I was on the Moray Mint tour a few yrs ago. Got off at Edinburgh Wav,caught the next train to Haymarket so I could video RSG blasting through, got it recorder but stopped filming after the train passed. Then the guy on the tannoy shouted "attention all passengers on platform 4,there is no smoking anywhere in the station" He emerged & said it's about fu**ing time they got shot of they things! I asked "what did you think that was" He thought it was a 37 with buggered injectors! Next train through was mine,to Bathgate. It didn't quite get out of the tunnel, some 15 year old lassie pulled the communication cord, she thought the '158 was on fire as it was full of smoke. ROFL

Well, I liked it, it was interesting to hear the sound in the distance and see the engine working hard as it emerged. But certainly also a reminder that the two-stroke Deltics were smoky, a bit like motorbikes. Remember it was 1950s technology and they had a much higher power-to-weight ratio than other contemporary diesels and revolutionised the East Coast main line. With electrics all the hard work is done in the power station and you don't see it.

I don't usually leave comments but it seems as though this video has been 'Algorithmed' (as I like to call it). I just thought i'd give a quick PSA for those of you who might be a tad confused by what you see and feel a bit mislead. So for those of you who don't have an interest in railways, that locomotive is a Deltic Express passenger Diesel Locomotive built in the 1950's. It is pulling a charter passenger train and appears to have been held up for a signal check hence why the pitch of engine dramatically increases just prior to appearance of the engine (as I suspect that the driver is putting the power down to regain speed.). The large amount of smoke is due to the age of locomotive and is probably residue oil and fuel left in the cylinders being burnt off as the power ramps up again. Yes I do feel a bit sorry for those persons on the platform exposed to such fumes, but it can happen anywhere and i'm sure since it will probably be the only time that year that young man or his mother will encounter that locomotive in that scenario putting out that much smoke. I'm pretty certain that the young man in the pram will be fine and not develop any long term health conditions, the human body is a good deal tougher than some people give it credit for. Now I have read through the comments and noticed some 'brave' railway enthusiasts going through the comments and 'correcting' people who they think have the wrong idea. Those 'corrections' are usually in the form of downright insults and in some cases personal attacks and portrait those of us in hobby in a bad light. So perhaps the correct response would be a polite explanation and not telling someone to quote 'fuck off' when the talk about the fumes being polluting(and i'm sorry to break it to you lads/lasses that is polluting smoke right their can't deny that.). So just to cap off an finish (what must without question be the longest comment i've ever written) people on both sides need to chill out and either just sit back and enjoy a Deltic doing what it was built to do, or if you find this video not to your taste leave and find something else to watch instead.

There was a time in the 60's when I would probably have had all 22 Deltic locomotives ticked off in my Ian Allen locomotives guide book. My parents' house was over looking the LNER and I could look from my bedroom window up the line towards New Southgate station along well over half a mile or so of track. For their time, the Deltics were pretty amazing machines.
