A tunnel ram's Achilles heel is a poor vacuum signal. That's the main reason why people increase the compression ratio is to combat the loss of vacuum from the inherently large cam that you'd run to take advantage of the increased VE tunnel rams allow. That being said, you just 'trick' it into thinking it has more compression by running a cam that develops a stronger vacuum signal. Using a wider Lobe Separation Angle (LSA) will help that. Probably 112-114 would do the trick. Most your "hi-performance" long duration cams use tight LSA's, typically 108-110, some as low as 106. These don't make squat for vacuum. So stay away from them. Look into the theory of Dynamic Compression and it will help you cheat the ram on to that 460 without much trouble. Worst case scenario, you'll just loose from the top end, but who cares anyways, right? Rather not have a dog on the street than a top end screamer that can't get off the line!

I think we are right around the same lines here Oly, dang I wish we were closer.... lol This is one kit I've been mulling about in my noodle maker..... and you know my goals better than most... tell me what you think? www.howardscams.com/hydraulic-flat-tappet-street-force-4-camshaft-lifter-kit-1968-1995-ford-429-460-2000-5600-howards The "trick" you mentioned there is right up the alley I was thinking of... for sure!

My 1st thought was the 'Rattler' series, but they all run on 109 LSA, and with that I'm backing it back into the compression game like you said. As for a target RPM.... I think you caught that in there. I don't care if it's a slow spinner, it's a BBF as long as she pulls good torque I'll play with those numbers and let it spin where it wants to spin. Reason I'm looking at these Kits... is because I'm working another trade with another You-Tuber as well, and it's easier to send parts in the mail, than cash... lololololol

@@BareRoseGarage Both those cams are far too rowdy. Back the duration down to 224-228...... 230 would be pushing it. It's hard when you're not 100% sure where your compression ratio is gonna land. Don't focus so much on D0VE heads. The C8 or C9s are damn near identical and even with those will give you substantial gains. The D3 is, like you said, around 93-95cc. The C8, C9, and D0 are all 72cc so thats a huge gain if you can get your hands on a set of any of those. I'd wait on the cam just a bit incase you do get a pair of those, as that will enable you to run a much healthier cam for the setup. Do you have other piston options? Or are you running what in there? And what year is the block? The '68-70 and the 70-71s have about a .010 difference in height.
@OlysGarage

@@BareRoseGarage IF you are stuck with the D3 heads, that cam (guessing on a lot of figures) puts you in the ballpark of a 5.94:1 Dynamic C/R. Horrible The target is around 8:1 give or take .5 - 1 full point or so. So... i don't have any concrete #s because your engine isn't in front of me, worst case scenario your current static C/R would be around 7.88:1. Even if you were to run some really sissy cams, i still don't see it getting anywhere close to the 8.0 DCR one would like to see. Better get ya some heads!

@@OlysGarage Oh yeah, it's all pending on the heads I can come up with FOR SURE & I was afraid those where on the rowdy side. Got a lead last week on another early 70's jet boat with the 460 in it. The boat is thrashed but it should have DOVE-C's in it. Won't know until I put eyes on it for sure. If that falls through, I got another lead on a a set of C9's & I'm hitting a couple more wrecking yards here as well that I know have some more of these Fords in them for the just-in-case. As for pistons, I was going to go with Sealed Power flats. Found a sets on EBay for an ok price out of CA free shipping. The block I'm using is a D1VE, it's out of that 77 motorhome so it's using the older castings that didn't have to comply with emissions standards and I'll use those rods. The motorhome only had around 40K on the clock and everything inside it is whistle clean, so other than a piston swap, I think the bottom end is rock solid. Again... thanks a million for the help on this Oly, send me another sticker and I'll stick it on the valve cover with the words "everything that works on this is Oly". I'll put mine on the other side to claim everything that comes apart... lololol.

Morning BareRose! DOVE heads are about as good as it gets for a stock 460 head. Intake flow pretty good, exhaust sides some ports work. C9VE work good with a little work. Happy hunting Bare!

Hey Kim, DOVE heads would be your best budget option. Some raised floor exhaust flange adapters will help fix the poor flow in the exhaust. Good luck on your Quest for DOVE's Kim. I am excited for your build. Tunnel Tam 460👍👍 Take care, Ed.

I'll keep a look out for a set for you. I had a set of C8VE on a 1968 429 that I had. I wish I would have kept the motor. I've used the 1988-1991 fuel injected piston in 460 builds before. They work good even with the D3 heads... of course I know you want higher compression than 9:1 which is what you would get with D3's. I'm with you on the budget builds. That's what I'm doing on this Mustang I'm putting together. Everything so far has either been on clearance at Rockauto, or used, or some parts have been free!

In my neighborhood we solved the problem of low octane fuel there is a local airport for small airplanes and we buy there gas .yes it cost's a bit more but it's worth it for the higher octane you need .

The D3VE heads and block would be lucky to be 7to1 compression.l have measured. With 030 cut on the deck and 030 cut on the head. The CR. Will be 8.2 to 1. Cut the intake 050. 10:30

You are right on target with that tunnel ram losing horsepower with low compression you'd be better off using the stock 2 ton cast iron intake with a 1 inch open spacer when it comes to low compression ,but you hit all the points with this one barerose you always know what your doing with this stuff when it comes to getting power out of it, I do have a set of dove heads that I'm not using with 2 ports ported 😂let me know if there's anything I can do to help you with this Ed's machine has my phone number, enjoyed your video you had me laughing 😃 😂

Hey there Terry great to see you man! Sorry this is so late coming. Yeah trying do this without compression is going to be tricky at best. I would be very interested in buying those heads from you but I imagine the shipping alone for BBF Heads is insanely high. Those things are beyond heavy... Lololol

This one came out of a motorhome so fell into the RV/marine (smogless) cat, but the downside is it's a motorhome Torquer, built to come all in at about 4500 rpm using whatever octane fuel you can stuff into it. But like you said, a good foundation to build off of for sure.
