Couple things about this spell. 1) The human skeleton weights only about 15 kg. You could carry a couple of those with you wherever you go. If you "tetris" it properly, you could even fit them in a chest so that the townspeople don't freak out, 2) If you lock that chest, you could pre-animate your skeletons that you carry with you. It gives you a contingency plan if you fail to be present at the right time of the day to use a spell slot to keep control of your 4 skeletons, as they will still be contained. 3) No one said you _had_ to use a spell slot to keep control of 4 skeletons. Once your box is full, you very well could just start working on another box of skeletons and leave the now neutral-evil-uncontrollable skeletons in the box. Just because you don't control them doesn't mean they can't be an asset in a fight or act of heinous terrorism. That way, no one will think of giving you reasons to commit heinous acts of terrorism. 4) It can take longer than you would think to bump into 12 full sets of human bones. Get started early. Sure, your party might think you're a little weird for using invisible servant to scratch and quicklime the flesh off every bandit that pisses off your barbarian, but as soon as you hit level 5, you'll be ready. 5) No other spell in the game gives you 4 actions per turn-per-spell-slot-for-24-hours without requiring concentration. It literally is broken. It's like they didn't care to balance the spell at all. It just breaks the action economy. 6) A wand of magic missile does not require a spellcaster level to use. If you can make them or can buy as many of them as you want, every skeleton can deal 3d4+3 per turn. At level 5, that's 36d4+36 (average 126) per turn for a bonus action that doesn't take your concentration. It always hits. There's no saves. 7) Skeletons can wear robes, gloves and masks, even armor if needed. If you use minor illusion, you can make your voice sound like it's coming out of one of them. That way, your enemy takes 126 damage per round not-counting your own actions, while guessing which mage to attack. 8) Skeletons don't need to eat, sleep, drink, or even breathe. They don't require light to perform their task, and don't get sunburned either. They have an int. of 6 and can perform some basic tasks if ordered to. They don't require a wage and don't unionize. Whilst it takes a bonus action to give an instruction, they can all follow a different one. If you set them on a simple task like working looms, mining, or laboring the ground, you can make products that are so abundant and so far below market averages that you can crash any local economy in a matter of months. Have fun.

Ah I remember the good old days in 2nd edition when there was basically no limits to what you could raise. Not to mention evil priest could just "Control undead" at will to gain more and more. Yes you could raise entire countries of people into your unending zombie/skeleton army. You haven't lived until you taken down a dragon with something like 4000 skeletons.

I want more backstory on the McGenk brothers. Skenk was raised by lizardfolk, right? Was his brother also raised by them, or were they raised separately and they didn't know of each other?

I had some fun with a necromancer once. Then for some reason we started to exclusivly fight enemies that either don't leave behind corpses or cannot be reanimated.

Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, page 71, retcons this. The "Undying Servitude" invocation allows a level 5+ warlock to cast..... you guessed it.... Animate Dead!

This one spell has influenced more creativity and brainstorming from me then any other. There's just something special about planning world domination 1 unknowing servant at a time I love.

One important thing to mention: a 14th level necromancer can attempt to assert control over undead creatures PERMANENTLY, whether it be your undead or someone else’s. Keep that in mind when building your army

Back in the day (3.5) the spell wasn't limited to humanoid OR medium, instead being limited entirely by HD. This made for some absolutely hilarious abuse, like the armor-plated skeletal mammoth we ran around with. It had a seat in the ribcage that the necromancer rode in as a "pilot", an animated ballista on top and basically operated as a fantasy equivalent to a Star Wars assault walker :P.

One of my character ideas is a Divine Soul Sorcerer that is NG and animates the dead to help people. Though she doesn't see her undead creations as minions or throw-away assets. She sees them as her children. Eventually, with DM approval, she'd gain a bit of a cult following and her divine soul would begin to grow seeing as it is technically a mote of a divine spark. After that she begins the path to becoming a demigod.

"You can take a few paths to this spell" just makes me think of a bard who takes the spell through magical secrets and just goes around playing spooky scary skeletons on a horn with an entourage of undead dancing behind him

The intro to this spell is just an absolute masterpiece, the music, brutal animation, and how it all tied back into the spell. Just perfect, I come back to watch this video every month or so, it's just amazing.

My favorite mailing/telecommunications system in a fantasy world: a bunch of underground tunnels full of skeletons ready to peasant railgun your packages/messages anywhere in like, an hour, logistically since they'd have to be brought into and out of mail lines and couried the rest of the distance but distinctly alive people.

Animate dead and create undead are some of my favorite spells, my friend when he DMs let’s me cast it as a ritual, so whenever I want to play a necromancer, I’m usually an elf. Because of this, I get 4 hours of rest then I get 4 hours of ritual casting create undead, so I get 24 undead. But because of the necromancer Wizard subclass, I get 48! Undead army, here I come

Oh man, I've had the song "Tempted" in my head for the last day and I couldn't figure out what song it was or where I had heard it. I just knew it was from something that I had watched a few times due to how much I liked it. Spent almost an hour looking up the wrong lyrics and finally found it after googling " "I was certain" lyrics " and then eventually remembered my favourite animated spellbook video.
