During a short time at USAF base in Germany, took a trip to Luxembourg to see the US cemetery and General Patton's grave. The bus ride back was properly quiet. I feel most WWII veterans had a decent life afterward. I lost my Grandfather in 1977, he was a Navy Seabee operating the bulldozers for runways on the islands. A bullet took part of his cheek, but instead of going home, healed and returned to duty. There aren't many left now...I salute them all.

No matter how many times I've heard Eisenhowers little speech to the soldiers on their departure, it still sends blows me away. He said just the right things. I also love that Churchill wanted to go too. I know he wasn't perfect, but no one can say the man wasn't brave. Even at that age, he wanted to be part of the action. ;)

I am very concerned about the youth of today should war be thrust upon us again. I think it will come to GenX to get shit straightened out as cell phones and PlayStations don't make for good weapons. CoD isn't a substitute for actually going out and 'shooting the shit' with an actual gun.

@RickL_was_here Right? No kidding. People in general were tougher then. The war years were still a time predating many conveniences. Especially for the average citizen. We are super soft now. God help us all if we really do ever see another world war, the thought is terrifying....

One of the reasons that WWII veterans did so much better emotionally following their service then the Veterans from latter wars was the military units stayed together throughout the war. Since then soldiers rotate in and out. Staying together builds a family between the Veterans who then take care of each other. I just retired after working over three decades in mental health at the VA. These men and women were a joy to serve and to have as part of my life.

With horrible result, the men were terribly seasick and cold and wet from the weather drastically reducing their effectiveness when they did. Another avoidable command error not mentioned which cost unnecessary casualties was overloading the amount of stuff the first wave troops were required to carry, affecting both the airborne and seaborne me but especially causing many avoidable drownings.

Several errors in the narration, e.g. “Great Britain is just half the size of any of the fifty states”, history and imagery, and, as the title implies, an overwhelmingly narrow and skewed emphasis on American actions as part of an Allied invasion makes this great collection of footage a waste of time for anyone interested in the true story of D-Day. 3/10 as a documentary, 10/10 for weirdly revisionist propaganda.

The Germans broke the German army. If Goering could have kept the 3 army groups on the eastern line supplied like he said he could with the Luftwaffe, Germany would have crushed Stalingrad and been to Moscow. I’m so sick of this Russian propaganda BS. Given the fact you were fighting in your own continent so close to home it should have been easier. Poor supply’s and cold weather beat the Germans. Not Russia. Also, America was fighting on 2 fronts, half a world away from our home. Nobody helped us with Japan. Get bent.

Fantastic D-Day documentary. Only criticism is that when the documentary moves onto the ending of WW2 it refers to the US droppings of the two Atom Bombs on Japan as bringing about the Japanese surrender. Unfortunately, it is not true that the Japanese surrendered because of the Atom Bombs dropped on two of their cities. The Japanese had lost more lives in the US bombings of Tokyo and other cities than it did when the atom bombs were eventually used. The Japanese were therefore undeterred by the massive lose of life in the cities on which the atom bombs were dropped. Japan actually decided to surrender to the Americans because Russia had at around the same time as the Atom bombs were used, had also declared war on Japan and invaded parts of Northern Japanese occupied China. As Japan had been fighting the USA for so long it no longer had the military power and capability to also fight Russia. Therefore, rather than surrender to the Russians, and lose the Japanese Emperor, Japan surrendered to the USA which had agreed to allow Japan to keep its Emperor.
@malibu13203

You realize that the Japanese were trying to use the Russians to negotiate a surrender for months before the bombs or russias declaration? They were going to surrender looong before Russia got involved, they just wanted favorable terms
@stargazer5784
@stargazer5784 4 ай бұрын
That's only one opinion as to why the Japanese surrendered. Maybe right, maybe not. Stating flatly that they didn't surrender because of the bomb is rather arrogant and authoritative. None of us can know what was actually going through their minds at the time.
@greggrace967
@greggrace967 4 ай бұрын
I would have to say that the damn A-bomb had a whole hell of a lot to do with their surrender. They started to capitulate after the first one according to documentaries I've seen about the war. It was the military generals that had their way and wanted to fight on. And again after the 2nd one, but they had had enough.

@malibu13203
@malibu13203 4 ай бұрын
@@greggrace967 the Japanese had been attempting to negotiate surrender through the Russians during the island hopping campaign. They were trying to get favorable surrender terms. They had already been planning to surrender. They knew they couldn’t win. They just wanted to end it on their terms. The second bomb was honestly more of a show of force to Russia than any attempt to get the Japanese to surrender because that was already in the works. If the bombs were about forcing their hand, they would have been dropped on Tokyo or other, bigger cities.
