I cannot help but think Ilmater and Loviator have some "Love/Hate" relationship. Loviator hates Ilmater for Relieving Pain but Loves Trying to Hurt him, while Ilmater vaguely hopes to Redeem her or at least some of her followers, and taking Solace that when she's focused on him, she is less likely to hurt anyone else.

The fact that he can instantly destroy torture implements is honestly incredibly beautiful. Ilmater has always been of my favourite DnD Gods.

Ilmater, the god of Suffering, is defacto the God of Hope. As long as there is Suffering, there will be Hope, for one was born of the other.

I remember I had a Half Orc cleric and I just picked Illmater totally randomly. Then I found out how he is like DND Jesus. I will always remember my little half orc. He was a half orc but he had human looking skin, but an orc face. He grew up in poverty, and one day just left. He acted a lot like a 1940's navy corpsman. I think I should play with him again soon.

Illmater is like the Jesus of D&D... right down to how he's illustrated as suffering and broken; Jesus on the cross taking on everyone's sin (suffering). My cleric was a Cleric of Ilmater who once was a powerful noble who had done terrible things before his son was tortured to death by a wizard. When this happened he freed his own prisoners and gave away his lands to the peasants living on his lands before going on a spiritual journey to atone for the suffering he caused. He sees adventuring and helping others as a way to atone for oppressing his people. He also wears a home brew item I made called "The Hand of Thorns" which is a gauntlet with spikes a long the inside and outside of the gauntlet that causes 1d4 damage over time. For any damage taken a thick vine of thorns will lash out at the attacker and deal 1d6 damage. I have a little bit of a funny story about this for any who are interested. If you are just comment.

I played a Tiefling twilight cleric of Ilmater that traced her infernal lineage to Levistus. Her adoptive brother was a paladin of Ilmater and had rescued her from bondage in a temple of Loviatar. I actually had her wear a long cord around her waist that was tied at both wrists to symbolize her service to Ilmater and harken back to her bondage before entering into service of the temple. She was definitely one of my favorites… and probably one of the most long-suffering characters (and only female) I have played. She was very gentle, but when she finally went into righteous indignation… watch out! Yeah, I want to play her in a sequel campaign! Though her adoptive brother died (my DM really tried to break her), she ended that campaign completing the circle by basically adopting an NPC as her sister. She had lost her memories and had been used as a vessel by a villain at one point (did I mention she was the tool used to kill my character’s adoptive brother)… dang, I forgot how much my character suffered by the hands of the DM! She really was a sweetheart!

Great video like always. Ilmater is a central actor in my campaign in the form of ‘the broken god’ that destroyed himself to seal the Chained God, Tharizdun, away-it’s cool to see a solid summary to refresh my knowledge of him. Also, great lighting!

Ilmater together with Kelemvor are my favourite gods of D&D. I become interested after playing the Mask of the Betrayer. Now, during hard time of my life I am writing fanfic related to a game which is a story about hope and forgiveness with Ilmater being one of characters.

In my world I focused more on Illmater aspect of liberation and preventing harm to others, so their followers are not nearly as pacifistic they lead riots and revolts and while they have been a old god of slave liberation for a long long time it is only recently with the reemergent of slavery due the break down of the human nations that Illmater has become a true well known deity

I just had a moment in my game where I had to describe the High Priestess of Ilmater chained to the symbol of her God, skinned alive but unable to die by a shard that her killers impaled her through the chest with. I literally opened the scene with "There she is, a beloved voice of the God of the Oppressed, a woman who many of you know to have the heart of a saint and a will to provide even beyond her own suffering. Hanged by chains at the wrist and neck, she dangles just a foot above the floor by the stone statued hands of her god as if a puppet. She once stood out in a freezing cold blizzard for 14 hours delivering blankets to those in the slums of your city, she became sick for her trouble and nearly died. (PC's Character's Name) when your father became ill, she would go to your house and give him the medicine he desperately needed, paid for out of her own pocket. During a famine she once volunteered to receive all of the lashes of those who were imprisoned for theft of food... the only condition is that those who were spared the lash were made to watch her sacrifice. There are far more stories shared both personal and otherwise of the inherent nobility of this woman's soul... she has spent her entire life in service to Ilmater and has never regretted for even a moment the sacrifices she made along the way. That bastion of faith and goodness hangs above a pool of her own blood, and though they took her skin, and impaled her on a large green shard that pokes through her chest, even at a cursory horrified glance you realize she's still breathing." The Green shard is a cursed object that prevents a person from being healed while it is lodged in their flesh, but the creature is doomed to die immediately once it is removed. It was an artifact that champions of Ilmater used in times of crisis to be able to keep fighting beyond the point when they should be dead. All forms of dmg and magic cannot bring a subject who has it in their body from dropping below 1HP, however the body can still be broken, and the inability of the subject to be healed or heal from the injuries can lead to circumstances like what the High Priestess was forced to endure. As an aside, this terrible thing that was done to her was DONE to her... she didn't use the shard as an act of sacrifice as it is sometimes used... rather the Devil perpetrators found it and decided it would make a fun horrifying display for their opposition. Before the party dislodged the shard from her chest, she managed to provide them with copious amount of information on where the Devils who did this went as well as what they're looking for. She also managed to cast one last spell and bring them up to full HP. Not a single eye was dry when they ended this poor woman's suffering. Ilmater was already a fan favorite of mine since I started playing in Forgotten Realms, but since I've started playing, the love I have for him has only grown stronger.

