I agree. There's much more to Cyprus than tourist areas. I suppose that is true of most countries. I've been to Cyprus many times and if you are fortunate to be able to drive you can visit many lovely villages at your own pace rather than a tour. In saying that there are also some well organised very interesting tours also. It's a fascinating country.

The plug sockets and RHD are the only things British about Cyprus now. It’s completely changed in the last 10 years. It’s as if they don’t want anything to do with the British anymore.

Sam Clemmens in "A Tramp Abroad" used his sharp wit on many European things. He skewered the Swiss by praising Lake Lucerne and then going on to describe the true nature of the Chamois. He wrote that it does not have horns, is not a dangerous animal to hunt and in fact the Swiss, including the children catch them readily. Victorians travelled and often expected to find a little England in every port. Americans famously looked for Burgers and fries in France. On a cruise once I commented on the weak coffee and was told that it was deliberately made to please Mid-western American taste as so many passengers were apparently older and mid-western. I was raised on a combination of Scottish foods and German American. I actually enjoyed finnan haddie. But it took a year in Asia as an adult to broaden my taste to include Chinese and Vietnamese food.
