It's kind of ironic that a video detailing the cancelation and likely ideas for season two of D4 is what finally gave me a sense of closure for this game. You knocked it out of the park with this one, I learned a ton.

This was a extremely cathartic video , D4 is one of those games that hit every beloved fictional storytelling techniques that I see in all of my favorite works of art . This definitely made the “D4 season 2 may never come out “ pill easier to swallow even when we saw something like Deadly Premonition 2 exist .

I forgot this game existed, please, let this wound stay closed. This game is, in my opinion, swery's true magnum opus, that never really had the chance of achieving it's full potential. Everything about this game oozes with style and charm, and i hate that it will never be finished.

That beginning quote is so damn powerful. As someone who has coped with depression after personal failures, I can't imagine living through those in Japan. Swery sounds like a really cool guy for going against those negative traditions. Great stuff Hikiko!

After playing through this again recently, I really do miss all of the characters in the game. Each one is filled with so much charm and character that's hard to find. Here's to hoping that some day we get a new episode and maybe some closure on the series.

This was the most attractive, functional and polished Swery65 game ever made and its just as insane and quirky as Deadly Premonition... and it ends on a sequel bate and Swery himself said he'll never work on it again. GD it...

Amanda being a cat is evident from various ways, the most obvious being the QTE freeze frame of Amanda with a rat in her mouth, trying to scratch David, her eyes are flashing yellow like Jackson's in the Thriller MV but it's also how cat's eyes "flash" against sunlight or other light sources when obscured in shadow. But that's not allm beyond her heterochromia as a cat, Amanda looks like a mix of Peggy and David, as if David projects the visage of what he imagines his unborn child would be like.

Your best video yet. Bittersweet ending that's made me genuinely regret this series has ended prematurely.

It sounds like 'アクセスゲーム割に違う答えしたくない答え' which could mean something like 'I don't want to give the wrong answer with Access Games in mind' but I'm not confident in my translation of the second half of that sentence. He definitely says Access Games at the start though. What interview/livestream is this from and do they mention Access Games anywhere else in the video? EDIT: Found video, it's "The Good Life Last 2 hours Celebrate With SWERY" on the White Owls official channel. Access Games are mentioned earlier on in the context of a Spy Fiction question and D4 is brought up a couple times. When asked if he could make a sequel to any of the games he has made, D4 is his first answer (as well as a third The Last Blade game). Overall it really seems like Access Games is the major obstacle, and (in 2018 at least) he hadn't lost interest in D4.

played this game a 7 years ago, the first year of gamepass. it was on there, i had redeemed the $1 for a month deal for GP. really liked this game, its really strange but in a good way. its like a telltale game with a really unique flair to it. i still randomly remember this game just because of how random it is, it pretty memorable to say the least.

Swery is a mad man. He put two German game journalists into the game as gangster/junkies because they made Deadly Premonition mainstream (kind of). They did a playthrough that was legendary and is now partially lost because of an show/company buyout. The whole thing happened like 2011. I found them random in the game and literally screamed. Swery is amazing.

You know the feel when you started following a series, be it a movie/comic book/game, and it doesn't have an ending due to cancellation and the thing stuck with your mind for years like an unresolved guilt? Your analysis, the shout out from DP2 and Suehiro's statement on David and Olivia's future have brought an end to such feeling of mine that I have for D4.

Finally finished this one and man, what a video! You aught to be real proud of this one! I think what makes D4 more depressing than most cancelations is that we actually did get a fairly big chunk of the story, but had it cut short due to a few unfortunate circumstances. Still, I'm glad Swery has been getting a lot of work recently, and this game wasn't the death nail in his career. While Deadly Premonition 2 might not have been super stellar, his work on The Missing and what I've seen of "The Good Life" (Its one of the three games I have actually backed on Kickstarter) gives me hope that there still a place for insane game auetors out there.

