Since it makes more sense to prepare these in advance, it would make a lot of sense if wizards sold campaign-specific clings packs. A pack with every cling you'll need to run a specific module that they've published. I would buy the shit out of those.

apart from the price tag, i would say its a great box. And the issue with peeling of the stickers, is not a big issue, you dont have to. Place one sticker on each side, and your 40 standard tokens becomes 80 tokens. It feels like the video needed to find issues, just becouse off. What i did, was that i created my own tokens for creatures, printed them out. cut them out, glued them to mdf bases 25 mm, 50 mm and larger. The total cost of printing, buyin bases, glue, varnish was close to the price of this box, but then i have not counted for the hours it took to make them into tokens. So if i knew then what i know now, i would have spent the money on a kit like this instead. Only issue is the price tag, or not. So to any one starting out, this is a great way to go, unless you want to buy miniatures instead, or don't want to do what i did, create you own creature/monster tokens. And you only need to remove the stickers, when you need to. There is no reason for removing them after a session or many sessions, so buy the box, open the box, and stick the most common stickers for your adventure/campaign on the bases, and leave them on, untill you need a base for some other creature.

They should just make sets of Weighted tokens with images already on them. The goblin war band. Kobold guards. Hobgoblin patrol. Dragon. Bullette.

@@BasicLiches I dont understand why WoTC reuse so much artwork. Dont they have any full time artists working for them. I'd have them constantly doing new artwork for stuff. If players can afford to get artwork of their characters done why cant a massive company like that get a decent amount of new monster artwork.

I often use Pathfinder pawns, because they're very cheap. And unlike flat tokens, you can see them further away. And I do put them in pocketed pages inside of folders, so I can find what I want easily.

Yeah i use the paw tokens and print out my works, way cheaper and the best option out there imo. Hopefully wizard of the coast takes the approach to make similar product., for sure the 2D products are not far off and better than the campaign case.

Pawns for the win IMO. They are actually numbered as well so if you leave them in their sheets they are pretty easy to find so you move sorting time to the back end putting them away in the right spots.

Thanks for honesty, it means A LOT for making decision on buying (or not) stuff like this. Personally, I use almost all solutions I can obtain, depending on situation. I use minis whenever possible (I do prefer to paint them myself, but I have Wizkids, Nolzurs, Archon, GW, other boardgames...), I made standees for one campaign (including player characters, but mostly because of shitload of goblins) by printing them and gluing them to cardboard disks, and when I don't have mini or standee I use tokens. Even dice as tokens. No embarrassment there. I also either use plastic terrain (Archon), or homemade terrain and objects, or use some battle mats (Loke), or simply draw maps on paper or on dry-erase folders with grid printed on paper inside. Whatever seems to work at the moment. My DM friends also use digital platforms (roll20), and one of them has Pathfinder standees (those really work like a charm, also for both PCs and NPCs). Our strength lies in the descriptions and storytelling and acting... All the other things are there to make some things easier (or if not, than to make our time fun and fulfilling in making those stuff).

Agree with you 100%. It's all situational and it all works. We've been at tables where coins or skittles were skeletons. We've seen a Brock Lesner mini be used as a vampire, and little rubber monkeys as kobolds. If the DM is really on point with the descriptions and combat narrations it doesn't matter what kind of token is representing the monsters. Using theater of the mind for combat really helps a DM level up that particular skill. Totally agree on your final point too. This stuff is all cool and using different options, making your own etc... is all part of the DnD experience. Thanks so much for the comment acidum984!

Campaign modules, or Bestiary token clings would be great. I at least expect the Monster Manual tokens but reckon this is marketed towards the Starter/Essential Set campaigns based on the tokens present.

This would be a nice way to get artwork that's more styled to the adventure like curse of strahd or spelljammer that would be very costly to have a bunch of minis for each setting.

