Cassandane was a Persian noblewoman and the "dearly loved" wife of Cyrus the Great. Cyrus the Great and Cassandane were known to love each other very much. Cassandane said that she found it more bitter to leave Cyrus than to depart her life. Cyrus loved his Persian Queen Cassandane dearly and when she died the entire empire observed a great mourning. Cyrus never recovered from the grief of losing her and stayed inactive for nearly a decade after her death. Cyrus the Great wrote the first Human Rights Charter. United Nations uses the Cyrus Cylinder as a pillar of the earliest declaration of human rights.

In all sources, Cyrus the Great is described as a good king. The great historians such as Will Durant, Richard N. Frye, Arthur Upham Pope, Professor Patrick Hunt, Walther Hinz, Heidemarie Koch, Charles Freeman, etc, etc, and the Great western philosophers, such as Hegel, Nietzsche, etc, etc, all respected and praised Cyrus the Great, the Persian empire and Persia. Xenophon respected and praised Persia and Cyrus the Great. " Many historians as well as writers on human rights, have supported the interpretation of the Cyrus Cylinder as a human rights charter. " Cyropaedia by Xenophon is about Cyrus the Great of Persia/Iran, the founder of the Persian Achaemenid Empire. The Cyropaedia has been consulted as a standard reference of statesmanship by a number of prominent leaders in world history. Many Classical and Western statesmen knew well of Cyrus and his adaptive policies of governance by way of the Cyropaedia.

Thank you for making a video on Cyrus the Great! Very much appreciated. However, the portion covering Cyrus's early life was based on the mythical story told by the Greeks, not the historical account. Also, the battles weren't covered in great depth and detail like the videos for other rulers such as Alexander, Julius Caesar, etc... Additionally, there wasn't much mentioned about the genius administrative system he laid the foundations for which was based on a religious tolerance unlike any other empire that preceded it.

There was no inhumation in Mazdean religion, because the death would make the earth impure. They exposed corpses to birds and animals. The inscription is reported in Greek by Strabo (I century BC), so it's probably a spurious tradition.

@@liriobolaffio3255 there's no hard evidence that that tradition existed in zoroastrianism before the sassanids, especially bc of the several iranian ruler tombs before the sassanids, so it's either that achaemenids weren't zoroastrian which is unlikely or that the tradition didn't exist at first

The best thing about the inscription on his tomb is that countless armies and invading forces came across it over the next two thousand years, and all chose to respect his wishes and leave the tomb alone.

@@MarvinT0606 Strabo stated that when Alexander the Great looted and destroyed Persepolis, he paid a visit to the tomb of Cyrus and commanded Aristobulus, one of his warriors, to enter the monument. Inside he found a golden bed, a table set with drinking vessels, a gold coffin, some ornaments studded with precious stones and an inscription on the tomb. No trace of any such inscription survives. Strabo described it as follows

Alexander then went to Pasargadae; and this too was an ancient royal residence. Here he saw also, in a park, the tomb of Cyrus; it was a small tower and was concealed within the dense growth of trees. The tomb was solid below, but had a roof and sepulchre above, which latter had an extremely narrow entrance. Aristobulus says that at the behest of the king he passed through this entrance and decorated the tomb; and that he saw a golden couch, a table with cups, a golden coffin, and numerous garments and ornaments set with precious stones; and that he saw all these things on his first visit, but that on a later visit the place had been robbed and everything had been carried off except the couch and the coffin, which had only been broken to pieces, and that the robbers had removed the corpse to another place, a fact which plainly proved that it was an act of plunderers, not of the satrap, since they left behind only what could not easily be carried off; and that the robbery took place even though the tomb was surrounded by a guard of Magi, who received for their maintenance a sheep every day and a horse every month. But just as the remoteness of the countries to which Alexander's army advanced, Bactra and India, had led to numerous other revolutionary acts, so too this was one of the revolutionary acts. Now Aristobulus so states it, and he goes to record the following inscription on the tomb: "O man, I am Cyrus, who acquired the empire for the Persians and was king of Asia; grudge me not, therefore, my monument." Onesicritus, however, states that the tower had ten stories and that Cyrus lay in the uppermost story, and that there was one inscription in Greek, carved in Persian letters, "Here I lie, Cyrus, king of kings," and another written in the Persian language with the same meaning.

If he could even comprehend his legacy, it would blow his mind. He is remembered despite the literal rise and fall of dozens of empires, and the passage of thousands of years. If you told him"One day, after hundreds of centuries, a human will walk on the moon, and that human will know your name, as will all educated people of that time, I wonder how he'd take it.

