Have you been looking to include more of the magic of dragons into your D&D game? Fizban's Treasury of Dragons is the reference guide that will help you do just that. Perhaps you're on the fence as to whether you should invest in this new book and you just need a little help deciding. This week, I took a look at Fizban's Treasury of Dragons from a game master's perspective and asked the question - is this book worth your time as the GM? The short answer is yes, but why? Take a look to find out why I think this book is most certainly worth your time.

The fun thing about ttrpgs is the versatile storytelling nature of them. Like in that wizard wanting dragon's blood, for example, you don't technically have to slay the dragon. You could negotiate a deal with it where it will just give you a vial or two of its blood in exchange for, say, 250 gold per vial. Keeps the dragon alive for a near limitless supply of blood for the wizard, dragon gets gold to start building a hoard, and no one has to put their lives in danger.

@@NathanHydra not a problem. I've been playing and DMing for over 30 years and grew up starting out playing the old D&D "board" style game that had a few minis and player cards before moving on to AD&D. I've player in most of the different setting in D&D through the years. Though I do have to admit I stopped following after 3.5. I had no interest in 4.0 or 5.0 editions. Things changed way too much between 3.5 and 4.0 for my liking and 5.0 just became worse for me.

Speaking about the Dragon moving into an area and "terraforming" it too it's preferred conditions. I actually had this sort of "problem" going on in part of my campaign. An ancient white dragon moved into this area and the surroundings started freezing over. So much that 1/2 of a town was affected by the creeping freeze. On top of that, some comets were flying overhead and triggered a panic in the citizens. It's a shame that campaign didn't last long (real life got in the way).

In my experience, yes, I agree. It’s great for new DMs/GMs, especially if you’re the kind of person to make your own campaign instead of run a module. It gives good guidance on making/running adventures, lowering the effort to run the game, and plenty of prompts and information to make something YOU and your your party would like. I am biased against modules, but this one book feels like it is way more useful over a Dungeon Master’s career.

(2:14) - OGAS : For those whom don't follow you, or have not seen your other videos, or found you for the first time, it might be nice to explain what 'OGAS' is. Either a quick reminder/explanation within the video, or a point to a card where that 'term' is explained / described, or even a short text explanation in the description. Otherwise, they might not figure out what OGAS means. Just a suggestion.

Please do a thorough review of what you liked/disliked in the book. Most channels focus heavily on the player content and the DM resources, but don't really talk much about how/why a GM would benefit or not benefit from using or not using it. The more D&D-focused channels have told me the gist of what's in the book, but I like your channel because you focus more on the how/why than just the what.

I had written this book off as irrelevant to me, because in my world a major mystery is that the dragons all went missing around 300 years ago. No bodies left behind, just vanished. However, my spouse found out about and wants to play a drakewarden ranger, and the fact that the class is tied to a dragon SPIRIT instead of a physical dragon, it gives my upcoming campaign a hook to pursue that mystery. So now I'm curious what all it includes and we ordered it so that they can reference the physical copy.

Something interesting for the dragon hunter idea for high level parties is, what if the ancient dragons metallic and chromatic alike, those even experienced dragon hunters are wary of, are banding together either with others of the same type or even with each other, summon / become a greatwyrm, or summon one of the aspects of Bahamut and Tiamat, which are in the book, so now the dragons do something they usually would have never truly done, convene and beg their gods to help, and now the script is flipped and now a dragon far more powerful than anyone could comprehend is wiping out entire settlements of dragonhunters or really anything that stands on 2 legs and is the size of a Ogre or smaller

Oh friend, you're missing out not knowing about Fizban. Honestly, he's my favorite wizard from any fantasy setting... he's basically the voice of the GM for the game that inspired the Dragonlance series of novels, the group's patron essentially... and I expect he's featured since they recently settled the contracts with the authors for a new series in the setting to come out soon. Fizban is a doddering old fool of a wizard who sometimes breaks the fourth wall and his spells never work as expected, often as some wordplay on the spell's name - like, casting Featherfall, he accidentally conjures a mountain of feathers to soften his landing. I could express some how his character inspires me in campaign design, but I wouldn't wish to spoil the novels for anyone.

I made my own dragons for my setting, not aligned by scale color. Pink Dragons for example exist, and my players love them even if the Pink ones have a habit of talking too much... way too much. Like, kidnap villagers to listen to them talk. They get their pride hurt by those who ask or demand silence, and are very wrathful by nature. The pink they met talked, but was young so hadn't developed the pride of older dragons over shorter lived beings. Befriending the Pink I rewarded them in an upcoming fight. The dragon kept flying away, but the pink would for it down for a round or two. Eventually the Pink had to flee, but by then the White Dragon they were fighting (More bestial in behavior) was near death.