I use flattened marbles. 12 colors for goblin blue, goblin red, etc. They carry in a cloth bag the size of a fist and 1/2 under $10 total. Some black river rocks with stickers on them to differentiate for bigger creatures and bosses. $3 total getting both at the Dollar Tree. I highly recommend. On a side note: get stickers your group knows. I'm the only female and I originally bought disney princess stickers. Me "are you attacking sleeping beauty or snow white?" My player, "I don't know which one is which" 😂

Repost: spent $20 on three hole punchers off Amazon. A 1 inch, 2 inch, and 3 inch one. I then spent $45 on some bases from Bones/Reaper miniatures. Added up to over 100 of them with a variety of sizes. For another $5, I got the glue for it. I then spent $0 on MTG cards that were donated commons, uncommons, and tokens from the game to provide me with images for them. So for the $70 I spent, I got myself prepped for everything I could ever need that this box provided. And the best part is that I don't have to fight taking off stickers and putting them back on.

(1) they missed the boat by not selling a $15 packet of stickers with every mob you would need for a published adventure (all goblins numbered of course!) (2) there's a lot of wasted space in the box (3) thanks for showing how few monsters were actually in there!

The amount of monsters provided is laughable. We tried using these for the Dragons of Stormwreck Isle adventure, and we're shocked that we didn't have enough of some monsters (had to use the included numbers). And some popular monsters aren't even in included. If they don't provide more monsters this thing is a total waste!

@@BasicLiches I think the best option would be to buy the Pathfinder PDFs and print the pages you need with as many copies as you need. $40-60 and printing costs and you have pretty much endless cardstock minis.

I literally have wooden blocks that I use. Red, Blue, Green and Yellow ones, cut to size. Painted in the color, and then numbered. I have 10 of each color for the 1 square ones, 4 of each color for the 2 squares, and then one of each color for 3 and 4 squares. Really really that simple. I let my narration describe the monsters. If it is something difficult to describe (like an abberation or something weird) I might print out a picture that I will just toss onto the battlemap as I describe. the D&D 5e box you showed is tempting, solely for the weighted disks. Slap just the numbers on them (if there are enough?) and then never change them out. The cost though isn't worth it.

The monster stat cards are nice, so if you are doing theatre of the mind fighting or using generic tokens you can show the players the picture of the creature. And then you have all the stats and such in hand, much easier than having the monster manual open

We have those monster cards and they're a nice little time saver. For quick skirmishes and battles we tend to do theater of the mind. Having those monster cards handy always helps. Much faster and you don't have to worry about finding the correct mini or token!

If you prep before the game you could put them in a bag or pocket of your backpack or sling them in the terrain case which probablyhas lots of spare room and cardboard space fillers too. Which makes the case itself just a really large binder in your home den.

Campaign case looks really cool. You could use a small strip of paper under the vinyl every time you apply it to aid in the reapplication process.

If you are interested in picking this up Stephen P, we HIGHLY recommend using a tool to peel the vinyl clings off. We also figured out that you shouldn't pick at the edge, but pinch opposite sides of the vinyl cling to remove it from the disk.

I'm just curious what you were expecting for numbering or marking monsters. You were upset about having the numbers to add, but had no suggestions for something better, until the comparisons later in the video. My suggestion to easily remove the clings is to leave an edge of the cling slightly hanging over the edge of the token so you have a lip to grab onto. Also, there wasn't much discussion about the ways the different colors could be used in different ways. I have used these a few times and really enjoy them so far. Hopefully they will release sheets of clings in the future. Thanks for the video!

Hi John - Regarding the numbers...After we got done filming we figured that the easiest solution was to use the different colored tokens instead of the numbers. As long as you don't have more than 4 creatures in a mob it's the cleanest way to differentiate between same monster types. Using a different colored token could also indicate a particular strong monster of the same type. Good call on letting the clings hang slightly over the edge. That would certainly make them easier to remove. Glad you're getting enjoyment out of the product. We'd have to image that more creature clings will be released in the future to support this product. Otherwise, it will be a limited selection of monsters. Thanks for the informative and helpful comment! We look forward to seeing you in the comment section in the future!

