Anyone else here because they’re genuinely interested in learning about their culture in order to properly celebrate their passed loved ones? 🙋‍♀️

Yup. Assimilation sucks. My grandparents refused to teach the family anything about our own culture because they were taught that they had to fit in to survive. Have to learn everything from scratch on my own now.

For those of you who are here for Spanish class, the lady got a few things wrong. 1) Marigolds are not just "Flowers of the dead". Marigolds are known for being natural pesticides, many people plant them around their crops, not only to keep away bugs and anything that might be harmful to their food but also because they are amazing at attracting pollinators for the crops. Because of this, it is believed that putting marigolds on your ofrenda will ward away any bad spirits or negative feelings while attracting your loved ones to your altar. 2) You don't cut the tissue paper and decorate the ofrenda just to make it look nice and to honor Jesus Christ and your loved ones (although that is a part of it). It is believed that because you have put so much of your energy, money, and time into decorating your ofrenda and your loved one's grave, all that energy you put into it will help create a doorway at your ofrenda to allow your loved ones to cross from the spirit world into the land of the living. Most (not all, because some don't believe in this part and believe you must create a trail of marigolds leading from your loved one's grave to your ofrenda in order for them to find their way to you) ofrendas have some sort of arch or rectangular frame of marigolds in the back of it, and this is because it is believed that since the marigolds attract your loved ones, putting them in that shape will channel all the energy you put into the ofrenda into a sort of spiritual doorway for your loved one to come into the land of the living. 3) (She didn't explicitly SAY this, but I don't think she really made it clear enough) Dia de los muertos is NOT a time to mourn your lost loved ones. It is meant to celebrate the memories you made with them or the legacy they left and the fact that they were alive, as well as a time to appreciate the people you love that are still with you. It is a time to acknowledge that they were here, and they were and still are a *person,* who could think and feel and smile and laugh and cry and do all of these amazing things while thinking about how lucky you are that you get the privilege of being able to do the same.

So could you use fake marigolds? Idk where on earth I would get 4 miles of marigold. Or could I use candles? I could get 4 miles of candles. Thanks for you're explanation. Although I am not Mexican my husband is and wanted to celebrate day of the dead. I had no idea how to now I know a tiny little bit. He doesn't know much he moved to the US when he was 7 and his family didn't celebrate it after coming to the states. The marigolds will be the hardest part thats a ton of flowers.

Sam da Silva I teach my students about many different perspectives in my classroom and more importantly I teach them to research and think critically about all sides of the story. I want them to use information to think for themselves and learn to become educated individuals in our society. It isn’t my job to tell them what to think, but rather how to continually find all perspectives and to develop their own thoughts.

Also the spanish did not 'conquer' Mexico.…Let’s call it what it is. It was an invasion. It was a war. It was colonization. That word conquest implies an extermination of a culture over another and that's not what happened.

NO NOT QUITE! The Spanish used the opportunity to empty their jails of European undesirables. They brought with them diseases unknown in the new world. Measels. influenza and typhoid were unleashed. This more than anything else wiped out the indigenous peoples on a scale not seen since the modern plague of pandemics in Mexico.

It's told to us in the beginning that it's not the Mexican version of Halloween but then explain that when the Spanish came, they merged the Aztec culture with the Catholic days of All Saints and All Souls, Halloween is literally ALL HALLOWS EVE or the Eve of All SAINTS

I don’t see it as a merge of cultures actually. The indigenous populations had to disguise their pagan traditions so they had started doing it when the all saints celebrations happen. It was due to persecution and a cultural genocide. I don’t think a meshing of cultures is the term to best describe Dia De los muertos. Because the foundation, important part is an indigenous one. We’re just people who happen to be Catholics honoring an indigenous tradition.
@BrianTerrill
@BrianTerrill 8 ай бұрын
@micmacuno you do realize that the Conquitadires you claim were committing genocide were the ones who brought you Catholicism, right? The reality is the Aztecs were pretty brutal towards their subjects before the Spanish arrived in Mexico Propaganda, as opposed to real history, likes to paint all pre-Columbian native Americans as one large nation of peace nicks with no immunity to diseases of the outside world, etc

The origins of this Christian holiday is the 4th century, during the persecution of Christians by the Emperor Diocletian since, by causing many deaths, it was impossible to celebrate a commemoration in the name of each one of them, so it was decided to establish one day, to honor the Catholic martyrs.

So, no seamos así. Defendamos nuestra cultura frente a personas que la atacan... no contra personas que intentan dar a conocerle a los demás que México es la chingonería. And, I speak English too but I though it would be sound better these in Spanish.

You have been taught that there is no salvation outside the Roman Catholic Church, but the reality is that salvation does not come by a church, but only comes by God’s grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone, apart from any of our own works. “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast” - Ephesians 2:8-9 You have been taught that church tradition and words of clergy matter just as much, if not more, than what the Bible teaches, but the reality is the Bible is sufficient for all doctrine and instruction. “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.” - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 You have been taught that Mary and the saints can mediate on your behalf before God the Father, but the reality is that Jesus Christ, God the Son, is your only mediator before God the Father. “For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” - 1 Timothy 2:5 You have been tricked into placing your hope of eternal salvation into a piece of bread and cup of wine that the priest claims transforms into Christ’s flesh, but the reality is Christ shed his blood only once to pay the forgiveness for all your sins forever. “And every priest standeth daily ministering and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins: But this man (Jesus Christ), after he had offered one sacrifice for sins for ever, sat down on the right hand of God” - Hebrews 10:11-12 You have been taught that after death most people go to purgatory for a final cleansing before they’re worthy of Heaven, but the reality is that the blood of Jesus washes away all sin and purgatory does not exist - if you place your trust in this you will go to Heaven by Jesus’ righteousness, but if you place your trust in the church, water baptism, idols, or anything else, you will go to Hell. “And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of your flesh, hath he quickened together with him, having forgiven you all trespasses” - Colossians 2:13 “Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.” - Romans 3:24-26 I pray you consider what God’s word says. God alone justifies a repentant sinner when the sinner places their trust in Jesus Christ, and Jesus Christ alone. Do not let some church or false teacher lead you to Hell. “But as many as received him (Jesus Christ), to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.” - John 1:12-13

@RealBobEvans
@RealBobEvans Жыл бұрын
@@markescartin1915 I speak the true from God's word out of love for you my friend. In regards to día de los muertos, the entire day is satanic. That's just the truth, doesn't matter if it's part of culture or tradition or whatever. "But he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition?" - Matthew 15:3 "There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. For all that do these things are an abomination unto the Lord: and because of these abominations the Lord thy God doth drive them out from before thee." - Deuteronomy 18:10-12 Look into the history of how the Roman Catholic church tried to Christianize these demonic, pagan holidays like día de los muertos and halloween. But at thier core, they are still demonic, pagan holidays that Christians should have no part in. The Roman Catholic church is lying to billions of people, they incorrectly teach the Bible, and souls are being damned to Hell daily because of the deception. My friend, ye must be born again. "Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God." - John 3:3
