Thanks for making a video about the firing pins. It looks like you go all out to try to make a improvement in your performance. I have found that the biggest difference that I have gotten is with the Neil walk 22LR die. It will make ordinary ammo amazing and amazing. Now the cat is out of the bag.

In RFBR firing pin shape and strike is not about ES or SD but about firing pin induced vibration affecting the accuracy , would be interesting to test that as well

Thanks for posting this Josh . If it gave a proportional improvement on ammo with a greater spread and sd , it could prove to have greater effect on cheaper ammo . Did you use a Modcam pin , or Pete’s for the modded pin?

Questions not comments, Do you know of anyone who makes a 6 power hunter BR scope and sources for SK rifle match. As per your suggestion to buy one or two boxes of each lot then a quick test of each and a buy of a brick or two of the best lot. I know you have posted the information before but I couldn't find it again. Thanks

Firing pins are a fun tweak and easy to do with a file and some time. That little bit of difference adds up when it comes to keeping precision at long range with rimfires. However, I’m not a fan of the modification as shown in the video which also appears to be the modification design that Modacam uses. All due respect to Modacam as I know they put out some of the best if not the best rimfire custom rifles but the modification makes me uneasy. Looking at an unmodified CZ firing pin the entire face is flat. The benefit of this is that when dry-fired the entire face of the firing pin strikes the rear face of the breach. Therefore, when you dry-fire you do not peen the edge of the chamber and create the dreaded burr and ruin the chamber which is the cause of the rule of not dry firing rimfires. If you look at the modification design that is in the video and that Modacam uses you will see that if you were to dry-fire with that firing pin design the only part of the breech that would be contacted is the edge of the chamber and could potentially cause damage. I like to leave the fat part of the firing pin up top untouched so that if the gun is dry-fired it will contact the back of the breechface and prevent the firing pin for peening the chamber mouth. I know when shooting I occasionally lose count of the rounds I fire and accidentally dry-fire on an empty chamber. Just removing metal on the thin part of the CZ firing pin between the tip that you want to contact the round just inside of the rim edge and the part where it gets fat gives you the same bit of improvement on ignition while still maintaining a dry-fire safe firing pin. Just my thoughts on CZ firing pins. But I’m open to learning more if anyone has a explanation for me being incorrect.

I noticed on my CZ 457 that when you rotate the bolt handle and release the tension on the firing pin, it comes to a stop with the front face of the pin being flush, or slightly behind, the bolt face. So, there appears to be a mechanical stop farther back that prevents forward movement of the firing pin. In theory, this would prevent the face of the modified pin from coming in contact with the edge of the chamber or breech face. However, if this mechanical stop begins to change/deform with repeated dry fires, it could cause the face of the pin to actually come in contact with the breech face. If you're interested, check out my post in the CZ-BRNO forum on Rimfire Central titled, "Dryfire-safe firing pin".

Didn’t think it was going to make that much difference. Cool review. Which one did you put in or did you just modified it yourself. I looked it up to see what was changed. Never thought about not hitting the rim. Thought that was where the primer was, guess not. I’ll have to look at my 10/22 and my model 41 and see how they strike the round. Congrats, even after all these years you still find cool stuff to show.

@@PursuitofAccuracy any chance you know why they modify it so it doesn’t touch the rim since that’s where the primer is? Can’t figure out how that makes any sense. Tried looking it up but found no explanations in the forums just the different shapes used.

Interesting. The difference in the results seem quite slight to me. What is the factor that shows the modified pin to be bettter? Lower SD? Higher BC?

Look on last 5 shots on stock firing pin. Lowest speed went from 1095 to 1088 and that’s made the difference in my opinion. Before SD was 5.05 better than modified FP. Unfortunately we can’t see last 5 shots true speed on chrono at lest I didn’t see it.

Been running the YoDave extra power firing pin spring since Day 1 on my MTR. Since I’ve never run a match with factory spring, I can’t compare directly… But I can’t help but wonder if it’s why my otherwise factory class MTR shoots better than most, it’s also not very picky about ammo FWIW.