Decades ago, I bought all the sets of Cardboard Heroes from Steve Jackson Games that I store flat in my TSR RPGA soft cases, and have been using them in my away games. They were meant to be used folded as cardboard triangles, but they were too light to stand unless the surface was level (or against incidental breezes from fans or open windows), but plastic stands from another wargame solved the problem (and added a weighted base to keep them from falling or being easily blown over). Miniatures were a huge money & time drain, requiring painting, whereas CB Heroes enabled me to have a massive variety of full color (flat 2-sided) miniatures that were highly portable.

Love it! There are so many affordable ways to play the game without spending a fortune on minis or dwarven forge terrain. We even like running combats in theater of the mind just so we don't have to worry about finding minis etc... Thanks for sharing your token solution with us. It sure seems like to me at least for smaller creatures just printing up a bunch of circular monster graphics and sticking them to quarters would be way more economical. For larger stuff you could probably make a trip to the hardware store and find some appropriate sized washers and do the same exact thing. You couldn't change them on the fly sure. But it seems like these aren't really well suited to changing them on the fly.

I laughed so hard when you read the instructions for assembly after you broke the huge stand. Those 2d acrylics were prettier than pawns, but pawns are a really great product (and wasn't it discontinued?) This is another great product review (I watched the terrain review first) with a keen eye for the practical concerns of the average GM, as well as cost effectiveness. You do the community a great service with this!

I love the Pawns and own all the sets plus, they rarely get used though due to all the mini's I have. They are a fantastic product that got cancelled for no given reason. Arcknight makes good plastic flats, basically pawns but clear plastic with artwork.

I've been using pinto beans and pennies as monsters for 30 years 👍 All those years of saving got me 1 Gargantuan Tiamat. It doesn't matter if I never use the Tiamat figure, beans and pennies will forever rule as the most flexible and fastest encounter setup. Go ahead and buy your $15 2d acrylics, I'll bring thousands upon thousands of beans in 1 bag for less than $5, and you'll never know what encounters I have planned ahead. For minis, all you need is 1 brick of Tyranny Of Dragons mini for $100 and that will be your best bet for actual minis for years, because it comes with kobold, goblins, orcs, bugbears, people, and dragons. If you are kids, and you are broke, beans and pennies will take you further along for more years than you can imagine.

Kobold Press has pawn sets like those Pathfinder Beastiary boxes for their "Tome of Beast" books. I don't think they come with the plastic stands, so you'd have to buy those separate, but if you already have them from a Pathfinder set, then it's a way to add even more image types to your collection. I recommend sorting them by monster type and environment and putting each such group in a clear plastic bag (lunch bags if you don't have extras from board games) for easy organization.

Great review, love the comparison with other products! Honestly since I make my own dry-erase tokens I am actually interested in this as this are way higher higher quality. Tho before buying I would love to see how much free space there would be in the case without using the plastic holder for the discs and if those discs are actually dry-erase as well or not?

Thanks RainbowPitt! The case is really just heavy-duty cardboard and it was filled with dividers and plastic holders that could be removed to give you more space. We did not attempt to write dry/wet erase on the discs, but from experience we can tell you that wet/dry erase ink typically pools up and wipes off from glossy plastic. The discs were designed for the clings to stick and not much else.

I think the 4e Monster Vault (both of them and red box) were better. The quality was good, it was easy to transport, and also had an adventure. plus, it was affordable at the moment of their release.

