The Weeknd is one of the best vocalists ever, let alone just this generation. The super bowl is a tough way to be introduced to his voice I’d say. The mixing was off and that has nothing to do with his vocal ability. One of the few artists who sing live with little back track. It’s incredible to witness. There’s a difference between using auto tune as a crutch or using is aesthetically. I think older generations have a hard time grasping that. Though he’s a better singer now then he was 10 years ago, house of balloons or any of the mixtapes really will give a way better idea of the raw vocal skill.

Can't you believe this Album didn't get a Grammy Nomination and Blinding Lights the BIGGEST song in Music history and of 2020 wasn't even nominated for Song of the Year.

the grammys are unfortunately super corrupt. they didn’t nominate him since he chose performing at the superbowl rather than the grammys…

Your dad has good music knowledge. For the record, on Scared to Live, Abel did not even know he was borrowing from Elton John at first. He and Elton talked about it at a Christmas party and Elton was super flattered. BTW Elton is a MASSIVE Weekend fan and they even wrote a song together that Elton has talked about. It may or may not be released at some point.

Honestly, you should’ve started him on House of Balloons. When I was first getting into Abel, listening to trilogy first really eased me into his sound. Also the narrative and story behind After Hours is really important to the listening experience. You don’t really appreciate the greatness of this album until you realize the story.

It's tough to pick a starting point to introduce people to The Weeknd. I think doing it this way with After Hours first, if you guys go through his whole discog and your Dad is open to it, After Hours will hit so much harder on a 2nd listen after hearing everything else. I'm looking forward to seeing more from you guys!

At the end of the review with what Dad was saying, I think he'd like the mixtapes given how intimate they are. It's dark still but really brings where the content of this album comes from. That being said, hell naw I'm not unsubscribing. This is something I wish I could do with my Dad, were he still living, so I get to live vicariously thru your content. Great work as usual, and here's to 100k in 2023!

I'd preferred Dad get introduced to Abel thru HoB rather than this to get more of the growth and the storyline itself from the mixtapes and Kissland until now but I'll take it! Dad mentioned it when he said something along the lines of this being the intro of Abel to someone else. Still, with this being The Weeknd's biggest album to date, it's not too bad. Dawn FM next, since it's the sequel?

Love the reaction! I understand where your dad is coming from really wanting to hear his actual voice. You should have him react to the vevo performances he did of a few of these songs. He did one to "Faith", "In Your Eyes" (with Kenny G) and "Alone Again" where he's singing everything without backing vocals or effects. Imo, they sound even better than the album versions!

I really enjoy seeing your dad being honest with his thoughts and I have noticed that like with this vulnerability that the Weekend shows it is interesting how he is able to still challenge the listener in certain aspects of the music. I felt like since this album really opened up on this character that seeped into what is actually happening in his life over the past years it can be quite interesting seeing what your dad will think about Dawn FM which exudes confidence and clarity in a ton of tracks whereas the distortion of After Hours makes that far away feeling from people or people understanding what he was going through battling many issues as a known introverted person. Nonetheless, I am hyped to see what your dad think of Dawn FM that has absolute well mastered music and track continuation and vocal clarity and easy understanding stories in songs.

It’s always ok to not like something! But isn’t it also great that The Weeknd challenges a listener? It means he’s doing something right. I sometimes wonder if he pushes his vocals back because he hasn’t had a lot of confidence? (I know he’s quite shy when it comes to interviews etc), I may be very wrong there- but through his discography I’ve always felt like he struggles to be vulnerable and he masks that with his ‘character’… but in this album he is so vulnerable and I wonder if that’s partly why he seems so far away… almost like someone talking to you on the phone from a distance... I don’t know if that’s a silly observation or not but it’s just something I’ve wondered since he seems so much more confident now and I think the new album really reflects that, I can feel his confidence oozing now.