The difference between Cyrus and others is that, you don't have to be a Persian to be proud of yourself when you learn about him, you'd feel proud simply as a human being from any part of the world with any ethnic background.

Cyrus is such an interesting figure in history. He basically went from a child sentenced to be murdered to ruling most of the known world. He was one of the most tolerant Emperors in the ancient world and generally ruled in a fair manner.

well that fact is Achaemenid empire were not fully Zoroastrian, they were followers of Mithra also, or just keeping some of those traditions, which dates back to pre Zoroastrian teachings, and persian society back then were consist of different beliefs and religions and we can see the reflection of that on the big scale for the whole empire policies

You'd think it would be Genghis Khan or Alexander the Great - who sacked cities. Instead, it's the USA and its allies, all while pretending "its for peace". @@magtovi The actual Baghdad and its library was destroyed by Mongolians under the Khan. And it is not America that is the attacker. People in the middle east have fought against each other in disorganized campaigns since the caliphate destroyed much of the infrastructure that survived from antiquity onward. Iran could have become a modern, progressive and powerful nation by now, but If you want to point fingers point them at Abu Bakr who led his horde against the Shas and the late Persian empire, or the religious extremists who were pawns in the hands of western powers from the 90s onward to thwart the growth of middle eastern societies. The United States is simply protecting its interests with a force and craftyness that people in the middle east were not expecting from westerners since WW2. And you can be sure of one thing: it would be a lot deadlier if the west was not regulating itself as strongly as it is at the moment. Don't be fooled into thinking you have seen the full force of the American war machine: that never happened because - for better or worse - congress and politicians have prevented that all the way back to the Vietnam War. Military actions still have to be accounted for before the people at large. And that is good: Otherwise we would have other names lined up next to Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

This man is not just for Persians to be proud of, but for mankind to be proud of. He also wrote the first declaration of human rights, on the cylinder. He was anointed by God in the Torah. He didn't allow slavery in his empire. He freed the Jews from Babylonian captivity. He had temple rebuilt in Jerusalem for God. He got back the valuables that belonged to Hebrews from the Babylonians. The Persians were first people to believe in one God. He deserves the title "Great"

@Conservative Indian yet they are all Iranian people. E.g. Persians, Kurds, Lurs, or Mazandarani are all related to one another both linguistically and culturally. For instance across Iran and beyond the borders people to this day celebrate Nowruz, the Persian/Iranian new year.

As an Iranian I would like to thank Kings and Generals team for this brilliant video, I really enjoyed the video Cyrus the great is like a prophet for us, he's the most understated historical figure, btw you forgot to mention his Cyrus's cylinder which is said to be the first declaration of Human rights, and also there was no mention of his religious and cultural tolerance towards his subjects, and the things that actually entitled him of the title "the great" Anyway thanks again and much love from Iran🇮🇷❤️

The Cyrus cylinder has nothing to do with human rights, and it shouldn't be seen as the world's first declaration of human rights. While the Achaemenid empire was relatively tolerant towards other religious and cultural practices (unlike, for example, the Sassanids which often repressed deviant religious and cultural practices with brute force), it had no notion of human rights. Frankly any document prior to the 16th-17th century should not be considered a human rights document, even the Magna Carta. The Cyrus cylinder mostly served to legitimize his kingship over newly conquered Babylon.

I am from Shiraz where Cyrus tomb is, very simple structure, even Alexander did not destroy the tomb, while Persepolis Darius's palace is walking distance and was burned by Alexander. Cyrus freed all slaves and let people practice their own religions, even built their temple. Destruction, slavery and oppression was against his religion. He was obligated to all nations not just his own nation. According to U.S sources, Cyrus model of ruling the nations was an inspiration for writing American constitution.

The history of Iran is underrated. Iran had so many invasions and difficult times like the Alexander invasion, Mongol terrible empire and Arab conquest. Also around 100 years ago some countries wanted Iran oil and more countries wanting to mess with Iran. sadly with the revolution things between Iran and US have been bad. It's nice that after so many invasions, those empires brought their culture and language to Iran but still Iran has culture although some Arabic words are in the language and some words sound European too.

Cyrus was great not due to his military genius or rulling skills, but for his respect for human rights and refusal of slavery. However, we often hear the term great is given to warlords such as Alexander, Chenghiz khan, Napoleon ... I personally take pride in refusal of slavery in Persian culture. Perhaps the only major civilization that did not build on the shoulders of the slaves and yet made it.

speaking of of the mongols, mentioning tolerance is a little over exaduration. They destroyed cities, executed by thousands and let them pray on the ruins. this is not much of a tolerance. They were just unbelievers themselves and saw the religious to be weak, so they kept them be, as long as there was no clash with the appointed khan.

