+Kray Zee Depends...harder isn't always better, the harder is a protection the more energy transfers to the body, and if the impact is very strong the material becomes so hard that it shatters like glass.

there are people who crashed in normal jeans and jacket and walked away....... this vid and tons of forum-talk proves time over time again that thickness and a certain amount of "starting hardness" is crucial to real life protection. Like he said, D30 is still mostly looking into getting the protectors as thin as possible instead of delivering even better protection than already available. Well, the stuff is too thin EVER to give decend protection. also, true, it gets "stiff" and holds the impact after certain distance of impact... But how about impactenergydispersion? you can be sure a thicker protector with a thin, harder scale works best. they have a natural way of spreading the impact over a lager surface .... I have the tryonic backprotector and it is made this way. It's "just" a harder scale with EPS faced towards you spline... I can tell you from 6 (thats SIX) hard crashes over 160km-h on the track , banging on the tarmac, a concrete wall and metalfence that I NEVER EVER FELT ANYTHING of pain on my back!!! Sure it's "thick" but this is as good as it gets. Why do you think helmets dont use sastec or similar?

dude, he showed you it doesnt work well, it works, but only if applied on the same thickness and they appearently dont want too second thing is its too unstable when not in a crash it's a "fluid", your helmet would be moving around a lot.... not something I want my helmet to do

3 years late to this comment but these D3O pads all have certification based on how much force it transmits from an impact so you can find the actual numbers. It’s true that the thin pads don’t protect enough to protect you in a bad crash but they do a surprisingly good job at stopping force transmission and it’s enough to protect you in low speed crashes, and it’s far better than a foam pad of the same thickness and it’s also more flexible. For going around town they’re great, since you can hide them in casual clothing. Basically these thin D3O pads are equivalent to substantially thicker foam pads common in old motorcycle gear. On highways and stuff though it’s smart to get the thicker pads since they’re not too bulky either and they do a great job absorbing impact. My personal experience is I fell off my bike at 50kmh and smacked my knee on a curb wearing rev it jeans with the thinnest “D3O” armour, it was bruised pretty bad but it didn’t have any lasting injury. I’m sure it would’ve been messed up without the thin armour, and I’m also sure it’d be messed up if I was going much faster.

The thinner armour doesn’t completely harden in an impact. It’s still slightly flexible. This is because it has additives to keep it in a solid shape rather than a liquid, and also becuase the interactions between the molecules still don’t make a totally hard material. A thicker armour will definitely give you more stiffness in a crash, and since it’s very slightly flexible even under impact it’ll help disperse the force across the inner surface better than a thin armour. The force is transmitted below the impacting surface in a wide triangle, and a thicker armour will make the base of that triangle wider which therefore spreads out that impact across your body more. If D3O wasn’t non Newtonian that triangle would be much skinner and sharper, not spreading that force out nearly as much.

E so do you have to use both? in a fall you fall and slide. no one will choose to desk because they are using a d3o
