The length of time since the D-Day Landings in World War Two mean that there are very few military survivors who will be taking part in the 80th anniversary commemorations this week. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
More than 150,000 from the UK, the US, Canada and France took part in what was the largest ever military operation on June 6th, 1944.
Some 30 surviving veterans from the UK have returned to Normandy via a ferry crossing from Portsmouth.

My great uncle Jim was a British tank commander during D Day. He was sitting on top of the lead tank with the top hatch open when a German anti aircraft gun, with its barrel lowered, sent a shell directly into the front of his vehicle. He was blown 30 foot in the air suffering extremely bad burns and landed in a ditch. His life was saved when a platoon of African / American soldiers found him later that day. He was so badly burnt and blackened from his injuries that the African American soldiers assumed he was one of their own and he later regained consciousness in an American field hospital! Amazingly he survived and subsequently lived well into his 80’s. Heroes

I have been in a very teary state leading up to this Ann. Now watching the clips. I am worse I am Canadian. My Dad landed on Juno Beach that day at the age of 20. He never talked about it. We watched the specials on TV but he never spoke about it He had a good life when he came home. Worked hard and had a good life. My parents raised us to be appreciative and strong. We offered to take him to the 50th Ann celebrations but he didn't want to go. Seeing some of these gentlemen in the beach band their emotions. I understand now. My Dad lived to be 89 and would have been 100 this past March. All I can say is....Thank You Dad....Thank you Gentlemen God bless you all. 😘🇨🇦

Ignored by the media circus, eighty years ago today Rome was liberated and the British Indian Army was getting stuck in out in Burma. In far worse conditions than Normandy. Fergal Keane, hats off for the brilliant work you did for the 14 th Army out East.

To see your friends and comrades fall, to know you must push on, to know that the future for your grandchildren, and their grandchildren, depended on you that day. How all the Jews trapped in concentration camps depended on you for their futures as well. How I would love to spend hours with them and hear their stories. We must also make sure that those who fought and those who lost their lives on D day so we can live in freedom and peace did not do so in vain. All talk of a 'world war three' needs to stop, now. 80 years ago, General Eisenhower directed the greatest invasion force in history. Shortly before D-Day, he came to inspect the American troops in training in Exmoor, England. One day, he told his aides to wait for him while he climbed alone to the summit of a hill. There, aware of his helplessness, the man who would become President of the United Sates turned to the Lord is prayer. Whatever battles we face, prayer to God is our greatest weapon.
