Hi, i'm just big fan of your work and i really happy about this video. I'm working in Republic of Korean army as fire arm repairer sergeant. I just want give you quick feedback and tip for anyone own this gun. First of all, what you mentioned range adjustment at the rear sight is actually windage adjustment that engraved numbers on it is for zeroing purpose. And every korean firearms are named sequence adopted by army and developed so very first developed original korean firearm is designated as the K1 And next improvement is K1A that changed flash hider, recoil spring assembly And actually you mentioned K1c is just K1A with picatinny hand guard made from Dong-iin optical And quick tip of using this gun. This gun is working perfectly with M193 round if use SS109 round with this gun, the bullet tip will flip while flying to target(same rifling thread m16a1. The K2 rifles rifling is smiler with the m16a2) And safety problem of this gun is if you're very unlucky, recoil spring assembly that holding rear of this gun very rarely chance to pop out into shooter's eye(this problem is fixed at K1A, but i don't know why this model is not fixed) so i'm gonna advice for shooting this gun, just grab this gun properly. If you or anyone want ask any question about this gun. I will happily help. And again, thanks for your work!

I am a ROK Marine and I have used this rifle. Actually, K1 was created to fill the need for shorter barrel, compact version of firearm compared to M16A1 that was widely being used in Korea back then. Essentially, it was made as a SMG (and accidentally ahead of the time by keeping 5.56 on SMG instead of typical 9mm). It is widely used in armored, engineers, recon, SpecOps, etc MOS that requires working in tight space or in stealth. There has been many voices in SpecOp and Recon community in Korea about need for a new rifle. They issued us mod kits to put rails and foregrip and all that accessory but now transitioning to a whole new rifle. They are currently issuing newly built K2C (Carbine). From my experience, I liked my K2 better than K1. Both are very reliable. I never had my K2 fail on me even after being under water, mud, desert sand, snow, etc. And it is dead accurate. K1 suffers a bit in accuracy compared to K2 but it is still a great SMG that can even be put in carbine category and compete with carbines. Problem I had was the less stable buttstock thingy on K1. But a lot of guys in recon and special forces replace the default buttstock with modern retractable ones. Fun fact : you can use K1 upper on K2 lower vice versa. It works perfectly fine.

Seeing an AR with a traditional bolt handle on the side of the gun makes me happy.
@jameshealy4594
@jameshealy4594 6 жыл бұрын
Centreline charging always made sense to me, It's very sealed up because it doesn't need a giant slot, no messing around about which hand to use, nothing to get in the way on the side of the gun, no reciprocating parts (I know that is either good or bad depending on perspective). All that said I have zero time on ARs, so for those that do, what is it about the side charger that you prefer/what am I missing about the central handle?
@dissociativealeks
@dissociativealeks 6 жыл бұрын
AgamemnonTWC personally I just find the big horizontal charging handle super sexy
@AgamemnonTWC
@AgamemnonTWC 6 жыл бұрын
James Healy My criticisms of it are mainly that it's weird to charge without dismounting from the shoulder and, though there are replacement handles that remove this issue, the handle is awful. It's uncomfortable, hard to grip, and small. The small part especially contributes to the problem of being unable to charge without dismounting the rifle, because it's nearly impossible in my experience to get a good grip on just one side of it, but it's very awkward to get the hand around both sides without pulling the gun away. I know that can be resolved by an aftermarket handle, but in its stock form it sucks. It's just a terribly unergonomic charging handle for the gun that everyone claims is the ultimate ergonomic tacti-cool rifle. Why bother with super ergonomic grips and safeties and stocks and what have you if you still have to deal with a charging system that, in use, feels more like a badly designed bolt action than a modern rifle? I have not tried it, but from looks alone I'd honestly prefer the original charging system, where there was a handle on top that looked like a second trigger (like a FAMAS if I remember right). The issue then is that you may not be able to get a gloved finger in the guard to charge it in very cold weather, which I believe is why it was changed in military service. But, ergonomically, that isn't a bad method in my opinion. However, that also necessitates some structure on the top of the rifle, which means your sights will be higher, the gun effectively taller, and it'll be weird to mount modern optics on it (which I believe is why the carry handle/charger guard has largely been left off of modern AR variants). However, considering I'm right handed as are the vast majority of the people I know, I don't mind one bit having a nice big knobby handle on the right side of the rifle. If I was left handed or designing something for military use where left handers would have to use it, I'd probably be happier to deal with the drawbacks of the AR charging handle, but as a right handed person who finds the charging of nearly every other military rifle perfectly comfortable, the AR's annoys me.
@AgamemnonTWC
@AgamemnonTWC 6 жыл бұрын
Laird Cummings Interesting. It probably comes from having shot mostly older rifles (I've honestly shot much more black powder than smokeless), but the right hand just feels to me like the natural hand for charging.
@junkersintutus4282
@junkersintutus4282 6 жыл бұрын
AgamemnonTWC As a righty who isn't a soldier, I much prefer charging with my non-trigger hand like on HKs and FALs. But for soldiers and people moving with the weapon at the ready keeping your fore-grip hand supporting the fotward weight of the weapon is much more realistic than the mechanically disadvanteged trigger hand.

