The "sunk cost" thingy is my firm belief in the culprit. How expesive a "buy in" will sort of keep someone shoveling more good money after bad, towards a product they bought as a mistake - because it was "so popular." Three seperate books at $50 to $60 to start with as in one infamous RPG? Then comes in an expansion full of new options at another $50/$60. Then a campaign book - another $50/$60. Real issue of a money pit, that will eat all the money and give back nothing. Starting out early without a firm clue as to what is or isn't a good value - and just being financially trapped by the mistake. Then comes the "homebrew years" of continually trying to get the books to do what they were not designed to do. Which is a money pit that eats up a lot of time instead. Add in a reluctance to admit a mistake - which is too prevalent. Single system gamer eventually becomes sullen and unhappy gamer. Which impacts how the game is presented and played at the table as well. Yeah, been there. I escaped. I prefer my core RPG system to be in one book instead of across three or more - feels better.

I've had my eye on this one for a while. Will definitely pick it up at some point to do a deep dive. QotV: I've done a fair amount of RPGs during the modern day, though mostly with a fantastic edge... Ran a Matrix game for a while with the Cypher System a few years ago, then a single game of Super Secret RPG Project, and a whole truckload of D20 Modern back in the day. It's fun, but maaaan, you gotta keep the politics off the table. Hard to do with whole turbulent the past fifteen years have been. Keep on keepin' on, SoS! You're banging on all cylinders!

QotV: Never ran/played in a game in a modern setting completely devoid of fantastical elements. We've played that one Game from the beginning, and I'm recently starting deprogramming myself, mainly focusing on Cypher as an easy alternative/jumping off point.

I really enjoyed writing up d20 Modern characters, but couldn’t find anyone who wanted to run or play the game with me. That said, it was back in the day when I wasn’t as bold of a tabletop RPGer as I am today, and I didn’t want to volunteer to run a game. Now, I’ll show up with something new at my local game store and look for anyone who looks bored.

The new "Everyday Heroes" is the third party 5e version of the old D20 Modern - just in case you still were interested. I personally think Cypher or Savage Worlds better, but that book is an option.

This setting book is great for presenting the "hazard as threat" in a manner comparable to monster stats. Information which is great for any Cypher system game. That the special Type they offer only goes to Tier 3 is a bit of ... meh ... to me. Otherwise, everything else is top tier... The crew dynamic is very cool. A variant of the notion is offered in Stay Alive, for when horror is supposed to potentially burn through chaeacters. Overall, I am glad I got the book. I just also know I'd have to build up the higher Tier content for my table just to get them onboard.

I guess the only modern setting with out any supernatural elements was Twilight 2000

Question of the day: Modern setting for me was the White Wolf World of Darkness and especially Vampire the Masquerade. Crossed over the 'new' World of Darkness, even. Lots of books. Took me years to realize the entire premise of their settings offended my core principles and morals. The nihilistic depravity was corrosive to the very soul. I find it repugnant. From there, I am a bit averse to modern mostly as the bad taste that White Wolf left in my mouth. I also found I want settings lighter and brighter overall. Or at least to be a moral protagonist shining a light into the darkness. ... Oops, fantastical as bleep. But that was it, that was the one.

If modern means no fantastical elements than my experience is none at all. I've only ever played in modern fantasy/SF games to date and most of them weren't modern at the time and well, I guess Cyberpunk 2020 is historical fiction from four years ago onwards. As to the two that could have counted as set in the year we were in at the time, they were World of Darkness and Feng Shui. My experiences with World of Darkness were fighting to make a terrible system that encouraged players to play terrible characters work...and I failed. Never going back. My experience with Feng Shui was it was rediculous but fun. Unfortunately, despite that it was agreed upon by the playgroup's players as the best thing that GM had ever run, he said he just wasn't any good at it and went to other systems. Sometimes one just doesn't luck out. Would like to go back to Feng Shui someday and honestly, will probably have to solo it due to lack of friends who are interested. As far as modern stuff goes, if it doesn't have some fantastical aspect to it like aliens or robots or cryptids, my attitude is always: Why am I not learning to do it for real instead? Or playing with my pets, working on my physical health, etc... I guess I'm not the right mindset for non-fantastical modern RPGs.

I've been playing ttrpgs since the 1970's, yet I have very little experience with modern/non-fantastic settings. The closest I've come is realistic (as in, no super-powered mutants and radiation mostly just kills people) post-apocalyptic settings. So the action mostly focused on survival. Fun for a one-shot, but I never wanted to play a campaign of it. Alas, I fear that I would feel the same about _First Responders_, which is a shame because it is clearly an excellent product.

As a toolkit, the book introduces how to apply it in every other setting - going as fantastical as one wants. So doing the Guards from Ankh-Morpork in the Discworld series is very doable. Specialist cleanup crew for "magical contaminant cleanup" is also a sort of option. The actual setting in the very back is just one way.

I love Cypher System and Numenera. Theres a Humble Bundle of Cypher System right now. But recently partially because of "Safety Tools" and other political things about the company that makes the game... I fell out of love with the system (political stuff such as donating to "Charity" that isn't really charity. Just like you addressed in the video). But even more recently I started feeling more open again. I don't want buyers remorse though.

ACLU, interesting. Can’t rightly agree on this. Practicing religion should balance freedom to practice, of speech and separation between church and state. In other words, religious belief can’t be a legal argument to curb access to a right. One religious groups rights end where the next group’s begin. That squishy, gray area is important. It should stay squishy.
