Featuring Derek Jacobi, this video is the best English translation of the french play. I ADMIT THAT I DON'T OWN THE RIGHTS but the videos parts have been on KZfaq for some time and since it wasn't made into a DVD as of yet, I decided to download the video parts and conveniently have it be a full movie. Enjoy this Classic story of Romance, Drama, and Tragedy.

Been looking for this everywhere!! Love this play to bits already, no matter what or who's in it, but this is hands-down my favorite version. Derek Jacobi gives one of the most incredible performances as Cyrano and I'm still not over how utterly it matches what I had in my mind when I first read the story. It's my favorite role of his, and THAT is saying something, considering how amazing an actor he always is in everything he does.

Derek himself says it is the most favourite of all his non- Shakespeare roles.

I saw this on Broadway several times in fall 1984. I got to meet Derek Jacobi, Sinead Cusack, and many other cast members. It was a GREAT experience!!! I also went to see the show again in spring 1985 when the show went to Washington, D.C. I couldn't get enough of it! (This RSC cast did Much Ado About Nothing during the same tour, and Jacobi won a Tony for that show.) I have this Cyrano on VHS, but I no longer have a VCR. Thank Goodness for KZfaq!!!

I watched this production on VHS from the Royal Shakespeare Company when I was a child, perhaps 12 or so. We were avid fans of Sir Derek Jacobi, and we were well familiar with Sinead Cusack, Pete Posthelwaite. This story made such a huge impact on me as a child, and I feel so blessed to have seen this version. With the new remake coming out this year, I wanted to find this version with Derek Jacobi. ❤️❤️❤️ Thank you for uploading this version!

Derek Jacobi is woderful as Vyrano, so wild and full of passion and esprit. He remindsme somehow on Robin Williams, which is a pitty that he did never played this role, he would be also woderful. thanx

Had the VHS copy of this many years ago, and watched it countless times until it was nearly worn out. I never failed to cry each and every time. Hands down the best version of the play I've ever seen, although admittedly I have yet to see Gerard Depardieu's performance. Peter Dinklage gives a beautiful, emotive rendition of the role, but the adaptation he was in is sorely lacking...and the music is atrocious. I still watch it for the lovely play of emotions across his face. But this version here? Genius.

I was lucky enough to see this as a young teen when the RSC had a residency in New York. Even as a very young man I knew that i was in the presence of genius. Then and now, my favorite was the final act. I remember leaning forward on my front balcony seat, completely transfixed and moved by Jacobi's performance. It really was magic.

I saw this in 1984 at RSC in London. As Jacobi reads the letter near the end, the sniffles turned to soft sobs to outright crying. I tried to resist...but failed!

Fantastic to find this. Thanks muchly! I love Depardieu in Rappeneau's movie, and yet I was dismayed to find that beautiful line excised (or not translated?) from his death scene when Cyrano witnesses the falling leaves and gently declares (as he lies dying and Roxane sits sewing) 'ah now I see the year unweaves its tapestry...' - absolutely breathtaking....

It was nice to see, but I loathe Burgess' butchery! Hooker's is, by far, the most true and pure translation in word, spirit and meaning. Search for the b&w film from 1950 if you wish to fall in love with Cyrano all over again. It is nice to see that others love Rostand's masterpiece as I do! :-)
