It'll also help her understand why she couldn't just had it from the start... because she'll try animal handling one (without actually using handle animal, because she doesn't have it trained) and then find out how it reacts, and learn about DC of interacting with creatures of different intellects... I can definitely understand why she would be confused by it as a new player, so it's just a learning curve. Also a DM has every right to say yes and no, and there's nothing wrong with that, players should accept a no with the same gratitude as a yes, the DM makes a world and it's rules, so it'll be challenging and fun, if you get a no, it might not directly make you "satisfied" but in the long run it's overall a part of why it's so fun to play. Just think about a chess game where any piece you have can just kill the enemy's king with 1 move no questions asked, you'll pick 1 random piece, win, and then when the game resets you'll just look at it blankly, and... maybe pick another different piece, you win, and... great.. gg 👏 super fun 👏👏 I think you get what I mean haha 😜

I don't think you understand... What I meant was, if the rules were changed, to your benefit, and wins were just handed to you with no logic or challenge, there will be no joy or satisfaction in actually winning. Translating it to d&d, the fact that fighting a big beast could indeed kill you, and the DM warning you that y'all may very likely die since they took a bit of a high CR boss, that makes winning (or dying) that much more engaging and epic.

But Matt plays "the rule of cool" way too loose and the cast is obviously trying more to entertain. Not to mention that they pick up 3/4 into a *pathfinder* game that they had to scramble to suit 5e. How about Bill just DM's the game and they have fun?

HeyitsJKG While I agree with your main sentiment (don't give these kids unrealistic expectations by showing them a game with much higher production capabilities and players that are, to quote Matt Coleville, "professionally charming"), I do think you're being a little unfair to the cast and crew of CR. I don't think Matt is or was "too loose" with the rules; personally, I'd put any rules issues up to either the oddness of switching over to a new system, or Matt's homebrew rules (which any long-running game/ DM is almost guaranteed to have). I'm sure you know CR recently started a new campaign, so any rules issues will be much less frequent. As for the cast "trying more to entertain," well, they are professional voice actors - being entertaining is kind of their job (again, "professionally charming"). Finally, I again feel that most of the issues with switching from Pathfinder to 5e got hammered out in early episodes, or at least the first arc. It might even be argued that stuff like that could be good for new players, since the cast of CR in early episodes was also new to 5e.

Becoming a teacher is easy. You find a school with an accelerated program and in 1 year you could get your endorsements and certificate. Finding a job at a good school is the hard part. Unfortunately, we live in a time where a lot of governmental requirements basically block teachers from doing their jobs. We spend a lot of time crunching numbers, doing standardized testing, and focusing on pushing kids harder and harder towards academic achievement. I'm blessed; I teach at a school where the administration and school board support all the kids - we have programs for woodworking, automotive, aviation, EMT, all sorts of art options, music, and of course media (we have TV, radio, newspaper, etc.) But still, most schools are under-funded or they spend too much time on AP classes and standardized testing instead of letting teachers actually teach. So...if you wanted to become a teacher, think about WHAT you want to teach and WHERE you want to teach it. That's pretty important. Teachers should be more like coaches and less like lecturers; kids learn better by DOING stuff than just listening and taking notes. The more active and hands-on the class, the better the kids will learn. Hope that helps!

Oh, I forgot part 2 of your question. Best lesson teaching has taught me. I learn this lesson every semester; never underestimate the kids. Remember that they are teenagers and they're always going through things in life. Try to be patient, try to be sympathetic, don't leave any kids out. Make them feel important and inspire them, but also be realistic with them. I constantly remind the kids in my program that film & television are amazing industries with tons of job opportunities, but you have to be a hustler and a hard worker. Nobody's going to hand you a job on a silver platter; you have to go out and get that job and bust your ass to be the best.

I'm totally behind letting players use whatever name they want, even if it makes you cringe every time you hear it, and worse if you ever have to say it. In fact, take the opportunity to role play the name and the reactions of the NPCs to it, the rest of the world cringes just as much as you do, maybe even teats the PC differently because of the name. Perhaps the name, or the imagery it evokes, is considered lewd or profane, and the PC finds themselves on the wrong side of the law. There are names in this world, that have been given by parents to their children, that make us all ask "what were they thinking" (i.e. Johnny Cash - Boy Named Sue), invariably, those children are tormented by their peers, and taken less seriously by adults, and lead harder lives because of a silly or stupid name. Characters are just like a player's child, hopefully after a shortsighted naming choice, and seeing the effect, both the child and parent become more wise. Adding my 2cp to the pile

It's a lesser draconic subspecies. You can only get it when you get to level 3 as a warlock and only if you choose pact of the chain as your class feature. They are as intelligent as humans and understand every word you say even they it can't talk (Though I wouldn't be surprised it some can read) so treating it like just an animal will insult it. David Ens true familiar, in fact chainlock could get a more powerful familiar, like an imp or fairydragon, Personally I would take imp and say it spends most time in cat form

From my experience familars vs. Animal companions is give and take. Familiars have 1hp but can be summoned in 1 hr (10 mins I believe if ritual cast, maybe the other way around? Its been a year since I've dealt with find familiar) while an animal companion (revised ranger for sure) gets HD and levels with the PC so its substantially harder to kill, but it takes much longer to tame an animal than to summon a spirit (my dm had a minimum of 8 hrs to tame)

Han Yolo not until level 3 when she can choose her pact. Patrons are your level 1 choice

Because in 5e familiars are a HUGE asset when used correctly. There is a reason theres a spell dedicated to it.

Because she wasn't asking for a pet - she was asking for a familiar. She's playing a Warlock, and Warlocks can't take Find Familiar as a spell, so they can't start with a familiar at 1st level. But there are at least three ways to work around it. Bill didn't say she *can't* have a cat familiar, just that she can't *start* with one.

To me it's OK, he's not spoon-feeding them. Also, we still don't know Anna but it's already made clear she has a strong personality with defiant burst, you shouldn't concede anything easily and right away to such a kid. She fancies a cat, she must earn it.

technically with her current choices she doesn't start with a familiar. Thats why she has to earn it. and she can add the reasoning behind having that desire as part of her back story.

but we're not talking about a familiar, we're talking about a pet that an 8yo can have.
