Episode 1: • D Smoke on Growing Up ...
Episode 3: • D Smoke on Rhythm + Fl...
Hard Knock Tv's Nick Huff Barili sits down with Netflix's "Rhythm and Flow" winner D Smoke for in-depth interview. In Episode 2, D Smoke and Nick talk about Smoke learning from his students and how its helped him get his bars up. D Smoke shares personal stories of experiences in his class room including a story of one of his students coming to class high and throwing up gang signs on other students and then on Smoke. At first Smoke reacted by trying to overpower the situation but then he learned that showing vulnerability actually worked better in the end. D Smoke says that growing up in Inglewood he tried to ignore the drama around him to not get caught up in trouble but ones he became a teacher it was his job to know what was going on. His interactions with students inspired him to write about the darker side of Inglewood including on the song Lil Red. Smoke finds a balance between talking about what is going on in the streets without glorifying the violence saying that there is nothing glorious about what is going on because its a trap. As the conversation with Nick and Smoke continues, Smoke shares why he never gave up on music through the ups and downs and says that Hip Hop doesn't just belong to the youth. Giving insight to one of his favorite books "7 habits of highly effective people", Smoke says that there is a whole market open for him to make music that is different that what is currently being played on the radio. Episode 2 covers a lot more topics including "Producer of the Year" an album that D Smoke put out in the early 2000's when he was getting his Diddy and DJ Khaled on ! We are just getting started, make sure you subscribe to be notified when episode 3 drops!

I’m a 52 year old African American woman who loves RAP. No. I’ve never wanted to be a rapper, but I listen to the lyrics; as well the musical instruments and I’ve always love it. Hip hop/ Rap is telling a story; whether good or bad, it’s telling about the neighborhoods environments and forecasts, and how it effected minds and lives, good or bad. And I listen because it glistens, in a way that can be positive or negative. Yes, I love it! It’s my heritage. I love you much D Smoke! You’re going places in your life. Stay focus and ALWAYS pay it forward starting with your own neighborhood. Pay Homage. One Love.

When he was talking bout never giving up music all the way, I feel that... that drive is always there no matter what if you really love it. No matter what you’re doing, it’s always in the back of your mind. “You know how many videos I can make with that!?” That feeling is REALLY real...

I'll tell you why the Rolling Stones are touring and Rakim is not. That's because, pardon my language but, a hip hop show is not a show. A rock show is a show. In hip hop, typically you have a DJ playing prerecorded music, and the emcee doing these easiest performance art possible: repeating words from his rap. RELATIVELY SPEAKING, it has less value than other forms of performance art. A rock band will sing and play their instruments live at every show: no exceptions. It's just more entertaining. What people come to a hip hop concert for is to be around people who love that artist and their music, and to see that artist who is relevant now. They don't come for a show. They may get a show in rare cases (like, if the rapper has a huge budget for a band, dances, etc), but typically they don't. So if the rapper who has lost relevance is on tour, his/her "show" is not enough to make people come because it's not even really a show.