This is going to be a very rash generalization and I of course mean no harm by it, but I find that a lot of folks from Dad's generation seem to have a hard time with music that comes off to them as "complaining" or "whining" about their problems. A lot of music from previous generations was rarely as emotive and raw about personal issues, usually more focused on positivity or social issues, or when getting personal a la Pink Floyd usually done so in more abstract terms. And certainly I think successive generations of music were influenced by a sort of infatuation with anti-heroes in our media especially in the late 90s and 2000s, and that definitely adds to a bit of self-loathing that can be hard to swallow for previous generations that just kind of want them to suck it up, shut up and just sing. But it very much echoes the divide about mental health between generations to me - with one generation often saying to suck it up (though I've very much seen that attitude start to shift in the older generations) and the newer generation almost being too open about it - like yeah we know you're depressed but you dont need to buy t-shirts that say you're sad as fuck or whatever, it's just kind of cringe. So I think Abel's raw open bad guy that hates himself schtick comes off as "Well fuck you have it bad but you didnt have it as bad as me" or "So what, we all have problems" to one generation, and it's "OMG I SUCK TOO" and "YEAH I'M BAD AND I LIKE IT AS WELL" to the other generation, so I fully get the disconnect. I think if one can get past that weird generational divide what you've got is a guy that both hates and loves himself and has the voice of an angel and the intentions of a demon and it's pretty interesting to me. And frankly I love Dawn FM even more because it's so much more nihilistic and so much more about our own mortality and the fears and regrets that come with it if you don't love yourself, which means it's about growth as much as it's about existentialism.
@putyouon

I completely agree with your dad, I felt the same way when I listened to the Weeknd. He is an artist with very, very catchy music, but what your dad is trying to say is that he doesn't have the depth from the classic styles he's trying to bring back to life. Your dad's soul just doesn't connect to the music - does it make sense? I grew up listening to 70's and 80's music and if I were to make a comparison, the Weekend's depth just isn't there for me. But I completely understand his fanbase as well. Most of them probably grew up with Weeknd's music, and "reminiscing" is the closest thing you can get to "depth". So both parties are right. Pat your dad on the back for keeping it real.
@BerserkRain

I am wondering what you mean by depth exactly like storytelling or like lyrics of what he is saying? Just interested to see the other side because I like his stuff and I would like to see what you mean because I like seeing other point of views.

@@BerserkRain I think it’s subjective for everyone here, for me it’s the sound and emotion in the music as a whole. But I’m rather critical with this type of music in general, as I don’t consider it an evolution from the 70’s-80’s like I do with the transition from rock to rap. The one project I enjoyed from him though is House of Balloons. That one hits different.
@BerserkRain
@BerserkRain Жыл бұрын
@@danpirau3969 mmm I feel what your saying and yea his earlier work had certain depth and emotion as a whole that probably connects to wider audience in moments. Compared to those who have possibly been fans for awhile who know his work and career closer maybe or that could be just be off to what you are explaining. Now tbh his newest album has more depth as whole but his persona or character sounds like they have more confidence which is interesting. Even with his maybe different feel then other artists I like seeing someone trying something new or not what is expected of today's music at times.
@danpirau3969
@danpirau3969 Жыл бұрын
@@BerserkRain I feel like his earlier work had most of himself, the beginning of the creation of his style. It sounds very unique and different to me, and I like that. If I happen to listen to something unique that also happens to be good, while at the same time connecting emotionally and/or situationally with it at that point in my life, the music itself becomes part of my memories. I start having a soft spot for it and I subjectively perceive it as better than I normally probably should. The thing is, I don't feel the same way about After Hours for example, because I've already listened to tracks in the past that I perceive as similar, and I have my memories with those. I'm not being close-minded when I say that I don't see anything special in it, but I am probably subconsciously trying to be too objective. I also can't be less objective at the moment, as I'm not going through anything in my life that deeply connects with the music. But I do understand the subjectivity regarding any individual listening, any artist and any genre of music.