I own many D&D5e books, all of them for inspiration as I use mainly TDE (3e/4e) rules for my own game worlds. Thus I considered this book too. I have decided against it for one reason. It is basically only useful for worlds where dragons are like D&D dragons. D&D dragons are basically powerful persons with their own culture and lifecycle. They are aliens who are frankly quite close to humans in motivations and values. They are the Smaugs and Dracos sometimes almost demigods but never just an animal. I get it, for a dragon to be useful in D&D games they have to be powerful and intelligent, else the very powerful characters will overcome one easily. But exactly this is what makes D&D dragons fairly boring to me. I like the idea of dragons being very intelligent animals like ravens, crows or collies and dolphins/orcas. And hidden in all those "regular" dragons there might just be the occasional one of human or higher intelligence. Also of course there are the demigod or even god-like ones. So this book is good for a D&D game and for D&D dragons but it is quite restricted, as it should be! After all, it is a D&D product.

And that means that you won't know his iteration as Zifnab (higly creative) in the Deathgate Cycle either. Those I really reccomend for some novel setting Ideas. @arakasi2

Using Fizban as the lore giver actually detracts from the point of the book. As other people have pointed out, Fizban is the human avatar of Paladine, the Platinum Dragon. As such, he is linked to the Dragonlance campaign setting. Dragonlance dragons are not like Realms dragons or Oerth dragons. Their stats may be the same, but their relationship to the other intelligent races is fundamentally different. And the goals and motivations of a Krynn dragon will be fundamentally different from those in other settings. In the Dragonlance Chronicles, (spoiler alert) dragons are seen as myths until the chromatic dragons reappear. The metallic dragons don't interfere because Takhisis kidnapped all the metallic dragon eggs and was holding them hostage. Then Takhisis teaches her clerics the ritual to corrupt the dragon eggs to form draconians to serve in her armies. Now try to come up with a dragon's motivation that doesn't tie into that somehow.

The review of the GM section was great, but I will say, I don't like the insulting of the player sections. Just saying you're not a fan would be fine, just focusing on the part of the book that's really relevant to your channel audience and personal interest is fine, but calling it a waste of space and saying you don't know why the fluff character who ties it to the official lore is in there? I came very close to clicking away before you even got to the real review. Maybe I'm just too used to people coddling producers and never saying a bad word or something, but this goes beyond discarding the work people put into this and into something else entirely. Say it's not your style, propose your alternate ideas if you have them, and move on. Don't call the work worthless and say the fluffy bits shouldn't be there.

Dragons are so overdone and underdeveloped, that this gives me hope that maybe people will put a bit more thought into them than "Powerful thing!!!!!". Please let this be one of the signs of the end of boring ass dragons populating the fantasy genre.

There is a lot of info in it...But there's a LOT of missing information on dragons other then the basic 15. They are missing the other Matalic, Chromatic and Jem dragons for a start let alone the other kinds of dragons. And Kobalds are totally missing from the book, who are of dragon blood. But of course they do have Dragon born... a cheap knockoff of Kobalds IMO.

My group is in the process of transferring back to 3.5. We are getting a little burned out on the politically correct, modern-ideology of wizard of the coast. I think anyone who looks at Orc's and sees them as a racist stereotype that needs to be corrected has missed a key aspect of fantasy escapism. I also really don't understand the point of removing the 'racial ability score adjustments'. There were always rules to adjust those, but they set a good base line expectation, a short hand by which player knew what to expect. It seems odd to me that WotC is moving in the direction of having no baseline awareness if the halfling is going to be stronger than the Orc... My expectations/biases have led to some memorable character interactions. Personally, I was always enamored of the rules for making magic items in 3.5. I do not particularly like the remarkably restricted 'slots' for magic items that is core to 5th edition. I know why it's there, in 3.5 in a high-magic setting, the magical gear your character has is more important than their class abilities. A cunning crafter with time to spend on crafting can quickly become extremely over-geared and over powered... and yet, it feels so much more fitting for D&D. I would be shocked if you could point to any of the iconic characters of popular stories and convince me that they only have 3-meaningful magic items. Plus there were a couple other dynamic elements that i miss... Wizards walking around with dozens of scrolls so they can make good use of some of the niche-spells that no one would ever prepare, or rogues 'tricking' magic items into working (prior to level 13), or any of the mishaps that could come from failing the roll to do so.
