जगप्रसिद्ध अजिंठा लेणी बघण्यासाठी दररोज देश-विदेशातील हजारो पर्यटक छत्रपती संभाजीनगर जिल्ह्यातील सिल्लोड तालुक्यात येतात. जवळपास दोन हजार वर्षांपूर्वी कोरलेल्या अजिंठा लेणीमध्ये अतिशय सुंदर शिल्पचित्रे आहेत. अजिंठा लेणीचा इतिहास जाणून घेण्यासाठी अनेक जण इथे दिवसभर निरीक्षण करत असतात.
१८ एप्रिल १८१९ मध्ये ब्रिटिश कर्नल जॉन स्मिथ अजिंठा डोंगरात फिरत असताना त्याने पहिल्यांदा ही लेणी पाहिली. जॉन स्मिथने ही माहिती ब्रिटन सरकारला दिली. यानंतर अजिंठा लेणी जगासमोर आली. अजिंठा डोंगरातून मधोमध वाघुर नदी वाहते. पावसाळ्यात वाघूर नदी खळखळून वाहते. त्यामुळे अजिंठा लेणी पाहावयास येणाऱ्या पर्यटकांचा आनंद द्विगुणीत होतो. या ठिकाणी 26 लेणे आहेत.
गौतम बुद्ध यांचा जन्म ते मृत्यूपर्यंतचा इतिहास अजिंठा लेणींमध्ये बघायला मिळतो. पुरातन काळातही शिल्पकला किती उत्कृष्ट होती, याचा नमुना म्हणजे अजिंठा लेणी होय. छत्रपती संभाजीनगर जिल्ह्यातील वेरूळ लेणी, अजिंठा लेणी बघण्यासाठी पर्यटक मोठ्या संख्येने येतात. वेरूळ लेणी छत्रपती संभाजीनगर शहरापासून 28 किलोमीटर अंतरावर आहे.
