Riding one handed is much deeper than just rein direction. The horse understands best when the rider uses his body to communicate clearly to the horse what they want them to do with the least amount of effort.
My Clear Mental Picture:
I want the horse's shoulders to go left, right or straight at my suggestion. It's important that the horse look in the direction of travel, and that the horse is engaged behind.
You will see here step by step play by play when to do what and how to accomplish your clear mental picture- which again is:
The horse looking in way of travel, engaged behind.

Loved the tip about not reverting back to a direct rein if the horse goes in a direction you don't want her to go. That's a hard instinct to fight!

I noticed that you have what looks to be a fairly snug rope noseband on this horse. Is that what she usually wears or is it just to keep her from gaping her mouth as she learns to wear the leverage bit.

My horse is still pulling on my hands at times. Should I wait before I make the transition? What leverage bit do you recommend for transitioning out of a snaffle? I really appreciate how you describe your body position and what it communicates to your horse.

@@feliciadepierro6077 when a horse pulls on my hand I use more drive with my legs to get them to get off of the bridle

@@cappelhorsetrainingandshoeing he usually does this when we are out on the trails and he is not paying attention to where I’m telling him where we are going. I do drive him with my legs to get him to pay attention to me and what I’m asking, but I really feel like I have to tug on him to get him in the direction I want. Not always but occasionally still happening. He is coming along great and has overcome a lot of issues considering he was not broke to ride until he was 9, he is now 11.

@@feliciadepierro6077 some times when there is a lack of understanding or willingness you might have to pull harder and kick harder to give him a reason to try harder to come off of the bit .
