I'm using a Changeling Bard with the College of Glamour and it's been pretty fantastic. I already got a boost to my Deception and Persuasion and it just got crazier past that.

I'm late as well, only difference is I'm playing a college of creation bard. He's an ex thief/con artist with a high deception and insight and hoo boy is my boy good at bamboozling. On the rare occasion he dabbles back into a con his targets are usually assholes. He fancies himself a karmic trickster, but when he isn't up to shenanigans he's an aspiring songwriter/playwright.

I made a changeling bard. in the 2nd session, I sold pocket lint for a few hundred gold and I have never been more proud of one of my characters

I agree with all your top 3 picks, but I would say my number 1 would be Changeling. Advantage on deception checks to pass yourself off as another person, and general buffs to your charisma checks make them ideal for such a face role. They also can use their Unsettling Visage in combat to throw off enemies, which ties into a bard's debuff/support role. Half-Elf is definitely the best 2nd choice, because in addition to the +2 charisma AND the 2 floating +1's you get the additional 2 proficiencies to add to your skill-monkey belt. Wonderful stuff. Over all the half elf is more versatile no matter what subclass you want. Changeling is a specific type of bard in my opinion. Many bards aren't going to be interested in being master deceivers. Nerdarchist Dave

For my first bard I went with a Tabaxi amnesiac whose memories were stolen by the fey. I love the tabaxi quirks and how they fit into her background. She’s a highly skilled performer with no memory of the first twenty years of her life. But she seeks out knowledge everywhere she goes and sometimes an interesting anecdote or tidbit of lore will return one of her stolen memories. At beginning of the campaign, all she knows is that at some time in her past she spent time with the fey.

I mean, humans and half-elves kinda make the best once you add in the prodigy feat (I mean, half-orc could take it too, but they don't have those floating +1s). Prodigy is so good, and having even more skills and expertise makes it great. I would almost instantly say half-elf is #1 if it weren't for human's lvl 1 feat.

One answer: Deekin. The greatest bard of all time. And Kobold not mentioned even once. SMH. (there are some more combat variants of bard which would fit a kobold quite well, and the natural outlook of people upon kobolds as comedic creatures would lend to a Jester type of bard)

Half elf is best period. Not only a bump to charisma, but the floating 1s. On top of that two free skills. Half can be whatever kinda bard you wanna be. Just choose half elf

same can be said of Tiefling. +2 charisma and every other stat is available for a +1 depending on your variant

I despise elves and half-elves, but half-elf is SO good for nearly any build. Plus, that charisma bump lets you dip into a lot of great classes for shenanigans. Half-elf for the win. (I still hate them.)

honestly i had a Verdan bard and that great in and out of combat it has 1 to cons and 2 to charisma so stat wise it was great for my dex bard, with it already having Persuasion in the begining and a free third language he was great at getting information or simple getting people to do what he needed, not to mention in combat he has Telepathic Insight which add to his wisdom and charisma saves helped out quite a bit

Never really cared for Bards tbh. I did play a Whisper/Mastermind Changeling but he's probably off somewhere manipulating information so I can't find him. As for Half elf I actually used the stereotype of half Elves being mostly Bards and lied that she was when she was actually a Rogue with the Entertainer Background so sneaking into parties and robbing the host blind was her thing. As for the tier list it's 3.Human,2.Half Elf,and 1. Changeling and if you want to contest what I said make a Insight roll vs 42 in Deception and 40 in Persuasion.

@@varasatoshi3961 Impossible as in there is no way I could get them that high or impossible as in there is no way you can tell if this person is lying or not? Cause Zaval has expertise in Deception plus the bonuses from Bard and Rogue plus Bardic Inspiration plus High Rolls. I mean one time I managed to roll perfect enough while he was disguised and got 52.

Stripey Bag the max you could get is +17 with expertise. You can't double expertise them. Jack of all trades only applies to skills you aren't proficient in, and bardic inspiration only goes up to a d12... and you can't inspire yourself.

I'm seriously debating on taking a bard for my next character. I was thinking about College of Whispers and not doing the typical half-elf,but it's still hard to pick another race though since the half-elf is so amazing as a bard.

100% agree with half epf for mechanics but thanks to Tome of Foes I currently have a recurring NPC College of Whispers bard who is a Glasya variant Tiefling which just feels perfect for flavor

I've never played DND before. But I'm getting into it and making Ng a character. It's trying to be a Aasimar Bard subclass College of lore. DND is confusing me lol. Sometimes I get it and then a small piece of info throws everything off and confused me again. It's a process.

I highly recommend just reading the Players Handbook properly from cover to cover. Some people go years without doing this, it's wild to me. Dungeon Masters Guide too if you're feeling it.

Hey Nerdarchy! I love all of these races you chose, but i couldn’t stop thinking about this: a copper dragonborn bard. Since the copper dragons are quite the tricksters and the entertainers (along with the stat increase) they would fit quite well as your typical entertainer bard! What do you think?

Dragonborn are a decent choice for a bard. I just find their racial features underwhelming compared to other races. One of the reasons we let them use their breath weapon as a bonus action. Nerdarchist Dave

No I disagree kobolds are the best race for bards. Cower grovel and beg+bardic inspiration=a game changer not only that but the whole cowardly quirk would be nice as well as pack tactics for something like a sword bard a lore bard

Issue with the obscure races is that race itself is a barrier/hindrance to social interactions. While any race might have issues in specific campaigns, most campaign settings are human-based. They are allowed in the majority of places and typically don't have any great negatives with dealing with most races. As soon as you get into demi-humans, you have social issues right off the bat against many races. Orcs or goblins probably wan't talking to an elf or even half-half. A gnome typically can't disguise themselves to get into an bandit encampment.

Have you considered doing a video on unusual optimised characters? You usually associate a wood elf with a ranger or druid. However they can make decent clerics too. Or halflings being bards maybe sorcerers too but a halfling warlock would be kinda weird. You know what I'm getting at?

I am playing a Changeling lore Bard. Our dungeon master the PC to pick background. So I chose the criminal background. I'm at level 6 and the character is OP as. It was one of those better sweet things the DM was super excited I was playing a Bard and now he's super annoyed at times to.

While bards are classically thought of being the minstrel, they can also quite easily be orators, dancers, tumblers, or even mimes- if you want to get creative. You could even spin a bard as an evangelical priest who rouses allies with cries of the glory of their god and promises fiery wrath to their foes. Even if you can't sing, maybe just go for it and have fun.
