Agreed, and that's how metal was back in the 70s, early 80s. then fashion crept in, then elitists, and now you have the bullshit that we have today. it's a shame really. these guys are just doing their thing, soaking in influences and creating something unique rather than choosing to fit within prepackaged genres. anyone who gets personally angry about this has much deeper issues, mostly stemming from jealousy (although they will vehemently deny it). These elitists tend to praise anything that is unique from the status quo of modern society, but only if you follow the underground's rules of how metal you're supposed to be. When you start looking within the metal community, they are just as critical of anything that doesn't fit the models of THEIR status quo of how metal should be. It is 100% hypocrisy, but they are too far stuck up their own elitist asses even see it. It would be pretty funny if it weren't so damned pathetic.

I love me some extreme metal/music but I really respect what Deafheaven are doing for the genre, it's exciting, it's still fairly new (yes I know Alcest did blackgaze first) and I can't wait for the boundaries they will be pushing. I fucking love Emperor, Bathory, Darkthrone, etc. But fuck the elitists/extremists fucks in the metal community. Whatever happened to having a good time jamming to your favourite songs? Oh wait, people would rather attack a fucking band on the type music they play lol

I'm guessing so he could start actually writing by himself until he got band members. That way he could have the song mostly worked out or at least a rough draft. When the drummer and bass player finally showed up is probably when they fine tuned it to what you hear on record.
