I had my first DnD game last night with a group of friends. Without spoilers for Baldur's Gate, we had to protect this woman from a band of pirates coming for her. Right when the combat started, one of the city guards was leaving the room, and I was going to let him go. But my friend rolled persuasion (Char 6) and convinced him to stay in the fight.... We definitely would have lost without his tanky health pool. Something so small did so much! Love DnD.

That bard deserves a medal. Some ppl who are veterans on this game wouldn't have had this on the spot insight to just save everyones behind so spetacularly as this kid did. Slow clap. Also he incorporated the bard persona realy well from the start, where he is always trying to charm everyone and talk his way out of situations rather than going for actual confrontation.

My very first character was a human valor bard, all the way back in 2014, sadly, I never got to play him more than 1 session. My friend who ran the game moved away due to financial reasons, and the guy who took over ran "politics and dark souls" the dnd campaign, where he jerked himself off all for telling all the players to figure it out when no one spoke Draconic and the only quest he was allowing was coming from a dragon who spoke only Draconic... Currently, my favorite combination is hexblade warlock/forge cleric.

Sean was really proud of the dice tray he made himself and was informing everyone of the types of wood that he used when he realized no one was interested !! After that he seemed to go all brooding and uninterested for a while !! I was really impressed with your tray Sean !! I wish you would make me one !!

Big hint for those who are new. If the DM tells you the name of a city/country/continent, etc and the names of the rulers etc, write them down. The DM is going to reference it in the future.

Hopefully they'll read your comment, Paul. It's spot on - none of them knew to take any notes (which they definitely SHOULD do). Nothing I do in my games is pointless; literally every general fact or small detail has some importance.

To be honest you should not take notes on things related to the basic info of the setting you're playing in (unless you realy want to), thats why we have compemdiums with these info, and if it is a custom made scenario the DM is the compemdium. Otherwize the players will be writting an enitre book of info by the end of the first hour of gameplay. Players should take notes of stuff pertaining to the adventure they are going on, cause thats their responsability, in my games if I tell ppl the name of a contact for example and they don't take notes and forget the name, then thats their problem to solve how they are gona locate the contact they don't have the name of anymore, but basic scenario backstory should be public knowledge provided in material acessible to the players (or by the GM when asked).

Can we just commend Matt's ability to roleplay his character? When he said he only knew common vocab words, I thought he would just speak as if he were unintelligent. Instead, he went all out and actually spoke with only vocab words. The moment he went to ask a question and just said, "Inquisitive," I knew we were in for something great.

1. hands down to this bard, he didnt let the chaos phase him,always kept the character and let his charm take the best 2. the warlock goes to reach him with her spell and fails, enemy goes to reach her and kick... slips on a banana peal and falls next to the enemy... what a great group of heroes and villains, truly inspiring 3. ''can i punch him and at the same time sneak my hand in and steal from him?'' spoken like a true thieve, i like it! 4. Bill: so how are you gonna atack him? Carl: with my flute. seems legit 5. Once again, Heather proves herself and roll a 20... like usual... 6. SERIOUSLY! hands down to this bard, both for the gameplaying strategy on its own abilities but also for the roleplaying the guy is seriously doing, saving an entire party with a show really fits him, i never took bards seriously for fighting with flutes but i'll consider one when i play

Altorin Currently playing a Pathfinder version of one of my most played characters, Lazam Janzin. The quintessential Halfling Rogue, with a utility belt of random situationally useful objects like flour, ball bearings, caltrops, chalk, a crowbar, oil, etc. His best friend is a big, ugly Half-Orc Barbarian named Thorn Bloodfist. Not only is he nearly always on Thorn's shoulder, but Thorn also serves as his pack mule for all his goofy little items. I initially had a 6 in Strength that was reduced to a 4 because of the Halfling racial penalty, but upon doing some math, we found out that I wouldn't even be able to wear my armor without breaking my light load (and getting disadvantage on basically everything as a result). Swapped around stats a bit to get a 6 in Strength post-penalty, so that I could at least wear armor and carry a weapon. Thorn carries everything else. Really fun way to interconnect two characters, opens up loads of RP potential.

It's not so much based on who wanted to continue playing; it's based on their actual class schedule. Heather was the only person from season 1 who has my class 2nd semester. But...you may be able to see some season 1 cast members return for cameo appearances in season 2.

You back up a distance and proceed to sprint back towards the building dropping your shoulder as if you were to ram the door then last second you leap into the air. Crashing through the 8'x8' window. The bartender, amazed that it stopped making such an obnoxious noise, opens and closes the door repeatedly to see if it stopped for good. It did, and the door is now as silent as a church mouse. The bartender, overjoyed, shakes your hand and gives you 50 gold for fixing the door.

As a man with some... rough language that I perfected in the USAF, and a father of a 23 year old and a 13 year old, I’m not offended or worried you might harm these teenagers minds, But I bet there are some who think otherwise. That being said, to all those people, LET THE MAN TEACH IN WHATEVER MANNER WORKS FOR HIM, BECAUSE THESE KIDS WILL LEARN! WHY? BECAUSE THEY ARE TREATED AS ADULTS. Yeah, they're all seniors and I'm pretty sure all of them are 18. We do try to keep the language reasonable, but clearly a few colorful words may have slipped in here or there.