My father was fond of (Career LAPD retired Captain) collecting military firearms during the 70s, 80s and stopped around the time of the ban in California in 1989 (California was first then the feds followed a few years later). He bought this model (K1) and about a week later he bought a K2 (1988). He purchased both at a store in Long Beach California called GEMCO. It was like a Walmart type store but you had to be a member. The rifles now resides in Arizona in my brother's safes.

Hey Ian great video. I'm stationed in Korea and work with ROK military. Interesting fact is the first K1s had M3 style muzzle cones then swapped to CAR-15 style muzzle boosters later. S&T is looking for sales to keep production running so much to even sell to the Iraqi military. When these were imported in the 80s they were 300USD I could see them being imported as pistols today for around 700USD. The startup costs are already paid for unlike other more exotic guns like the SCAR. There is a market for people wanting to buy guns that aren't AK or ARs.

It's not that they aren't just a gun that isn't an AR, the K1 and K2 have good reputations as dependable guns and one of the few guns from East Asia Americans can own with the ban on Norinco guns and Japan not selling sporter versions of their military small arms such as the Type 84. I doubt these guns wouldn't move seeing how well CZ Brens and other alternative guns can't even stay on shelves.

I'm from the UK, and I noticed something weird when Daewoo was advertising in the 90s. They were trying to become a household name, and because most people weren't familiar with them at the time, they used to have a pronunciation guide in their adverts. I used to buy Guns & Ammo magazine, and I noticed that the pronunciation guide was different in the US than it was in the UK. In the UK, it would say 'Daewoo (day-oo), but in the US, it would say 'Daewoo (day-woo). I always wondered why they wanted Americans to pronounce the 'w', but wanted it to be silent for British people. I'm sure their marketing department had their reasons.

Man, I miss Daewoo. First thing I bought from them was a VCR, didn't last as long as the JVC I replaced it with. Second thing I got that was designed by Daewoo was my 2013 Chevrolet Captiva sportwagon ( fleet sales only ). That was a very useful little crossover. The Captiva started life as the Saturn 'Vue', and was mashed together with the Holden 'Captiva', then updated by Daewoo for GM to use to fill fleet sales contracts for a Vue sized crossover/ small suv.

The 1 to 5 on the rear sight doesn't indicate range adjustment from 100 to 500 meters. Those are just references in the windage drum and it appears to be a copy from the M16/M16A1 as does the 5 notch front sight. The apertures appear to be somewhat copied from the low light sight system used on the M16/M16A1 which would have used a 4 notch front sight post with tritium vial visible on 2 sides.

It was under martial law for a long time after the war "ended". Just the modern history of that country is really interesting. From the Japanese occupation on. I am not even getting into events that happened when Indians were the only inhabitants of the Americas. They even invented a sort of "rocket launcher" that used black powder, bamboo tubes, and evil looking metal tips fired out of a wooden mlrs looking thing.

Arphalia he's already done a FN FNC video a few years ago, its pretty much the same gun with the triggerguard being the only big difference. The only way to get your hands on an AK5 is through the Swedish military, as far as I know they haven't surplused any of them or sold them abroad, he might handle one at a museum tho. Shooting one is pretty much not possible, I suspect Ian is the wrong kind of PR as far as the Swedish armed forced is concerned. I've only fired them because my brother was in the army.
