Roudnice nad Labem is a town on the Elbe River's left bank in the Litoměřice district. According to statistical data, approximately 13 thousand inhabitants live permanently on the town's territory. Roudnice covers an area of 16.67 km² and includes the village of Podlusky. The town's historic core and surrounding buildings are protected as an urban conservation area.
An ore spring called Rudník or Rúdnice under the Augustinian monastery gave the name to the whole town. It is one of the oldest Czech towns; the original name, Rúdník or Rúdnica, derived from the spring. The first written records of Roudnice nad Labem date back to a relatively late period, from 1167 to 1176, and it was granted town rights as early as the 12th century. At the end of the 12th century, a stone Romanesque castle was built here, the second secular building in Bohemia. The castle's construction in this strategically important location for the twelfth century was started by Henry the Bretislav, nephew of King Vladislav I, the Bishop of Prague, and later appointed by the Emperor as the ruler of the Bohemian Principality. This corresponds to the year 1189/90, which was obtained dendrochronologically from the remains of the wood of the cross vaults on the ground floor of the Romanesque part. The original Romanesque castle had a rectangular plan and seven bastions.
Construction continued in the 13th and 14th centuries, with Bishop Jan IV of Dražice (c. 1280-1343) building the third oldest stone bridge in Bohemia and the first across the Elbe between 1333 and 1340. Emperor Charles IV also stayed at the castle; on his orders, the tribune of the Roman uprising, Cola di Rienzo, was interned there. At the end of the 14th century, the New Town of Roudnice (today, Jan of Dražice Square and Hus Square) was built and surrounded by walls with the old town. In the 15th century, the city was conquered and sacked several times by the Hussites (1421 Jan Žižka, 1425 Jan Roháč of Dubá, 1428 Václav Carda of Petrovice).
After the Hussite wars, the town and the castle changed hands several times (1431 Jan Smiřický, 1453 Zdeněk Konopišťský of Šternberk, from 1467 Roudnice was a royal town. In 1577, it was acquired by William of Rožmberk, who began the reconstruction and expansion of Roudnice Castle and had his alchemy workshops there. Jakub Krčín, who worked here during his reign, also contributed to the town's flourishing. After Wilhelm's death, his estate was acquired by his last wife, Polyxena of Pernštejn, who married Zdeněk Vojtěch Popel of Lobkowice in 1603. He continued to expand and improve the Roudnice estate.
The Baroque reconstruction of the castle was designed by the leading architects of the time, Pietro de Colombo, Francesco Caratti, Carlo Orsolini and Carlo Lurago. During the Thirty Years' War, the town was burnt and destroyed by Swedish troops in 1634 and 1639. The construction of the castle was completed in 1684, during the reign of Wenceslaus Eusebius of Lobkowitz, by the builder Antonio della Porta. Václav Eusebius also established Roudnice as the main and indivisible family property (the so-called fideikomis), which was valid until 1945.
In the 19th century, Roudnice became the industrial and economic centre of Podřipsko, which was supported by several large engineering factories (also from 1920 "BEKAR", Bratři Klementové, a factory for baby carriages, wicker baskets and metal goods) and the railway. In 1910, a new iron bridge over the Elbe River was built on the original, demolished Gothic bridge site. In. In 1945, the castle was nationalized, and its valuable depository (especially the library and the Lobkowicz Picture Gallery) was destroyed or placed in other castles or museums in the Czech Republic. From 1957 to 2008, the castle was the seat of the Vít Nejedlý Military Music School. The castle was opened to the public in 2012. The former castle riding hall houses the Gallery of Modern Art of the 19th and 20th centuries; one of the most valuable exhibited artists is Antonín Slavíček.
