On the isthmus of two lakes, a pre-Slavic wooden castle was built, the trace of which remains on the highest hill below the town. In 1312 the sons of the voivode of Kalisz sold Człuchów to the Teutonic Knights, who started to build a defensive fortress on the inaccessible Kujawy peninsula. Soon they also decided to locate the town (Grand Master Henry Dausemer granted the town rights in 1348).
The main brick building of Człuchów was the castle. A small settlement near the castle, inhabited by Kashubians and German colonists, was established in the castle yard. Today it is considered that it was the nucleus of the town.
In the times of the First Republic of Poland, the town served as an administrative centre under whose administration the whole south-western part of Royal Prussia was governed. In comparison to other towns of the then Republic of Poland, Człuchów belonged to small towns.
At the end of January 1945, Soviet troops entered the district borders, but the town was not conquered until 27 February 1945. About 60% of the buildings in Człuchów were destroyed.
In Człuchów, thanks to many interesting corners, historical buildings and specific architecture, one can discover the pages of Polish history. The most perfect example of this is the medieval remains of the castle with its 46-metre octagonal castle tower, chapel and ruins of the walls. Another valuable monument is the Baroque St. Jacob's Church, founded in 1644-47 by starosta Jakub Wejher.