@@BillAllanWorld to be fair i was using colorful language way before being a senior... lets be realistic these kids have internet and social media... they swear. LOL. If they don't swear they at least hear it and see it every where in peers or social media. I like the style of this because i remember being a teen and having adults at least MILDLY treat you like an adult helps build a connection and confidence. It's huge it lets you be yourself and relax and isn't that what d&d should be? relaxing, having fun and allowing yourself to freely play.

I had one in 7th grade, Mr. Fahs. Did not like the teacher until I went to this 9th period club. Once I started playing the game, I really saw him for who he was and why he was like that. I thought he was pretty cool after that and I think that is the reason that I did so well in all my science classes all the way through college (maybe). Anyway, if it was not for him, I may have never started playing the game to begin with.

So cute how these students are being just a little bit shy around the table. Let's hope that in time they'll get over their shyness and learn to really play out their characters, that's almost the most fun part of a game of D&D. Very fun game though, and they're obviously enjoying themselves. Keep it up guys, big thumbs up!

Hmm... at 280 miles across, that's slightly larger than Ireland, roughly the same size as the island Aleafano in the campaign I play in. End to end, that's only ~2 weeks travel if you can go mostly straight.

For when you or they roll a one what you should do is add the pebble. No matter what if there’s a natural one the character or NPC trips on the pebble, fails at what they do and take one damage

Question... how did you pitch "I want to teach kids D&D as a class" to admin? I realize it's an AV class but I feel like I would bump into a stick in rump scenario should I try. Love it though. Keep it up.

Here's the set up: all of these kids are advanced students in my media class. We have a full TV station at the high school (on cable and the web), and kids can take the class as a repeated elective. Sean, for example, has taken the class like 13 times. So, the advanced group decided to make the show their ongoing series (instead of something like a talk show, news program, etc.) We also have the club, which allows kids who are not in the class to participate in LTTV. So sometimes the crew are kids from the club. So really, there was no pitch to admin, because we've always had student-produced programming. My administration is very supportive of our program, and they see the value of kids taking control of their own learning and embracing our program. What's cool for me personally is that they wanted to do D&D after they learned of my love for the game.

Got ya. Very cool. I'll admit I showed bits of I believe S1E3 to my "AV" class last week as an exemplar / help push some ideas / discussing lighting and angles and showing them what other students had done as a preface to their upcoming project. They asked "Is that what we have to do?" inside I might have pouted, but no, I'm not forcing their project down any road. Thanks for the reply. Props to the kids. \o_

This is baaaasically the High School version of something like Critical Role, just with relatively inexperienced players. It’d probably be easier to sell a project like this to school administration using that & what Bill & the LTTV students have done here as examples. Theater / Improv / TV Production all naturally ties in & if you bring the students in on world building / lore you could even tie in Creative Writing as you assemble a show bible.

I discovered your channel the other day and burned through season 1. Really enjoy your series. I’ve never played myself but I’ve gotten prepared with the starter kit and the three main books “just in case” I can find a group. Mountain Dwarf is life.

It’s great to see people of all ages and backgrounds come together to simply enjoy a role playing game like this. Incredible story crafting by Bill, and all of the students are so unique to themselves as well as their characters. This episode gave me quite a few hearty laughs, I can’t wait to watch more. I literally just played my first session of DND today and I've come across this the same day. I watched all of season 1 and I'm very glad I can watch season two more or less from the start. Very pleased with finding this

I hate to be that guy, but the rogue should have gotten sneak attack when riding on the halforc's back. All you need is for an ally to be within 5 feet of the person you're attacking to get sneak attack. Also, the warlock should be adding her proficiency bonus to her spell attacks. Otherwise, fun stuff.

Bill, I think it's great that these kids wanted to play D&D after learning your love of the game. It's also wonderful to see Anna and Heather as I DM a group of 8 amd only one is a woman. I feel there's a lack of girls playing the game in general. Maybe it's just the area I'm in or if it's more global and I wonder what can be done to help make girls more interested Role Playing.

Growing up playing RPGs, there were not a lot of girls in the game. I think the culture is changing though. I see a lot more females at conventions, at local gaming stores, and at MeetUp gaming events. I think it's great for everyone. I periodically run games for my own kids and their friends, with ages ranging from 8-13. They play very well together. In fact, sometimes the kids play better than adults! They are creative, cooperative, and even strategic. I think the future looks bright for tabletop RPGs.

I started DMing about a year ago... Most of my sessions are couples. The women in the group tend to take better notes and at the end of the first session are asking when's the next one.

I am in a party of 6 with 2 males. It can be done. And honestly, the girls, I think, are more invested in the game, take better notes, and help arrange for a time to have the next session.

When a DM breaks out a fancy 3d map with miniatures, expect to.never leave that area for the whole gaming session. Which is why i dont care for miniatures

Well, you're probably playing 4 hour sessions, not an hour an a bit. Short episodes means they can switch the fancy terrain often, so they don't get stuck in the area. And in the first season it looked like he had quite a lot of small pieces, which means adventuring in the wild with a generic grassy ground texture would work just fine. Don't really need a specific layout for every random spot in the forest after all.
