In this episode of ‘Political Kisse’, the Editor of ‘The Lallantop’ Saurabh Dwivedi talks about the life-journey of the former President of India Giani Zail Singh and his relation with Indira Gandhi. Earlier, Zail Singh worked as a politician with the Indian National Congress Party, and held several ministerial posts including Home Minister, in the Union Cabinet. Zail Singh was also elected as a Congress Chief Minister of Punjab in the year 1972.
Giani Zail Singh served as the seventh President of India from 1982 to 1987 which was marked by Operation Blue Star, the assassination of Indira Gandhi, and the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. Unfortunately, Giani Zail Singh met with an accident and died of injuries in 1994. He also served as the Secretary-General of the Non-Aligned Movement from 1983 to 1986.

All that which happened in 84 was the saddest episode in Indian history. I was just 4 years old but still i remember the pain, trauma n fear. My father was in IAF and we have seen how our sikh friends and neighbours were afraid still staying in defwnce area under high security and everyone was helping them with extended hands. It was the most unfaithful day. We don't want history to repeat itself with any community and religion. We all must stay with love and peace.

SaurabhJi....Thanks for taking us to history of 1980's. I was a child and recall the moment. Killing of Indira Ji and anti Sink Riots, both were unfortunate moments of history. Political ruling class didn't live up to expectation and innocents were killed.

Just to correct you this pocket veto was used because it's a very very critical bill that was passed by Rajiv gandhi government (it gives right to open your letter n read the content written personally to someone from someone). If this bill would have been passed then there would have been no privacy. This bill was target mainly for punjab in order to stop the violence activity ( as letter was the main mode of communication among militants). So our respected President used his pocket veto to maintain our privacy. As per Indian Constitution if our president send the bill back to Lowe house suggesting some amendment then no matter the amendment were made or not President has to sign the bill and implement it as a Law. In my opinion it was the best move. Thank you.
