doubt the prior owners were conscientious enough to do something like oil analysis. Another tell tale sign would have been metal pellets in the oil filter. The chipped off material has to go somewhere. Would be interesting to see what the bearings looked like, I bet they were shot too.

Been told it was a great learning tool, and Grumman designed her to be simple, safe and with little automation so students would get used to a higher work load and greater speed on installed power . Kinda like teaching a guy to drive on a 5 speed mg, rather than an automatic toyota.. manual tank switch, higher performance, the student would come out of the syllabus more confident than on a 172, or a Cherokee.. it doesn't coddle the student, and they can transition more easily to older aircraft with less automation, or higher performance aircraft due to it's own higher performance,.. Strikes me as a good investment for a flight school. I think this was Grummans philosophy when Roy LoPresti modded her up from Bede's design..my opinion they should have sold her abroad as a military liason/ trainer instead of breaking into the saturated us market.. India, South East Asia, South America would have been great markets for this plane. give it some more power and range and it would do very well in Brazil..too bad to see this example in such bad shape..

I would think that that kind of cam damage was leaving a lot of metal in the oil filter no? When I do my O-290 annual, I cut the filter and remove the pleats and wash them in varsol, then drop in a neodium name tag magnet into the dirty varsol and swirl it all around to pick up whatever ferrous metal was washed out. So far all I get is a little ring of ferrous grey paste sticking to the magnet. If my cam was going I'd expect to see larger fragments or chips or slivers of steel.

Time between overhauls is based on engine hours not decades tied down in a field. Light use may also allow oil on internal parts to dissipate and allow moisture to get at that metal. Time based atrophy takes a tole, like the Corvette a mother was keeping for her now deceased son driven less than 100 miles a year since the 80s. Just damp winter/spring/fall cycling outside can do that given enough time.

I'm not an airplane mechanic, but I fly them - in all areas of aviation, there is somewhat of an attitude that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. This may sound lazy, but there is actually good data to show that messing with things too much CAUSES more problems than it prevents. That being said, there are annual inspections which are mandatory, and depending on how particular your local mechanic is, a plane could find itself in the condition as seen in this video. There are some modern methods involving engine monitors and oil analysis done at time of oil change that can prevent the issues shown. Another cost to worry about for sure, but small when you are talking about the safety of you and your family.

A good lesson for all pilots who own older aircraft, if you get your plane back from annual and they didn’t have any snags, it doesn’t mean you have a perfect aircraft, it means they did a shit job or snags weren’t approved to be fixed by the owner. Why would you need a VTEC when airplane engine operates at a very small range of power setting. VTEC is for automobile that operates from idle to WOT and back time after time. If the automobile operates at 75% - 100%, then VTEC is a waste of mechanical complexity.
