07:50 in adventures that I've run, I've actually done something similar but instead of taking away hit points, I taxed the players hit dice. Kind of like a throwback to healing surges from 4E. That seemed to work well, not directly penalizing them in combat, but still giving a mechanical cost.

We both have enjoyed the idea of healing surges carrying more weight. We didn't discuss it on this show, but it was certainly on our minds!

I got my Forge of Foes and am looking forward to putting it to use in my upcoming games. Such a useful tome for guiding GM's in the creation of their own creatures. So thankful to you Teos, along with Mike and Scott, for pouring so much hard work into this book. Changed up the intro music too! Any reasons behind the switch in fanfares?

Teos here: thanks so much! Truly truly appreciated. We are just so happy with the project and how people react to it. The music changed because for some strange reason KZfaq thinks someone owned the old music, even though it is free, so it strips us of half of all ad revenue. Thank goodness for Patreon.

To the conversation about using hit points as a system inside of role playing, what if we abstracted HP out to be "Luck?" Now it's not literally representing health anymore, just how much luck you have left for the day. In combat your luck is obviously running out quickly, but now, in a negotiation, we can literally reduce HP (or even increase it, whatever) because it represents a different thing altogether. It could even drop to zero in a poor negotiation as long as there was a rule that having 0 luck doesn't render you unconscious and dying unless in combat (I'm sure that can be written more carefully). Of course this is a really big change and would have massive, system wide implications, so not something to do lightly. But it's maybe a starting point for building a system that turns HP into a resource pool that can be used outside of combat.

That could work, for sure! Free Leage has some games where you can try a failed roll again, but it can generate stress if you roll a 1 (and your die might be a d6 to d12). You only have a few points of resolve, so doing so is a risk.

I dig the new music! Some great questions and answers this episode. The question about various lengths of sessions and your responses regarding pacing were especially valuable. Once again, you guys touch on a topic that could become a podcast episode in itself. That sort of nuts-and-bolts topic seems to be in short supply where RPG how-to content is concerned.

Thanks so much! Teos put some work into the new music, so we greatly appreciate the feedback. And yes, we could easily have two more shows just on the great questions!

One of my most successful campaigns consisted of nephew (10), my buddy(40) and his daughter (16), my partner (32), my neighbor (55), and myself (37). We had a blast. Also, no shade to anyone in particular, but let’s stop with the stereotypes that young players write “10 page backstories”, it’s a bad look, and has not been even remotely true in my 27 years of playing TTRPGs.

We were much older when we wrote our 10-page backstories, for sure. Ahem.

@34:30 you talk about B&G Encounter Cards... So, I understand the whole thing about using individual cards (Monsters) to their designed capacity, but how about the Combos? What about the DEALT HAND of cards where you have 4 Goblin Archers, 2 HobGoblins strikers and a Goblin healer in the back? THAT'S an ENCOUNTER. How are they addressing that? Also, Congrats on the book. I kinda wish it was a soft cover to match the rest of the Lazy DM stuff but that's not a real problem. Reading it this weekend.

Table where I’m DM, I’m 47, have two 15 y/os, two in 30s, one in 40s, a 19 year old, and a 9 year old. All have a blast. Game I’m a player, ages late 20s to late 30s and me. Again all fun!

Do you think the group had any more work to come together due to the age difference, or was it similar to other groups where everyone is the same age?
@troysmith6754
@troysmith6754 9 ай бұрын
@@masteringdungeons pretty similar. My youngest had some “I pick pocket everything” moments but really, everyone gets excited about everyone else’s turn or moment. Biggest part is patience. I three young ones basically double combat time due to not knowing what they want. But we are all either friends or family so that lends to a pretty stress-free table. I also had a session zero where everyone tied to a few other PCs. So the youngsters had fun telling their story before they met.

Thanks for the great show! What do you two think of Numenera and it's super simple encounter/difficulty system? I think Shawn mentioned trying it a few weeks ago... Did you try it Theos?
@masteringdungeons

Teos here: I have tried it! I shared some thoughts here: alphastream.org/index.php/2015/12/05/the-search-for-wondla-a-numenera-campaign/ Overall, I like Numenera for one-shots or very short campaigns. I find the simplicity of the encounters/monsters is not quite for me, nor having the DM not roll. I tend to play Numenera/Cypher at cons, where I really like that depth of experience.

@@masteringdungeons Thanks - that sounds like a good system for dragging my D&D players out of their comfort zone for a small story :)