Birthday Celebrations, Animation, Guitar, and Dessert were invented by Persians. The Persians were the first to develop the practice of lavish celebrations of one's birthday, as well as the art of animation for entertainment and the custom of having dessert after a meal. The Persian civilization also invented some musical instruments which are still in use and guitar is one of them. In the Persian civilization era, some people made a very simple version of a guitar named 'Tar' which was made from a wooden box along with some strings attached. It worked like a small music system and produced music when strings were plucked in a specific manner. This was a great invention at that time because there were only a few musical instruments that time. After some time, the empires became addicted to the guitar music and the musicians used to play it before the empires on a regular basis. It was considered a sign of comfort and relaxation. Today, we have a lot of guitar types which produce different types of music with different tones. All of these guitars are the advanced versions of the original guitar made by the Persian civilization. So we can say that the Persian people worked a lot in the music field too.

All i know persian scientists started to evolve only in islamic era, before islamic era we never heard of persian scientist like ibn sina or alkhawarezmi. We know persia only had medical school which we created by syriac christians who were running from roman empire. The rest of persian art were influenced by other civilizations like babylonian and assyrians. Persians are overrated, persia were only a military superpower with some engineering skills. Thats it.

Cyrus the Great was truly a remarkable leader! His tomb, while simple, is absolutely magnificent. Despite being the "King of kings", he did not commission the largest tomb structure like many ancient rulers did. Yet, his resting place still commands admiration and respect from those who see it today, standing as a testament to his legacy for over 2500 years amidst the turmoil of history!

@Mith Ra Man that's amazing And you don't need to apologize buddy I enjoyed reading your comment and i enjoy these kind of conversations I've watched some videos about India's history and i want to learn even more Ashoka the great became one of my favorite kings in history recently His reign was truly a golden age for India He even personally checked if his people (i mean normal citizens like farmers) were having a good life Both Iran and India have fascinating history and need more attention I'm glad that some of our Zoroastrian ancestors were able to go to India and have a peaceful life there away from those fanatic muslim arabs Arabs tried to conquer India and make indians convert to islam too, right ? If i'm not wrong, Indians had several battles with the muslim arabs Another interesting thing is that it wasn't the only time that Persians had to emigrate to India After Mongol and Temurid invasions, some Persian poets, scientist, philosophers, artist and architects (those who survived or weren't captured by invaders) needed a peaceful place away from all those destructions and so they moved to India Still, that wasn't the last time either When the Safavids took power in Iran, many poets poems weren't appreciated in the Safavid's court or even in the entire country Again, Persian poets moved to India where their works were much more appreciated They gained fame and wealth there and some of them went back to Iran Even during the Ghaznavid rule, unlike the Ghaznavid sultan, Indian kings seems to have liked Ferdowsi's Shahname book

Cyrus wasn't the first great conqueror and ruler because we know Hammurabi who lived long before him. And those who lived in a later period usually admired those who lived in an earlier period.

@@freeman9738 Technically Cyrus was the 1st great conqueror, he conquered nearly 2 million square miles, which wouldn't be beaten until Alexander the Great came. Sargon and Hammurabi can be considered the first conquerors of states, but not great ones, with large armies and incredibly large areas. Cyrus did it as the sole leader, so the title goes to him in my opinion. But then again it is just my opinion. We're friends here debating history in a healthy manner. Have a nice day Bro.

@@klaudioabazi4478 , not fair judgement because during Hammurabi's time human population was much smaller, everything was smaller and less developed. Because if following your logic, then Alexander was the 1st great conqueror because Cyrus's territory was very small compared to that of Alexander, Caesar, Genghis Khan, etc. For his time period Hammurabi's territory was relatively large.

On the standards of Conquest i put Cyrus as the 1st great conqueror, not necessarily the greatest, Alexander has that title in the ancient world, and Genghis Khan overall. But i am glad you disagree with me. It doesn't mean that i am right. But i see it as such in the annals of warfare, it evolved significantly through Cyru's conquests.

And although the Persian Empire came to an inglorious end at the hands of Alexander in 330 B.C, it had a lasting legacy on the subsequent development of world civilizations and future empires. Indeed, the Persian Empire was a pivotal empire because it was the first true empire that set the standard of what it meant to be an empire for future ones.
