My dad passed from Ewing sarcoma when I was 5, I wish so much he was around to have seen me and my brother grow up..but thst being said my mom taught me how to be tough. She had to raise two children while dealing with the death of her partner. She didn't have a man to fix the sink, the toilet, to mow the lawn, or to fix the car (well she had my uncle who helped her and taught her a lot) but she raised me up to know i could do what ever I put my mind to (my brother unfortunately went down a path of destruction. I love him, but he is an *sshole)

When our youngest was born we had been told that he had a 75% chance of being downs. He wasnt. But he was born with cerebral palsy , ADHD and autism. We knew from the start he was unique. But having 3 other boys, 2 were 20 at the time, we knew how to deal with this. We did the same thing as he dad. We called him gimp and talked about his one leg being shorter and all the other things. We were kind and living to him but explained ppl are jerks. Now when other ppl say derogatory things he comes back with 'my sister has better insults..." that will stop alot of young men. The world is not gonna be easy on them. We have to show them to have tough skin. So it doesn't puncture through to the softness inside and mess it all up.

watching my dad go through chemo were really my earliest memories of him, it absolutely does something to you. I remember my dad always being sick or hospitalized due to a returning brain tumor. It returned a total of five times, the fifth time he didn't beat it. And watching him decay the last few years of his life was something else. I only got 10 years of a healthy father, which is more than some ever get, but not enough for me. I understand what Brad is talking about, I know a lot of people do. I am glad he got to keep his father, and I hope his father continues to stay on this earth for him for as long as possible.

I can relate. I was lucky to have my Dad for a long time. The last 20 years he had cancer 11 times. Some of it was easy enough to battle. A couple skin surgeries. When he got lung cancer he was not healthy enough for chemo. It was immunotherapy years of it. He tried every new treatment that came out. He said that he was a Guinea pig. He answered thousands of questions. He really liked the idea that maybe he could help someone else. Now they are giving the treatment a go ahead. I think our Dad's kicked cancers ass. They never gave up and wanted to stay with us. Sending you love from a stranger who has gone through something similar. We had tough Dads. Xoxo

What a proud moment. My only goal in life was to make my Dad proud, 7 years ago at the age of 39, my Dad told me he was proud of me for the 1st time. I'll never forget that moment in my life, and for the rest of my life I will continue to make him proud, even after the day comes when he'll no longer be here, because if not for my Dad, I would never be the man I am today.

My father and I were never close. The only time I saw my father proud of me was when I got into a fight with my cousin (he's almost a decade older) and I knocked him out. What about Saturday Night Live in the mid-1990s? Season 20 wasn't exactly kind to him then. Well, outside of the occasional sketch where he did his impression of Christopher Walken. Then Mohr got fired for plagiarizing a sketch (though he would have been let go anyway since Lorne had to overhaul the show because of how bad it was doing at the time and a lot of cast members either got fired or left because they hated working on the show. I know Janeane Garofalo was one of them. Fortunately, Norm Macdonald stayed on until season 23).

That's how I am with my kids. And nothing makes you prouder when you walk back into the school you swore you'd never come back to. You do the walk of shame to the principals office (where I spent a lot of my youth) because your DAUGHTER got caught beating the crap out of a football player for being a pervert to her. I defended her and said no wonder your team never wins when the star quarterback gets his ass handed to him by a girl. I took her for tacos when we left

Out of my friends I'm the old school dad. I was raised by a beat down dad so I've got no problem punishing my kids. My oldest said that some of my punishments were cruel and unusual, she would've preferred a beating because it would've been over and done with in a snap. The worst was the nickel. You make the child face the wall and hold the nickel with their nose for a determined amount of time and if they dropped it they had to start over. But I'm an asshole so I would do things to make them drop the nickel. My son once stood for an hour and a half because I kept making him drop the nickel. But my kids are well behaved and always willing to help unlike my friends future inmates
