Circles is the sixth and final studio album by American rapper and singer Mac Miller. It was released posthumously on January 17, 2020, by REMember Music and Warner Records, and was being worked on by Miller before his death in September 2018. Production was completed by Jon Brion.
Swimming, the fifth studio album by American hip hop artist Mac Miller, was released on August 3, 2018, by REMember Music and Warner Records. Miller intended the album as a cohesive work meant to mark a certain era of his life, a trend that he began on 2016's The Divine Feminine. Inspired by his work on the film score for Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Miller hired Jon Brion as a producer for Swimming. Swimming received positive reviews from music critics, with Mosi Reeves of Rolling Stone saying that Miller "has finally abandoned his frat-rap reputation for good".
At the time of his death, Miller was "well into" the recording process of Circles. It was intended to be a companion album to Swimming, with "two different styles complementing each other, completing a circle" and the concept being "swimming in circles". Brion, who worked with Miller on the album, completed production "based on his time and conversations" with Miller. Swimming and Circles were planned to be the first two installments in a trilogy of albums, where the last piece would have been "a pure hip-hop record", as described by Brion.

Circles has to be one of the greatest posthumous albums ever. Itʼs so perfectly executed by Mac Miller & Jon Brion. Huge props to Jon Brion for putting so many beautiful sounds on this album, Iʼd love to create beautiful sounds like this too one day, Iʼd love to create beautiful music like this.

I can’t think of a better one off the top of my head tbh. Everything Jon Brion did on here is perfectly tasteful, feels like it could’ve been finished before Mac passed, although it wasn’t. I’ve never thought that after listening to a posthumous album, not even close to it really.

I loved this reaction. My mom died from brain cancer a year before Mac did and she used to LOVE "I'll Be There" from Best Day Ever. We listened to it every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday while I drove her to chemo. I slowly turned her into a Mac fan so there is even more of an emotional attachment there. Obviously, I was devastated when she passed so that made Swimming bittersweet when it dropped, but it was cool to be able to tweet Mac about how much I loved the album...then he passed and I was devastated again. So this album...man. It's deeply personal to me. As soon as he said "Well..." I started bawling. I still cry a lot of times and I have no idea why I'm spilling this all in KZfaq comments like a weirdo but thank you guys so much for your reactions. I really enjoy them. The closer “Once A Day” intentionally ends with an unresolved chord that only gets fixed when you play the intro and title track “Circles” afterwards, creating a loop and resolved chord in musical theory. Basically the album loops back into itself, creating a full Circle. Dissect Podcast made a video explaining this in greater detail, but I think it’s little things like this that make me respect Jon Brion even more. Props to him for beautifully crafting the production, and RIP to Mac Miller. ❤️

I became a mac fan from listening with a 15 year old that was like my nephew. I played a song from swimming and he was all excited I knew of him too. It became our thing, to listen to mac together. He had a hard life, a lot of trauma and things no kid should experience. We were close and when he stayed with us we often played and talked about music. He passed away after I had just seem him in an accidental suicide. Had just jammed to mac with him in my car. It was awful. This album got me through the grief (not that it ever goes away). Surf is my favorite song and I teared up when your dad said he wanted that line tattooed on him. I do as well- right above the tattoo I got to represent my friend who had passed way too soon. I enjoyed seeing your dad become a mac fan- his music really is beautiful. Its so nice to read all the comments too on everyone discovering mac and what he has helped everyone through. Good News is the most perfect song I’ve ever listened to. The instrumentation is absolutely gorgeous and perfectly sets the stage for some of the most heart wrenching lyrics I’ve ever heard. The way he beautifully alludes to the feelings of depression and also death simultaneously is amazing. It’s endlessly relatable to anyone who has ever felt down or fed up in life, but it’s also intensely relatable to people with depression. Like you said, it is like a gift, like an open letter to everyone just saying “I feel the same, we can get through this together, there’s no rush to get to the finish line”. The song saved my life in my darkest times, and it will remain my favorite song of all time for a very long time I can imagine.

Hand me downs is so underrated. Incredible song. Glad he loved it. BTW there is an interview with Jon Brion and Zane Lowe about circles and jons involvement in it. It’s only like 10 minutes. Your dad also points out being able to hear things in the background with the mic. That’s a common theme. There’s actually a lot of sounds on faces like the studio door creaking open and someone accidentally hitting a tambourine etc. mac never cuts it out, and it brings a realness.

I listened to Mac Miller a bit when I was younger, but never was a huge fan. But after he died I started listening to his music more, including this album when it came out, and it all just feels like a musical hug. This man was so warm and loving.. and it shows in his music. Gone, but never forgotten.. RIP Mac Miller.
