BACK STORY
May 2020 we started a flower farm in North East Victoria, Australia. Moroni, utilising his Agricultural Engineering skills, and Phaedra drawing on her years of growing vegetables. Neither of us had grown flowers, neither had farmed. We didn't have any large equipment, and we had started up on a very tight budget.

Our climate zone is: In Australia we are right on the edge of Mild Temperate (Zone 6) and Cool Temperate (Zone 7). In the USA this is close to zone 8B. Our lowest temperature in Winter is around -5 degrees Celsius, our top temperature in Summer reaches up to 42 degrees Celsius at least a couple of times each Summer.
This is the story of our farm, our property and our lifestyle. Enjoy!

I love dahlias but most of tubers I bought would not perform well here in Queensland, maybe too hot and humid? However, I tried growing from seeds, and it worked! I have some very beautiful varieties now, saving tubers year after year! The only problem who knows what they are! 😂

But you can wear grannie panties under everything! I’m a sucker for antique-y distressed colours. I’ve also ordered some off colour roses in dusky pinks and browns to go with my dahlias next year. I cannot wait 😍 love the videos 🥰

Apparently the seeds do not produce a direct copy of the parent plant. All seeds are open pollinated and are a mystery until they flower

I started 12 from seed this year (in the states) that I saved from my flowers last year just to see what blooms they will have. I’m hoping they will be a combination of the mother plants an the other blooms the pollinators were at prior to that bloom. Not sure if that’s how it works but that’s what I imagined lol

Haha! Right before you said "Im sure one of you are going to tell me its a horrible moth & i should kill it" I was about to comment & tell you it looks like a cabbage moth... lol! 🤣 im no expert though so dont quote me on that. But i kept seeing similar ones lastb year & i had a horrible issue with the green caterpillars (not tobacco hornworms bit smaller)

I grew unwin mix last year. All I got was yellow, dark magenta an a magenta purple mix kind of Iike the ones she showed I’m the beginning of the video. That was out of 8 seeds. I want the Pom Pom dahlias so bad. The Pom Pom, ball an cactus types are my favorite. I have never seen anyone selling Pom Pom seeds though, I’m so jealous!

The granny panties are my fave colors, altho, I've never really thought of the colors like that before. Last season was my first growing tuber Dahlia's, I bought 8 from a well known grower here in the states, turned out 6 were NOT what I ordered. I grew Avalanche too, loved it, I picked up 4 at one of our big home improvement stores last week, spoiler alert, 3 granny panties. Your arrangements turned out really lovely.

Hi Phaedra really enjoying your videos! Love your sence of humor! I was wondering have you tried leaving your favourite dahlias in the ground over winter instead of digging up to store? I am in South island NZ and I leave all mine in the ground. The ones that have been in for a few years are so prolific now they are my biggest and best plants in summer/autumn We get quite cold and alot of quite hard frosts in winter here to and they still make it through. Also love your bunches at the end with the dahlias, so pretty. can I ask how much you sell those size bouquets for?
@phaedragardeness
@phaedragardeness 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jess! The majority were $35 bouquets, there were a couple of $55ers in there too. Do you cut your dahlias right back to the ground and cover or how do you do it? When I spoke with the Dahlia guy at a botanical garden he told me if you leave them in the ground, over time they end up producing more foliage but less flowers. Have you found that to be the case? I’d love an easier way to manage them!
@jesssmart6379
@jesssmart6379 2 жыл бұрын
@@phaedragardeness cool thankyou! Oh that's interesting! Iv never heard that before it hasn't been the case for me so far my oldest dahlia was about 5 years left in the ground and it got bigger and more flowers every year then I decided to dig it up and split and move it i gave some away to because there was lots. This year I planted around 50 new ones! (I started selling cut flowers to :D mostly in my roadside stall and some at a cafe in town) anyway am leaving them all in and they are currently just left brown with abit of peastraw mulch around them I will go through and cut them back just leaving short maybe 6-8inchish stems then layer some more peastraw mulch on them. The only thing that can go wrong is if they are in to boggy soil and they can rot so that's one thing to consider but I reckon it's worth a try even just to try leaving some of them in and see how it goes!