It's really odd that they didn't continue pumping out tokens for 5th Edition. Our only thought is that they didn't want any products out there that reminded folks of 4th Edition. 4e Monster Vault now costs over $150+ I got it when it was $20 and it is a great box set, I just can't recommend it now being as expensive as it is, but it has a ton of monsters on disc. Great box set, but the value of that product just blew up. 😑

Speaking of the board games behind you that you mentioned in passing, I think that is a very solid option. When I first started out as DM, I was using colored pawns like those from Clue for monsters. And I still use chits and tokens and minis and such from a variety of boardgames. Or you could buy the D&D board games for their minis, too.

But a $3.99 USD price point for reusable terrain tiles that support dry erase and tons of quality tokens. Buy 2!

I met a guy at my local game store who used a really big hole punch on his non essential magic cards. Basically every token was the same size, but it was a really cool way to repurpose stuff he already had

The weight can be nice to feel but makes it less portable, I just want cardboard coin-style pawns with stuff already printed. Other RPGs do it and Paizo does it for the standing cardboard tokens. This removable cligns seem overengineered to add a premium price tag.

We will also add that since owning this, the weighted tokens don't stay in their case at all. The minute you turn the case on it's side they come tumbling out of their spots. They really didn't think anything through with this product. Thanks so much for watching!

I think the biggest issue with these is the price. I got in on these while they were on sale for $20 for each (creature/terrain). But $40+ and especially the $65 msrp is just way too much for what you're getting IMHO.

I just bought some at the bargain store, $2.99 a piece 😂, yes you read that correctly, $2.99... the case looks good though, and I feel it's great for new players, especially at the basically free price, so i picked some up for myself for the hell of it and a set of characters and terrain for the school I work for since they're trying to start a club.

I love the pawns. I have them all sorted in a box from harbor freight. I even picked up the npc pawns for one shots or if someone forgets their mini.

I preordered mine but it hasn't gotten to EU just yet, but by the looks and sound of it it seems like a perfect thing for me. I always DM at my friends' place's and I don't have any minis already. I am still kinda sceptic about the stickers, but the worst case scenario the stickers will just rip or wear off and I will just use the discs as there's already 4 colours that I could use to destinguish my players and the type of enemies.

One commenter mentioned putting the clings towards the lip of the disc/token. They said that helped with getting them off easier. We hope that WotC at the very least supports this product with more creature clings. For folks that do plan on using it, have more variety will be a must at some point. My travel kit is pretty straightforward. For minis I just have a small puzzle box lined with foam I put the minis I need in. I can fit a whole adventure worth of minis in it and it takes up almost no space. Combined with my Loke flip books my travel kit is even smaller than this box. All of my 3d minis come from my big board game collection and I have some of the PF pawns that served me fantastic before I started buying board games

Your review of this item, and other like products, really helped settle me on my future purchases. This D&D set is just lacking, especially for the price point. My good friend and DM for the Pathfinder game I’m in has used the Pawns for some time, and they are an amazing product that I’ll probably get for my 5E games. Another older D&D product that came with mini’s similar to the Pathfinder Pawns was the Black Box starter set they made in the early 90s. It looks like a board game box and was made to work with the Rules Cyclopedia/Basic D&D. They’re paper though, and not as sturdy as the Pathfinder Pawns.

If you want an older DnD product that is genuinely great, search eBay for the 4th Edition Monster Vault. It's pricey...but it comes with TONS of monster tokens. The weighted discs seem nice. Especially since I use hole punched trading cards for creatures for planned encounters and generic tokens for random encounters.

I'd buy extra disks for pennies and never remove them. But I rather buy and paint minis. Off topic but I own a horde of the common enemies. I'm talking 20+ goblins, orcs, ogres etc

That's a solid solution. You could find regular, non-weighted, plastic tokens and the clings should attach to them just fine. We wish we had the time and patience to paint minis! Maybe we'll make a video showcasing some of the unpainted Nolzur's line. Thanks for the comment Dom!

I haven't had an issue I would prep them before, since I know what is coming up in game as DM. I love they can release new vinyl decals in the future. Still easier than carrying all the minis.