Well there were plenty of reasons why DP2 would never happen, since Access held that property. And now they don't anymore and it did happen. Maybe there are people who can facilitate the transaction. Money may be a big problem, but then D4 seems much more focused in scope than DP games so it shouldn't be extremely expensive. I personally don't particularly care about spoilers, and i think SWERY has it in him to surprise anyone regardless of anything that you've seen, heard or thought. But also my spoiler memory lasts approximately 10 minutes. And when it comes back to me, it seems to me like it was my own thoughts all along. Makes me feel smarter than i really am. And also it's about the journey more so than the destination. I only played D2 on PC with an Xbox360 gamepad, and i though the QTE sequences were the most fun and best designed i have ever seen. They just have that particular FLOW to them. And it was shaping up into something really interesting, and then it just died with no immediate hope of being finished. I would never blame SWERY, it's a victim of circumstances - he was doing an excellent job as a writer/director. Ultimately i'm just as much excited to see something new from him rather than resurrecting an old unfinished business. One other game that came out half-finished and i would like to see finished would be Anachronox. There's a story of its failure too, and the key word there is Daikatana. The current owners of the property are Square Enix Global, via acquisition of EIDOS, and they don't want to part with it, but they don't want to produce anything either. I'd say a giant faceless corporate entity to which it occurs that selling off a dead property and having someone ELSE potentially make money with it would be a loss, while letting it rot at least doesn't seem lose them money on paper, is much more of an obstacle than a bunch of people who have personal gripes with each other. Hey Hikiko, have you played Shadow of Memories (aka Shadow of Destiny in US/Canada)? Might be your thing. Came to me while thinking of The Good Life, for no reason whatsoever, no similarity.

I started D4 a couple of days ago and got to the end of Episode one (it's been on my bucket list for yeras). Despite being a fan of SWERY, I somehow missed that the game was never actually finished! It really put a damper on my playthrough as I was really getting into. But thus video has filled that void a bit, great work 👍

Thank you for this excellently done vid. I ended up here because I just now finished the game for the first time. I went to look into what happened and why there wasn’t another season. Such a shame, I was really into this games story and unique features. The worst part is it ends just when it starts to get crazy.

I got this game when I first got my Xbox one and Kinect, and I somehow found out about it and got it. This game is actually so fascinating and weird but I absolutely loved it. SOOOO disappointed when it was canceled and realized we will never get an ending. Years later and I’m still disappointed.

Okay, i might know another small hint as to what season 2 could have added. That being a Memento, Antonios eye. This does make sense, otherwise why would they show the eye rolling and touching Davids hand? Antonio wasn't able to "vanish" or "move" anywhere because he was beat up too the point of passing out and its even said that the eyes was evidence (i think). Also it was also shown that there would have been a new character if season 2 existed, you probably know him, Douglas Lysander, a person working for the DEA.

this is lovely, but I'd like to propose something: he DID change the past already. it's proven by there being several versions of him. there was a version of peggy that died in that lake, and one that was saved by david travelling back in time. one version of him stayed and raised her like his own, but another version of him, one that does not know this chain of events, meets adult peggy and falls in love with her. a bit convoluted, but with a film geek like swery, and oldboy-esque twist seems just in the realm of possibilities. i had also just assumed from the start that "D" was none other than David himself. just... an alternate version of him that knew the truth. so maybe peggy found out and shot him in order to save him from the pain of realizing.

Surprised you didn’t talk about that Little Peggy was pregnant before her death. She talks about her pregnancy in her letters, like the one in 1:09:03, and you can see Peggy’s baby bump in multiple flashbacks throughout the game, including her death and the flashback with Amanda in 1:02:50. This was a big shock for me as I never even noticed Peggy’s baby bump throughout the game and brings up the question of why David himself doesn’t seem to bring up his unborn child. Perhaps David possibly forgot his unborn child’s existence due to his amnesia and/or your own theory that David had Little Peggy take Real Blood possibly causing the child’s death in utero before Peggy’s own death (also tying into your theory that Peggy was the one who shot David in the head, doing so out of anger that David caused their child’s death) and David made himself forget about Peggy’s pregnancy due to the trauma and guilt. Or, a darker take, the reason David doesn’t bring up Little Peggy’s pregnancy was that he didn’t care about his unborn child’s death.

Wow, just started watching this channel because of the CBOMB stuff but I really love your Swery Files videos! I've only played Deadly Premonition 1 and 2, but I want more Swery weirdness, and this game looks really interesting. Would you say this is still worth playing on sale, even if I know the story isn't going anywhere? Can't wait for more!

I think if we get enough engagement out there about D4 we can bring it back. that's a big if though. I discovered this series through memes of it on tiktok. If we can push engagement and sales maybe even do a petition we could see a breakthrough in SWERY being allowed to finish it. Hell just getting a big name streamer to play through it could be enough to bring it back if it sparks enough petitions to bring it back. This is all a very big if though and would require a ton of work from the community :/
