13:21 "And on the right, I'm gonna make a path leading up to a higher level... actually, never mind" In 100th wave, I replaced the rare medikit message with "You're using a source port you don't really need!" But I'm not sure if you ever got low enough to see it. I guess it makes sense that the WAD trying to be a very direct sequel to Doom 1 ends with you pressing TWO exit switches. Always nice to see a story, even when it's basic!

I'm sure I did get low enough to see it, but I probably wasn't paying attention to the messages. It's really kind of a shame that the tools, engine, and available knowledge lagged so far behind mapper's ambitions. There's something kind of amusing about a WAD having an elaborate story behind it, only for the actual map to be fairly basic. Still, I'm glad all of these things exist. As much as people like to malign mid-90s WADs, they have a ton of charm to them.

TRIAL is really basic, but the odd texture alignment really stands out to me. It's all shifted 16 pixels down, putting the big horizontal stripe at the top, making the STAR texture suddenly look pretty unique! It's really interesting how many uncommon possibilities the default textures still hide. It blew my mind when I found out that I can offset the marble texture 24px and get a really nice 96 unit tall skull-less marble for Hell and Earth settings alike.

I wonder if that's a side effect of using DEU's auto-alignment feature. It's a bit less clear when shift like that occur when you don't have a 3D view, after all. Still, like you said, it does make it look really unique!

The author of TRIAL_B1 has another map on idgames that is also in the original D!Zone, SS_E2_M1.WAD. But despite having a completely different storyline in the textfile, it's almost the exact same map as this one. Just with difficulty levels implemented, some custom sounds added, and a few other minor tweaks. DOOMCRYP had a great distribution of ammo, on average.

Kinda sounds like SS_E2_M1 is the final version of this one. Might be worth looking into it. 🤔

Can't share any BBS-era stories because I only got internet when ISDN was a thing (as well as cheap flat-rate ISDN internet access via my university - we were paying by the minute for calls here), but as a kid we had what would basically translate as a "quarter-line" - four households with four phone numbers, but sharing a single phone line so only one could use it at a time... FUN! :( When you reluctantly picked up the chainsaw in DOOMCRYP, I finally realized what DOOM has been missing all that time - a "drop chainsaw" keybind... :D Also, giving DOOMCRYP 6/10 and calling it "not remarkable" basically means it was just markable... :D

Oh wow, that sounds painful. I've never had to deal with anything like that (it wasn't particularly uncommon for suburban geeks like us to have two phone lines-one for voice and one primarily for data), but I've heard stories about line sharing like that happening in the rural parts of the US. I would *love* a drop chainsaw bind. >:D I don't mind picking up the chainsaw on Boom WADs since those allow you to set the weapon priorities. It's definitely a nice-to-have, especially when you don't know if you're getting a berserk later on, but I hate having to switch through it to get to my powered up fists of fury. Also: very punny. ;p

Didn't Wolfenstein 3D have different coloured doors depending on the key? I'm sure it was the lighter door that took the silver key and the dark door took the gold key? It's been quite a while since I've played Wolf 3D.

Nope! Every texture in Wolf3D has a darker and lighter variant depending on the angle (the same fake contrast that Doom does automatically), but there's no correlation. In my biggest Wolf3D mod, I actually utilized the two texture variants in that way, putting two completely different custom textures and making sure all the vertical (wooden) and horizontal (metal) doors always use the same key.

You said that you got copies of the actual CDs off of EBay that you uploaded the level folders from, right? Did you order them still in the shrink-wrapping to be sure they weren’t missing any files? Also, I’ve been working on doing the same with other serial shovelware.

Pressed CDs are read-only, so there's no risk of tampering. There's also no chance of them being CD-RWs, as those weren't introduced until 1997. I can confirm that the CDs were pressed and not burned.

@@Spectere alright. I just like to be sure. Anyway, I wonder if there was any cases of a shovelware set having unique Doom 1 maps. I know Max Doom has Master Levels, but that’s in Doom 2

@@lyokianhitchhiker I know H!ZONE had some unique Heretic levels (I should really get to those at some point), but I don't know of any Doom compilations that have custom WADs.