I just got the Creature Case. Thanks so much, not just for the review and alts, but also concrete, " this works, this don't. " So....* any * further advice on not nicking /bending/damaging clings upon disc/ map board removal, and, since I haven't opened my case yet, could I cut out 1" like "pop tarts" box cardboard disc's, draw on em and put those on the plastic case discs? Waste of time? Thanks again guys!

Could you stick a vinyl picture on both sides of the token and leave them on? I saw somewhere there are 150 stickers and 64 tokens. So you could get 128 usable creatures out of it. You would need to ditch 32 creatures.

Not a bad idea...and one that lots of people mentioned in the comments. We also took the suggestion from one person to put the clings on slightly off center near the lip of the token. That gives you an easy edge to grab for removal. It doesn't look pretty, but it makes removal MUCH easier. Thanks for the comment and for watching our vid!

Just pick up the 4e Monster Vault (cardboard tokens set). This new set is just trying to make the MV more complicated.

That's a great suggestion Kyle! That set can run upwards of $100, but you'll likely never need to purchase another mini/token ever again. I think they go for $50-$70 pre-owned on eBay.

I have the 4th ed. box with the tokens, simple, easy, I used it earlier today! I also have minis I buy at the game store on a weekly basis which are cheaper if you buy them two at a time. That is a no on that clunky creature case for me.

I almost bought this to run a game on vacation, but I couldn't justify it. The weighted tokens look nice, but I could just use flat pack minis or just some bases I guess. Thanks for confirming my previous thoughts.

Why arent the tokens auto numbered?!?! Number all the token sides 1 to X, then you as a dm can just look at a number while the sticker can be the flavor, also an indent in the token that you can get a nail under. In fact maybe magnetic swap top

Great question! Seems like a massive oversight. If you're only fighting four of a single enemy type you COULD slap each one on a different colored token. To be honest, this thing needed a little more time in the R&D stage at WotC. Thanks for dropping by the comment section William Kirk!

Can you use dry/wet erase pens on the tokens if you are using monsters they don’t have clings for or just don’t want to deal with the clings?

Haven't tried wet/dry erase markers, but we have just used blank colors for monsters that aren't in the set. Looks boring on the table, but it DOES work. Hope that helps a little!

Great review. I was really disappointed with this case for the same reasons you listed. The only way I could give this a recommendation is if WoTC continues to come out with the clings. The amount supplied in the case for the price just isn’t good enough.

ooooof. Yea, no. Reusable clings are not the way to go for either efficiency or durability. Just use a virtual tabeltop HDMI'd through a wide screen tv. Or if you want physical tokens, just get minis. You cant number them so right off the rip, you have a nonfunctioning feature.

I know I am late to the party but can you use them double sided, like sticking a kobold on one side and another monster on the other site and than just never change them or does this not work?

Hi Jan - Yes there isn't anything stopping you from doing that. We don't think you'd be able to do all of them, but you could get the most commonly used monsters on there. It would certainly save on setup and prep!

i've spent around $20US on homemade pawn bases made of MDF circles, paperclips and hot glue. made 24 for medium/small creatures, 12 for large, 8 for huge and 2 for gargantuan. also printed the pathfinder pawns from pirated pdfs and got all i need, also i follow like 4 different artists on patreon that make paper minis and got everything in their catalog for $3/month. NOTE: i didn't pirate out of just cheapness, getting TTRPG stuff is very hard in my country and very expensive. even the $10 to $12 on patreon for the paper minis is a big investment for me

I have a sizable pathfinder pawn collection. The interest I have in this product stems from a desire to play with Wotc liscensed creatures. Your beholders, mind flayers, and displacer beasts for instance. Is it worth 50 dollars? Am I gonna buy it anyways? ... I'll give it time and watch the price.

Hi Steve - We don't think you'd be able to use them all...but most of them for sure. Just make sure to stick duplicates of the same creature on different color tokens. That way it's easy for the players and DM to specify which one just took damage.