I have a magical item Idea. The martyrs hand. Wondrous item, rare, requires attunement. These red stained hand wraps are conduits of the caring nature of ilmattee. As an action you can heal an aligh 2d6 of hit points, but the wearer also takes the same amount healed in damage. This action can cure any disease but once again transfers it to the wearer once again.

I am currently playing an Aasimar Storm Scorcerer/Celestial Warlock/Order Cleric (I rolled really well for stats lol) who serves Tyr but has been opening up to Ilmater and Torm... He grew up at the Monastery of the Yellow Rose and his passion is to enforce the law while helping anyone in need. We just saved Elterel from Avernus and restored Zariel. My character was very zealous and willing to kill people who broke the law, but now he has been learning to be more compassionate and caring to the plight of those who suffer.

A thief could fit if they take a more robin hood type role. Someone who has seen too many suffer because of greed and seeks to ease it by stealing from the sinful and spreading the wealth to those in need.

I am currently playing a Paladin of Ilmater, a Oath of Crown. Main goal is to force ANY threat to focus on ME. And the kicker is, i made him a leper knight, who just wanted to do SOMETHING with his life, something worth remembering.

Idea for a magic item. Once per turn you can choose a target creater and take all their current damage healing them back to full health and make Ingvthem immune to damage for the turn, all healed damage and any damage taken by them the same turn is applied directed to you.. Yes this item can kill you if you are not careful but any death saves that result from this bringing you below 0 hit points gets a +5 bonus to the save and you immediately stabilize if you succeed and are returned to 0 hitpoints. This item takes on the concepts of alleviating suffering, sacrifice and endurance. This is what I would have done with "the ties that bind".

Do tell the truth I sorta came here on a wim, ever since I got Baldur's Gate 3 I've been sorta binging DnD lore videos and Forgotten Realm related post out a curiosity for how I can write my characters(at beyond what I can't already do in BG3). I just really love writing charactersand I just happened to have started a Ilnater Cleric(though I didn't go for any of the Domian recommended XD) playthrough. Helps me flex the writing muscles a bit.

And people wonder why this is mine fav god. I love his concept and I always fell respect for those who are altruistic. And you dont wanna know his true power... as someone said “There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man."

The nice thing about him is, that his followers can appear on all sides of a conflict. They may support an uprising, but they also can side with the nobles (to stop the suffering that the rebels cause). And since the suppressed usually become the suppressors after victory, there is always a reason to get active.

Seems like a Battlemaster fighter who uses their maneuvers to reduce others’ suffering might be a follower of Ilmater.

One of the greatest things I liked about Ilmater's followers is that they are permitted to take time off to go indulge on things to remain strong. Your constantly humble poor priest that always puts the needs of other first can take a week off to Blackguard the shit out of a local thug, then go right back to serving in the soup kitchens and suffering for others.

I have a character, a Tiefling who as a youth was a ruffian and thug. (While doing it to protect and provide for the Little'uns, fellow orphaned children lost in the streets.) He was called Brute, because of how big he was a kid. (13 years old and almost 6 feet tall.) He is of the Zariel Lineage, and becomes an Oath of Redemption paladin when he's told of a better way to protect the ones he cares about. I have his current God as Lathander. If I knew about Ilmatet before, I'd have chosen Him instead of the Morning Lord.

My aasimar lvl 15 divine soul sorcerer, lvl 1 life cleric, & valor bard lvl 4 worships the god Ilmater. ♥️

What domains would you attribute to Illmater other than Life?

Im going to be playing tom cruise, a noble wanna be aasimar cleric, who romanticizes all things that are good, clean, and righteus but despises the dirt that comes with it. The deites from the domain of light never gave him their graces, where he found only ilmater did. Despite that, he hates Ilmater and what the god stood for, seeing ilmater as disgusting, impure, and illogical, using the god as a tool instead. Tom cruise is merely a persona, a way to distance himself from the imperfect self. Underneath he has a want to stop suffering, still an ashole though, but he masks it as cleaning the impure. He'll realize it soon though that slowly he finds meaning in Ilmater and unsurface the traumas from his past understanding himself, leading him to join the companions of the noble heart as Clay Skerftän, the aasimarian Cleric, a mercenary to stop cruelty, whichever way it may take. Can't wait to play him and see his growth!

Always thought as illmater as weak. As i learn more of his actions and perceptions I see it's not that he wishes people to accept suffering but withstand it and move on better for it.

I'm kinda asking myself though what does he forgive and what he doesnt since he is like saving children from torture but at the same time he would even forgive godess of pain ufffffffff

Good watch, thanks! (though at 0.75x speed, you talk a bit quick). It's really helping me create the backstory for my Aasimar. He was was born in an enslaved human tribe. In exchange for Ilmater taking all of the tribes suffering, the would make suere there would always be an Aasimar born there. The first Aasimar ended the slavery, and with a Planetars (in Ilmaters service) guidance he leaves the tribe on quest to end all suffering. The moment the Aasimar dies, a new one would be born. Again, following the Planetars guidance when he comes of age. I'm pretty new in the DnD world, so please let me know if I'm writing something down that lore-wise isn't possible, or if you have any other thoughts! I'd love an Aasimar video by you!

The first principle of Buddhism: life is suffering. It's not at all difficult to fit the Ilmater game stuff into the much more interesting, better developed, and less damn masochistic frame of Buddhism. An Ilmater cleric/monk played like a Shaolin is hugely better than some "beat me, whip me" crap.
